...perhaps the use of our fade sealing powers sometimes brings pain?

And the way the the doppleganger speaks, I got the sense too that it was after what we think is a major victory, but that doppleganger is there to tell us that it didn't do a damn thing in the long run.

As for what it is, I'm assuming that it's a manifestation of our powers within our subconscious?

You know, it might not be a Doppelganger at all.

The Inquisitor might be the true Doppelganger, and the original guy who was caught in the explosion was possessed.

pain drives most insane when exposed consitantantly to extreme stressors. So what we could have a malovelent inner persona that either likes to screw with you like most insecurities or the elder one found a gap in your mental armor and is "living" in there just express his godhood

The image of the Inquisitor's blade being catched by the Elder One's hand and then being broken in two is simply amazing. I want us to have to replace all of our armor and weapons after out first encounter. Either that or something akin to Batman's First encounter with Bane.

Sometimes I wonder if maybe the Temple of the Ashes is so Lyrium infused because of her Ashes being there. The Maker was supposed to watch over her after all, and Lyrium is supposed to carry the "Voice of the Maker" in it... I've often considered that maybe Andraste, through her singing, had some unprecedented power over Magic that no one else has been able to emulate.

Yeah he failed at watching over her as we know he let her be burned and the Warden can destroy her ashes so he if he is watching over her he has been doing a pretty terrible job at it.

Yeah it shows in the trailer the Inquisitor feels pain when a fade rift is activated as we show in one of the trailers.

Do you think we will learn his name? or do you think we will always know him as the elder one?

We'll know him as Charles, but he will hate us for it, because his real name is Fluffy. :D

And he will act evil and terrifying, but he lives at home with his Mother.

"Bow before your new god and be--"

"Sweetie! Time for dinner!"

".....I'm trying to enslave Thedas mom!"

"There you go again, Mr. High and mighty! You sound just like your father."

"Your the reason dad left!"

I don't think we will see it this game. and it doesn't really make it fair for the warrior or rogue.

Mages have always had more involvement in the story compared to warriors or rogues though, so this would be business as usual for Dragon Age.

I like to think the Elder One changes with the Inquisitor's class so it is a fair fight. Mage death match. Rogue Death Match and Warrior Death Match.

Yeah he failed at watching over her as we know he let her be burned and the Warden can destroy her ashes so he if he is watching over her he has been doing a pretty terrible job at it.

Watching over is different from actually doing anything.

Whatever the case is, Andraste's Ashes had unusual healing powers, no matter how Lyrium infused they might have been. Lyrium doesn't have healing powers on its own.

All of the manifestations in the Temple were extremely unusual, if nothing else. Even in a Lyrium rich environment you wouldn't normally expect things like that.

I'm not saying that the Maker definitely exists, and certainly not exactly as the Chantry imagines him, but I'm willing to believe that Andraste had a way of getting Lyrium and magic to respond and do things that most Mages couldn't. This ability may have caused the Lyrium around her final resting place to develop and grow in an unusual manner.

Andraste had unusual knowledge of historical events. Knowledge which turned out to be more or less accurate. She supposedly had miracles backing her up, and against a magocracy like Tevinter she must have had some good advantage working in her favor. If she could communicate with Lyrium in some way through her singing...

Well. That would be just the sort of advantage she could use, and it could be just the sort of power that could influence the Lyrium around her remains. Whatever the case, the Lyrium in that mountain was not acting how Lyrium normally acts.

This will probably be a very important plot point, because not every Fade explosion will result in a mysterious sole survivor who met a magic green woman in the Fade and got a magic hand.

As for the Elder One himself, he's already defined himself by one trait. His age. There's also a subtle difference between being Old and Elder. Old Gods are Old Gods because they were worshiped in old times, by the old magisters of Tevinter.

Elder can mean much the same thing, or it could mean that the described entity is older or even derives authority from their greater age.

The feeling I personally get from the title "The Elder One" is not of something that is simply just very old. To me it feels like a something that is perhaps older than the rest of its surviving kind. If he's a Demon, he's probably the oldest Demon there is or a contender for that title. He's a being that may have seen the Golden City whilst it was still Golden, and knew a time before Thedas was separated from the veil.

This being having an army of demons at its command is... Something. Aren't Demons usually territorial?

Now, in interviews its been stated that the Elder One is so arrogant because he feels he's the only one who really knows what's going on, like he has a higher understanding of events than mortals or even Spirits do. So I imagine that's probably related to his age, but there's probably more to it. He's probably aware of events that relate to Andrastian beliefs, but even that wouldn't necessarily explain his attitude in its entirety.

However, even the idea that there was a time before the Veil, when Thedas and the Fade were one is pretty common knowledge, even if some people act surprised by it for some reason. So. What does the Elder One think he knows that he's so damned smug about?

I like to think the Elder One changes with the Inquisitor's class so it is a fair fight. Mage death match. Rogue Death Match and Warrior Death Match.

As I said, you're obviously the Doppelganger and the Elder One will be possessing the original you.

It may be a joke, but that doesn't mean it can't be true.

I certainly agree with many of Duskworns point. The Andrastians say there was a time before the veil and the maker was the one create the veil. But before that Spirits existed.even Justice doesn't aknowledge the maker, nor were spirits ordered to help people.

Yavana also says something similar, but it was the Ancient Great Dragons that ruled and that somehow Thedas owes its existance to dragons.

How Thedas came to be isn't important, but it seems like the Elder One existed at this time. His arrogance makes sense if you think about it.

For example the prothean companion in ME3 was VERY arrogant and condescending towards every species. The Asari made a religion to some prothean scientists. Jellyfishes and frogs were food. Now they are "intelligent" and trying to decipher something that's so simple to his people.

Inaccurate.

According to the Chantry: Spirits are the first children of the Maker.

Well according sandal everyone is gonna be like what they were. Does this mean they'll have magic? Or is it something more similar ala xeongears/xenosaga "true" human form?

Still, I like to think Dragons and/or spirit had thier own territory and that people had more or less symbiotic relationship with them. In exchange for protection and not getting eaten by others, people had to help take care of the dragon and thier offspring like many documented dragon cults.

I don't know why but it seems many dragons are having a difficult time waking up. As if their mind(?) Is stuck in the Fade.
