I still haven't seen any long hair in this game yet.

I'd love a long braid :) that would be epic! We'll have to see though.

I've been wondering about this too. I've noticed there's a lot of long hair in the multiplayer card art but I'm not sure how reflective that is to the in-game models. In the trailer we can see an elven mage, which means it should be either the Keeper or Arcane Warrior. They both have long hair in their card art:

But the elven mage in the trailer clearly has really short hair:

Maybe it's a temp model or something, though. While I'd like to have some longish options I'm okay with the length seen in the Gamescom demo, and as long as there are some nice up-dos I'll be happy.

that looks like solas he has no hair

We've seen the Inquisitor in the Gamescom demo having long(ish) hair...

Is that the Inquisitor or Tommy Wiseau?

Yeah, let's not add long hair because it is impractical and clipping issues and bla bla bla...bullshit. Some of us don't care if it's impractical and it doesn't move or it suffers from clipping....we want the damn option. I want my female Inquisitor to look pretty while killing ****.

Probably most characters have short hair to hide the fact that it does not move at all. As for clipping, a lot of MMOs have long hair and its looks mostly fine.

Sure, it would be nice if new games would spend resources to get the hair to look more realistic like this:

But  still its huge improvement over the DA2.

Tomb Raider even has extra graphic options for the hair. They are alive.

Personally I don't care if they are very long, as long as they don't suck ass. Looking at you DAO. Duncan had great hair. PC males had something that looked like hair. Sup? If they can do acceptable styles, why does the player get the bad designs?

Judging from those I've seen till now I'm not that optimistic.

Poor old Josie she always gets left out.  Scribbles has long hair that is in an updo, as does Morrigan, and I am happy with that.  The illusion of long hair without the cardinal sin of clipping.

We can all just pretend that when the Quizzy comes home after a long day of slaugther she unpins her hair and does the super model flip flip to shake her glorious mane free.

I thought DA2 was an improvement over DA:O when it came to long hairstyles. I'm hoping that they do at least as well as DA2, but the lack of any images so far makes me worried.

I do not get why games can't use physics for hair more often?

I mean when a game like Everquest 2, an mmo from over 15 years ago can do it (not that good, but it still did it) it seems strange that many games still use the same old "playdoh" style blombs on your head, where it's just like SOLID piece of plastic, no movement, no separation or anything.

Tomb Raider showed how good hair could be if given the time to do it properly, and the Witcher seems to be going the same route with proper long hair and physics.

It seems to me that physics would solve a lot of "clipping" issues once everything is set iand the hair knows what is solid/what it can't go through, then the armour sets/helmets are placed on/under it and it goes where it should.

I don't see how they can do robes and trenchcoats but not hair. I don't need individual strands.

Also, on a side note:
Ever tried close combat with long hair?

Yes. People greatly over estimate how difficult it is to fight with longhair.

Or even 'just' whielding a staff as a mage?

I'm going to guess no one here has had that experience, including yourself.

I've taken martial arts, and enjoy twirling and playing around with long staffs and spears.  Had long hair I didn't put up often for most of my life.  It never got in my way and it kinda made me feel more primal.  Also grew up next to the woods, climbed trees, ect, and never really got my hair all caught up.  Sure occasionally it can be annoying and get caught up, but no where near what people make it out to be.  Plenty of warrior cultures commonly had long flowing hair.

Compared to being limited to short hair (or a bun or ponytail), I don't care about clipping or movement. As long as it's there.

Agreed. My characters always have long hair.

I like the Tomb Raider games, but they are only setting up the collisions for one hair style against one body and one unchanging outfit, and even then it is not great, you just have to watch that gif for an example of how hair doesn't behave.

DA:I means setting them up for 4 races with 2 genders each, with say 10 hairstyle choices each, oh and there are 3 classes so that is how many armour types and styles. That is  A LOT more work, massive amounts.  So you can have nice long hair that moves, but the rest of the game is made up of boxes with the word tree written on them in crayon, because there is only a so much graphics budget.

Lets face it guys if u want long hair , u gotta have to wait a couple months after release once modders make some , and I think long hair mods will be one of biggest priorities with prob gender/sexuality romance bias removal.

This

I've got longer hair than the average long haired person (suppressed childhood and all). Never had a problem sparring and doing other activities, though it kind of bothered my wing chun teacher (I suspect he didn't approve of men with long hair^^).

The main problem is that the back of your neck gets too hot due to the work out :P

Lara's hair sacrifices fps and it's for her only. The rest of the characters in the game have playmobil hair.

Yeah, but in real combat, you only need to get your hair caught up once for it to be fatal. (Or make you miss a point in tennis as Caroline Wozniacki found out at the US Open recently!)

That being said, this is a computer game, not reality, so I'm sure our Inquisitors can have magical long hair that never gets caught up in their weapons or armour or shield. It might clip through their armour or weapons or shields though. I'm not expecting Frostbite to be good enough to avoid that problem.

It's still exaggerated and ignores the point of long hair in combat not being unheard of.  Just because it can be a problem doesn't mean everyone needs to cut all their hair off in game or are unrealistic, because frankly, not everyone who fights is completely paranoid about their hair getting in the way.  It's really a silly argument.

I swear people think that every combatant who ever existed wore as much armor as they possibly could no matter what and had military cuts...

Oh well, you can get your cloak and robe caught up with pretty much the same results ^^.

Essentially attacking someone by hair is a form of cheapshot. It wouldn't really work in a fair fight the same way it won't work grabbing someone's clothing (pain isn't a factor, I prefer having pain from someone pulling my hair than a punch to the nose or example ^^). Also I can think of deadlier cheapshots ^^.

The most impractical and penalizing part of having long hair is obscuring your vision (especially if it's windy ^^), but a ponytail (or excessive sweating :P ) solves these problems.
