I can't stop obsessing over the Inquisitor being called a rival in the newest trailer. That has to mean something.

He wasn't called a Rival, the Elder One doesn't see him as a rival

"I will not suffer even a Unknowing rival"

Meaning he sees you below that but wouldn't at any level accept the existence of a rival.

I thought it was more that, as he wants to be a god, the Inquisitor having people believing in them (especially if fully embracing the 'Herald of Andraste' title) would be a rival in belief

Oh i can definitely see him talking figuratively like that. but how he was speaking it didn't seem like he was calling you a rival but.

"I will not suffer even a unknowing rival to my godshep." that makes a LOT more sense.

Does it mean that?

I interpreted it as him seeing you as an "unknowing rival" whose existence he will not suffer to continue. You are therefore a rival whether you know it or not, and one who will be inconvenient to him if you are allowed to continue.

How i see it is someone attempting to be his rival and him stating i wouldn't even allow a Unknowing rival to exist. I don't see him seeing you as a rival and then saying Grrr you're my rival but i wouldn't even let you live if you were a Unknowing rival.

Huh. I saw it more as him saying the Inquisitor didn't even understand what he was fighting for or against, or the full implications of the whole Fade walk, and as such they were "Unknowing", but because of various traits they were still a potential threat and challenge to the Elder One and his plans and as such they were still a "Rival".

The Inquisitor is special, and the Elder One would be blind not to notice this. You can **** up his plans in a very special way, even if you have no idea what's really going on with anything, or even why your hand is on fadefire. The Inquisitor is very much an "Unknowing" individual. He's got a magic hand and has no idea why. He survived an explosion and has no idea why. He ended up physically in the Fade, and somehow got out without likely ever getting real answers for how any of this happened.

I think the Elder One might have some greater understanding of what happened, and he likely knows that you can close Fade Rifts. Also, it might be before you even know who the Elder One is.

Altogether, this adds up to you already being an unknowing rival that he wants to get rid of.

You are absolutely correct, so don't be discouraged by other BSN members who have turned a bit loopy over the years and to whom words do not mean what they mean to common mortals.

If we do end up meeting The Elder One early on, I hope he kicks the crap out of the Inquisitor and Company. I want up to have to replace all of our armor and weapons after this encounter, accompanied by at least a week of rest.

I get your making a joke, but both interpretations are completely correct until we know context. the only difference is one says you are a rival to a god like figure when you are nothing, and the other says you are nothing and i wont even let you live long enough to be a rival.

Then the theory TheEternalStudent said which i actually quite like. so don't go insulting other BSN theories or interpretations, even if its a joke or not.

You are deliberately misinterpreting words. So no, both are not options, not unless the Bioware writers are equally looney about the meaning of words.

I am not misinterpreting anything.

"I will not suffer even an unknowing rival." So you think he is saying "You are my rival but even if you were an unknowing rival i would still kill you"

While i interpret it "You are attempting to hurt my effort but i will not stand for even an unknowing rival against me."

This is a Civil thread if you are here to bash peoples theories or opinions, then i would like it if you kept that to yourself and actually benefit this thread with your posts instead of just being rude.

What Kieran said. This thread is for theories no matter how outlandish. And once DA:I comes out we can have more concise conversations. Because let's face it. We know Nothing about the Elder One but a few small pieces, so anything is fair game.

Disagreeing is not the same as being rude. Also, this is what you said:

He wasn't called a Rival, the Elder One doesn't see him as a rival

"I will not suffer even a Unknowing rival"
Meaning he sees you below that but wouldn't at any level accept the existence of a rival.

If someone calls you their rival, you are their rival. Not below, not above, just what it says. No interpretation needed.

He never says you are a rival. he says i will not suffer an Unknowing rival. He doesn't say "You are an Unknowing rival." "You are like an Unknowing Rival." Hell for all we know he could be talking in regular conversation with the Inquisitor. "Dude do you know Father Phil? God he beats me at everything and he doesn't even know it! I will not suffer even an unknowing rival."

that isn't the same as stating "You are my Rival."

Also this statement

so don't be discouraged by other BSN members who have turned a bit loopy over the years and to whom words do not mean what they mean to common mortals.

That's not a disagreement that is a joke at other expense I.E rude.

And more to the point you are saying i am knowingly misinterpreting the statement even though he does not say once during the trailer you are a rival. only that small bit which can be perceived different ways until we know context. And i proved creating a sentence which worked perfectly with that statement he made.

I think people are putting too much emphasis on lines without context said probably out of order in a trailer.

Hell, we don't even know if that voice is really the Elder One. For all we know we spend the entire game facing only his minions (agents of chaos) and we actually never see the EO.

I think you guys need to hug it out lol Personally I think they will do a twist games that did major plot twists Legend of Lagaia, Legend of Dragoon and FF6 ect these games had you thinking one way then put a massive spin on it granted you could see early on who the villain is if you looked for the signs I remember phantasy star 4 you thought the big bad guy was this one guy but nope he was just the small guy lol. In some games everything you think on how the boss will be really is not even close I doubt the leaked art is what you think it is most of the time leaked art work is false. Either way if the art work is real I doubt it is as simple as you may think it to be personally they have been doing this for 4 years and a little bit before that they had a decent idea of it around the time of the first game doubt it's simple to figure out. If the story is better then the first one that will be awesome if its worse then the first one then idk. The Most horrible villain in all games was Kefka from ff6 I have played many games but never ran into a villain more horrible then him lol don't think I will ever run into another one.
