I feel like we're just going in circles here.  What puzzles me is that there are people arguing against long hair.  It's like saying "I don't want customization".  It's so backwards.

People just don't care about long hair.

I wonder if any are the same argue against the inclusion of spears and polearms.

If said customization clips really badly, doesn't function properly or causes game crashes hell yeah I don't want it.

And what puzzles me are people saying they don't care if long hair clips through their character's body as long as they have it.

It depends... would the pole arm when placed on the back actually ended up shooting out through the face of the character? then yes people would complain.

My concern about long hair is not about realism or choice, it is about the fact they can't seem to do it without clipping, if something is clipping consistently then it is broken and as a developer you shouldn't be putting broken things into the game, it damages your brand and will get badmouthed on gaming sites and among players.

The only option they have is blow the graphics budget on hair that works, or do short to mid length down dos and the illusion of long length with up dos.

With the exception of the third (which... I don't really see why someone would mess up bad enough to make that be the case unless they were more generally incompetent.) just don't use it if you don't want it?

I recall that thread...

It also had people claiming that swords were superior weapons to polearms...

That was a depressing thread.

As with most things, I couldn't care less if they had long hair.

If they have it, great. If they don't, oh well.

It seems like it would be on the list of "We would like it, but can we really spend the resources on it?" for the devs.

Would people be happy if the devs sacrificed an important feature so that some people could be happy with having long hair?

"So you know that tactical camera we were talking about? We had to cut that so that some people could have long hair. Enjoy the new Dragon Age: Inquisition everyone"!

I like long hair. I have long hair. I wish I could play a character with long hair. Male or female, as long as its there.

Shoulder length is good enough to me. (Male and Female, please.) But my problem with the hairstyles in Bioware games is that they look way too weird, I don't mind short, but a bit more variety would be nice, for once.

Oh I wont as I hate horrid clipping but I highly doubt you lot will actually be satisfied when your pc's hair starts sinking into their body or clips through their weapons.

All anyone does is make excuses for why we can't or should not get it.  Of course we'll never get long hair, because everyone and their mother is ready and waiting to defend not having it to the ends of the earth.  We'll never get it because it's more fashionable to tell people "too bad so sad" than actually encourage the devs to try and figure out a solution.  I mean at this point they must feel so satisfied that not having long hair will be defended by the majority, and all their excuses will ultimately be accepted, that really I doubt they gave long hair even a passing look over.  There's no reason for them to try and look into it.  So at this rate we'll never get long hair, because it's perfectly acceptable for them to ignore it.  It won't matter how technology improves, because irregardless they can just completely ignore this thanks to everyone so quick to defend the lack of long hair.

Well thank you everyone for your concerted effort to make sure long hair is an impossibility.  You're all effing amazing.

If there isn't going to be long haired options I'm hoping at least that many of the female characters (player and NPCs) will have hair that looks like it is naturally long, only pinned or tied up. (like Anora, for instance)

Cassandra has a man's haircut and Vivienne's head is completely shaved. I hope they aren't representative of most of the female characters in the game.

From nici2412's post in the TW3 thread...

For me shoulder length hairstyles like the above would be welcomed and I wish this level of detail for all styles.

Funny thing is, the "long" hairstyles that are all super tied up actually annoy me a little.

I look at them and go, "Oh look its 'long hair'. Only its tied up so its actually short in practice".

I really do wish they could figure out how to integrate long hair effectively for once. But as long as weapons are being positioned on the back so people can tell their weapons apart at a glance, I don't think I'll ever get to play a character with actual long hair unless they have technology to prevent clipping.

I'd rather have clipping with the option of long hair, than the nauseatingly short options that I've seen thus far. Everyone's got an opinion, we're not all going to agree on that. But, I'm also happy with an up do that merely suggests long hair too. Also, I play on console so modding really isn't an option for me, or at least not easily done so?

I have very long hair that I romp around in the wilderness for weeks on end with (braided, and certainly not washed in that time period), carrying heavy packs, bucking brush, and rolling around in a sleeping bag for night after night. I've managed just fine with it. Funny thing, when you have long hair, you learn all the tricks for managing it in whatever pursuits you choose. It's never stopped me from performing as good as the next person.

So no, it's not so impractical as people make it out to be.

Why is it that some people think long-hair is impossible to do in a fantasy RPG without major clipping issues? As if it has never been done before?

Geralt's a set character and I'm pretty sure his hair had it's own animation team.  Even Witcher 2 din't have many characters with long hair.

Long hair is fine if you can enforce certain restrictions on the character model. The more customization options you want to offer, the harder it is to do long hair. The Witcher gets away with it because Geralt never wears a helmet, and he only has a single model with the hood up. The ladies also never wear headgear or changed their clothing models - certainly no large topography changes. Tomb Raider got away with it for the same reason - Lara never puts on a hat or changes her outfit either.

It's really a question of priorities. Do you prefer a broader range of customization options, or nice looking long hair? Most of the time the developers will choose the former.
