My XCOMM forces have just been dispatched to save Edmonton from an alien terror attack. Do you suppose this is an inside joke?

So the aliens used mind control to ruin the ME series?

Also the Rachni are almost certainly inspired by the Formics from Ender's Game.

I don't know what it is about insectiod aliens in science fiction settings, but I find them to be the most fascinating/cool out of all other aliens that have crept up in the genre.

This is at odds with me in real life as I am by no means an entomologist; in fact I tend to freak out when I have to deal with the occasional cockroach. :?

But you show me a race of sentient space cockroaches in a sci fi setting, and I will want to be them.

Hmm? Are you referring to the movie? Cause I cannot remember a name from the book. I never saw the movie.

At any rate, the Rachni mission in ME3 is most definitely a call-out to Aliens, even including the flamethrower.

I always thought that it could be a  reference from the movie Aliens where Ripley says we should take off and nuke the site from orbit https://www.youtube....h?v=aCbfMkh940Q

That's the thing about science fiction movies and games is that there can be striking similarities between character and alien species. Take the tv series Farscape for example there are numerous things that could of influenced Mass Effect such as the blue race the Delvian or the ship that they fly in the Leviathan which resembles the reapers from Mass Effect. Even  Harbingers controlled alien  from ME 2  resembles the Pilot from the TV series when he is racing through the collector base before it blows up. So I would guess that Mass Effect was inspired from many things.

Most likely, Arachnids from Starship Troopers. It's even in their name. Many insectoid species from sci-fi were later based on them, directly or indirectly.

True, though I do applaud settings like the Ender's Game novels or Mass Effect for making the insectoid species something other than mindless monsters for the good guys to kill.

Its always annoying when peoples' first reaction to an alien species in most sic-fi settings is:

  • Ugly/vastly different in appearance than us = 'Kill it with fire!'

  • Beautiful/almost identical to us in appearance = 'We'll bang okay?'

They seem to be inspired from the Formics as well. Some similarities between the Rachni and Formics from the Enderverse:

  • Queens are sapient, workers are not
  • Communicate telepathically
  • Initially perceived as hyper-aggressive, both are actually peaceful
  • Their enemies completely destroy them and cause their extinction
  • Both are revived many years after their 'extinction' after an egg is found
