I think with hair, the more important thing to me than length is texture, I like hair to look like hair.

I love that this discussion keeps happening, and people keep stomping their feet and demanding that they get long hair, even if it looks like ****, apparently. After all, what does BW have to prove at this point?

Spoiler

To make nothing of how important this game is to the company.  After the fuss raised over DA2 and ME3, this is Bioware's chance to regain their good will and it looks like they're bending over backwards to make this a perfect product.

But no game can be perfect.  There will be missteps, controversial decisions, technical restrictions...  This game is as much about playing it safe as it is about pushing boundaries.  If they don't think they can do long hair correctly, then they're damn right not to attempt it, because every review, every bit of fan feedback, every passing aside that mentions 150 hours spent staring at a character with clipping hair says one thing to the population - it says they're sloppy.

Now you and I and everyone else in this thread may be just fine with an inferior execution if it means getting our way, but we're also the people who are enamored enough with the game or the company to be on the forums.  There are far more people out there looking at this as a comeback.  All those people disgruntled with, on the fence about, or scared away by the ****show that surrounded the last two games need to see this as a resurgence.  And if they can keep the quality high by eliminating something they view as problematic or sacrificial to quality, then they should and must do it.  At least this time.

Long hair in the future, maybe.  But for now it's more important that they ensure a future.

It's always been "long hair in the future". I don't know if that will ever change.

I personally couldn't care less, I liked the double bun mod from DA:O (The Witcher import) otherwise I used pretty much all vanilla, even in Mass Effect. I'm a short hair type of person for my PCs.

I just hope a little bit that there's a dirt option, where I can make mah face a little filthy when battling! Something like the Black Emporium would be neat so we could modify our Inquisitor's looks before something major (aka that ball I keep hearing rumours about)

I only hope there are good pixie short hairtyles. I end up only finding them good for my characters. I'm very annoyed Cassandra ave put on a braid and forget her beautiful DA2 short hair. -_-

And I expecially hope the only short hairstyles who let me see my elven girl's ears aren't like Shianni's

Shianni_2.png

it was the right lenght I wanted for my character, but those braids where horrible. and it would have been strange seeing both cousins with the same hairstyle.

DA2 had only two hairstyle I liked:

Cassandra's and this longer with bangs, that I used only for mages (I can't picture my rouges with long hair.)

I do not get why games can't use physics for hair more often?

I mean when a game like Everquest 2, an mmo from over 15 years ago can do it (not that good, but it still did it) it seems strange that many games still use the same old "playdoh" style blombs on your head, where it's just like SOLID piece of plastic, no movement, no separation or anything.

Tomb Raider showed how good hair could be if given the time to do it properly, and the Witcher seems to be going the same route with proper long hair and physics.

It seems to me that physics would solve a lot of "clipping" issues once everything is set iand the hair knows what is solid/what it can't go through, then the armour sets/helmets are placed on/under it and it goes where it should.

I think its because the developers for CryEngine, Frostbite and Unreal use FPS games as the engine flagship and feature showcase and these kinds of games have mostly generic solder dude characters. Long hair only becomes an issue if you have female protagonists and even then most games try to work around this issue with short hair. MMOs are forced to support various hair options as character customization is important part of them.

Different engines can do different things. Lara was the only character in that game to have animated hair. Plus, her image is static. As in, the player can't edit the way she looks, so the devs could focus heavily on her appearance without having to worry about options.

Comparing that to a game where a player can change a character's appearance, plus providing multiple options for said changes, is an entirely different beast. It's like comparing apples and oranges, except the one company only has to grow one orange, and the other has to grow multiple apples.

Plus, the clipping/memory issues provided by long hair aren't 'bullcrap.' Some people may be okay with the clipping and possible lag issues, but there is no way a professional company can ship things like that.

Like I said, MMOs had long hair options for ages and based on the lack of complaints about that clipping is not an issue. As for Tomb Raider, as I understand its the first game to use middleware for hair so of course its not perfect, I am just glad that some developers are finally starting to care about it, so hopefully static single-piece hair starts to die out.

I honestly think that short hair can look really great. At some point, I'm sure I'll have an Inquisitor that looks like this.

If Bio has a problem with long hair (which I find rather unbelievable) they should look for TW2 for longish hair model. Works well there.

Spoiler

I fully expect something like that with each of her 60,000 hairs was separately and fully animated and rendered,at a render farm consisting of 960 workstations that took 1.5 hours to render each frame, with the model estimated to be made up of around 400,000 polygons.

I must not have played those MMOs, where clipping complaints don't exist about anything and everything,

I will never understand the people who think that this issue is not important. Long hair is essential to the identity of my characters, and myself in real life.

While I do think the apparent lack of long hair is an issue... I think attention should first be focused on getting hair styles in general to not look atrocious.

In the grand scheme of things I doubt you'll see a single critic say:

"Well this game was awesome, great gameplay, story, graphics and style. But one cannot forgive the omission of longer hairstyles."

Long hair would be a nice touch but it's way down the list of essential gaming features. Not even close.

Long hair is important but it is not a deal breaker, especially if there will be cosmetic mods which allow the changing of appearances (such as adding longer hair to npcs and PC)

It's 2014. If Bioware can't put in a couple long hairstyles into their game, I will be sorely disappointed. Dragon's Dogma had TONS of hairstyles available and even though the texture looked like crap, at least my female characters had the option.

Dragon's Dogma says otherwise.

Yeah. Lots of choices in DD, and like you seem to be insinuating lots of issues with static styles long or short. With that said there are a couple styles with nice movement to them, my favorite is the bouncy swing of the completely pulled back pony tail, that looks cool as you flip around attacking or just are running around.

Oooh how about a ponytail that isn't a little stubby thing.  Can we have that at least?  The dragon age ponytails have been crazy short and dinky...

How about a ponytail that starts really high/top of the head with it end at the base of the neck... illusion of length, without actual length.

That's called a Topnot actually, is a still cool though.

Might result in a bunch of dwarven rogues running around beardless in topnots named Tasslehoff though...

Given what we've seen so far, I assume the reason they aren't doing long hair is because they can't even get the Frostbite 3 Engine to do short hair that doesn't look like it's made out of sack cloth.  Just look at Cole.

Mainly the fact that long loose hair*like the op wants* had a nasty tendency to sink into the character's body below the neck.

That's what modding is for. I rather they spend their time and resources on level designs.

Not to mention long hair is incredible impractical in combat.
