Why I don't think Fen'harel is the culprit is as some of you said, he is a rather random fellow, he really  doesn't have an exact goal he just enjoys spreading Chaos. He doesn't seem like the being that would have the patience to plan and plot something like this. The Elder One as we can tell in the Trailers, has a goal of replacing The Maker. Fen'Harel just likes to poke peoples buttons. Not really the sort for world domination.

We have no idea he wants to replace the maker. we just know one quote "Bow to your new god and be spared." it could easily be something to break the spirit of a Inquisitor who is the "Herald of Andraste" you are a religious figure, and he might just want to break that idea in your mind.

 

and Fen'harel does make plans, and he isn't a chaotic god, he is a trickster god, who enjoys toying with people.

He planned the betrayal of the Gods, planned the death of the great beast, manipulated gods to hurt eachother so he could escape. and played on the emotions of a young man in love to kill the Kings daughter.

 

He is the only god we know of that can use peoples emotions, which we think happened to Meredith, Orsino, and Loghain.

when all we have are myths about these beings, it's hard to differentiate the real bits from the folklore.

in inquisition i hope we'll be unveiling some of these myths and bring the truth to light.

I've been trying to keep any spoilers at bay up until today, so if he's already confirmed elsewhere in the story, well. Nevermind then.

Most of us are disappointed because of his bad introductions in Legacy, and wanting something new instead of another darkspawn.

He is tougher then most darkspawn (even on easy he is a tough son of **** to take down) + he is an old magister he knows more about magic then most of Thedas does.

and? we took him down in a bad boss battle. he was present as a standard villain trope.he has no development besides I'm so high and mighty you should bow to me just because i exist. blah blah. we have seen villains like this. he's an old magister and we've probably met one of those already. and we have fought powerful mage's before, what can he do that will really surprise of just because he is a mage?

 

Seriously he is nothing new, he is a high and mighty wizard who toyed with magic he didn't understand and now is evil. Haven't seen anything like that before.

 

I'll play the game, and i'll most likely love the story and love the lore he will be able to present but they could have given us lore and history of things much more interesting than the overused and over spoken about Old Gods and Darkspawn. (I WANT CREEPY ELF S***) in the frostbite engine he does look very threatening. but he isn't anything new and all i have for him is a bad taste in my mouth. yes he is the lesser of few evils, but he is in no way the best choice of a villain they could have made. instead it was a simplistic choice.

 

1-"Y'know what we could do for a villain? what about another mage!"

2-"No. we've done that already."

1-"What about if he is a magister!!!"

2-"we've done that too, we gotta think of something new."

1-"What if he is one of the magisters that went into the black city?!"

2-"Well we have already presented the architect who may or may not be one, and we have already done the whole darkspawn thing, but what ever!"

 

This is obviously over dramatize and incredibly sarcastic. i don't think the developers actually had a discussion like this.if this was a Resident evil game though, i could totally believe this conversation.

 

Edit: I should state though. i am excited to see him, and i do in fact want to see a well developed magister, and i will again love this game and story. but as a choice for a villain i think it was a bad one since when we met him it was such a lack luster interaction, that will be the first impression on many peoples mind.
