I used to always get a quest which (IIRC) followed a series of notes or letters from father to son warning of his pursuit of knowledge or treasure or some such thing. The clues lead this guy all over the place and finally ends up in a hovel in the back alleys of Denerim. The warden (with crack squad of armed lunatics) finds this demon/abomination/revenant and kill it. Its game was to get people running all over the place thinking they are finding something of value only to wind up where they started and dead. This dude's quest is not triggering anymore and I don't remember if it is random, mages collective or what?

 

I think his name was Glazkang or something. Can't find him on wiki.

Gaxkang, one of the four Forbidden ones (another's in DA2, and one is in the novel Masked Empire).

 

He's in one of the three alleyways in Denerim - called Dirty Back Alley.  His home is called the Quaint Hovel.  If you visit it early, it's locked.

 

To unlock his hovel, you need to have found all three codexes - one in the ancient temple where you find the ashes, one in the ruins where the werewolves and the Lady are in the Becilian forest, and one in the Tapsters bar in Orzammar.  Once you have all three, click on the hovel, and a dialogue screen will open.  Mention Gaxkang, and the door will open.  All dialogues after that lead to a very tough fight
