The ancient elves also had a habit of sealing powerful spirits and demons:Imshael, Audacity, whatever that Fen'Harel mask tried to summon. And some other sidequests

"Shemlen" translated as quick children.
Children often dabble in things they nothing of so by that logic the humans at some point unleashed him but was too weak until the current timeline. Great theory Mya
Oh happy 30 pages people

I wonder if the Elder One orchestrated the war between Arlathan and Tevinter? Such chaos caused many elven magics to be lost.
The ancient elves also had a habit of sealing powerful spirits and demons:Imshael, Audacity, whatever that Fen'Harel mask tried to summon. And some other sidequests
I think we should only look at recent events. i just highly doubt the elder one is responsible for all the ills in the world. XD i mean give humans some credit. jeez.

I think we can go all he way back to the 1st blight. What Tevintir thought was the Golden City, was the Elder One's Prison. I think that is the farthest we can go back.

So the 1st blight was 1k yrs ago right? So this elder one is possibly the oldest being by mortal standards. So why wait this long to awaken
the first blight happened in 200 ancient so about 1100 years before the fifth blight

I am assuming he is likely a bit more...modern then that.
I have the same feeling, i dont think this plan was centuries in the making, just kinda deciding to do it in the dragon age, instead of like the exalted age or whatever.

oh i remeber this one it was one my favorites. Good on ya vex. Well if go by this it would explain how the taint is alien to fade dwellers and why the venatori would align with it"What if The Maker didn't imprison the Old Gods? What if they are, essentially, the dragon equivalent of dreamers and they learned of the Elder One while traveling the fade? They then hid themselves away and went into a deep slumber to trap him in the Black City, so that he would not do what he's doing now, ripping open the fade and attempting to merge the two worlds. This would endanger not only their worshippers, but the world and them as well. The lore may also have it wrong, and the Old Gods didn't teach the magisters blood magic, the Elder One did. He invited them to the 'Golden City' and gave them the tools to reach it. Once there, they became the first darkspawn. Without knowing why, they sought out the Old Gods and corrupted them, one by one. This is what the EO wanted, as the taint is his own. This is also why demons fear the Black City, merely interscting with it or the EO changes them into even worse monsters, possibly with less free will or intelligence. So the darkspawn start the blights by corrupting Archdemons. The Old Gods never wanted to destroy, but to rule. Destruction is the EO's MO. With each blight, the veil grows thinner and another of his jailers is removed. Now that the fifth archdemon is gone (or in the old god baby) the shackles that bind him are finally weak enough for him to resist and possibly overtake the last two Old Gods (after 9 years and further veil thinning). As for what the Elder One himself is, I'm hoping he's not a dragon, a corrupted magister like Corpheus wouldn't be strong enough in my mind. He may simlpy bethe apex predator of the fade, or whatever world the eluvihans go to, and he's expanding his hunting grounds."

I elaborated further back. I'll go find it but I think it was on 19
How were the old gods keeping him there? The old gods them self were already in prison when the magister visited the black city.

perhaps it was whispered. If that helpsI don't know how to reply specifically, but the old gods being imprisoned before the magisters visited the black city doesn't counter anything in the theory. The old gods imprisoned him there, hiding themselves away, aka 'becoming imprisoned,' and keeping him in the black city in their sleep.
I like vex very imaginative can we keep em

Who wants the Elder One to speak just like the Apocalypse from the X-men Animated series?
I'd love it if the Inquisitor attacks the Elder One and it doesn't affect him at all and he says:
"I am the rock on the eternal shore... crash against me and be broken!"

The 90s obviously that guy was a tyrannical poet!
"I am as far beyond mutants as they are beyond you.!"

Orchestrating the Fall of Arlathan, manipulating magisters which subsequently taints his potential competition (Old Gods) that or maybe the Taint was an unforseen accident like the inquisitor.
If there was a time where there was no veil and ancient dragons ruled, but who ruled those dragons? Justice doesn't know of a maker.
The more I'm in this thread the more I think The Elder one is an ancient and very powerful entity. Perhaps the original Sovereign of Thedas before his eventual imprisonment?

mya my friend your a genius. That brings a new idea to meWhile I am not a big fan of the elder one maniputing things for over 1000 yrs. Its still a possibility. Cliche, but still possible. Whats a few millenia when you're imortal and he may go to sleep every once in a while. I'm sure he has atleast a right hand man(Ahem:Saren was to Sovereign) to do many of the manipulation, promising god hood, etc.Orchestrating the Fall of Arlathan, manipulating magisters which subsequently taints his potential competition (Old Gods) that or maybe the Taint was an unforseen accident like the inquisitor. If there was a time where there was no veil and ancient dragons ruled, but who ruled those dragons?
