I'm glad to see Bioware is making the cover of their game unisex.

I guess the Mass Effect Trilogy centered around only Male Shepard as being iconic made females as a backdrop.

Hopefully Mass Effect HD Trilogy when they make it for new gen is a universal cover

Interesting Videos to check out. Very strong points are made here.

does she make valid points occasionally?  yes

but she also rips videos from other LPers (after taking money to play the game), takes material horribly out of context, and has admitted before to not being a gamer

I almost didn't pick up Mass Effect because looking at the cover I thought I'd have to play as a man. It was only after picking up the box and reading it that I realized I could play as a woman.

.

I've always seen things like coverart, trailers, etc.. as merely giving the consumer a taste, "hey this product exists, you should look closer at it".

If you buy a game solely on the ability to play a woman I'd say you are missing out on a lot of really good games and series out there, but to each their own.

I really don't get it. Isn't Hollywood and music industry way worse in how they represent women. Why is everyone running after games? Sure there are Japanese *** games, but other than than most of the industry is pretty much OK.

The problem is that most people are uncomfortable watching things then doing them. Women are more than happy to put on 25 layers of makeup before going out, but damn the developers if there is a low neck top in the game. If women are worried about equal representation, why not work towards it. Why skip college? Why not pursue professional degrees like Engineering, Medical Sciences, Architecture etc.

I knew so many friends who left their college because they got offers for modelling, acting etc. Women are more than willing to work in porn industry but they are not willing to work as factory workers or as technicians.

In my team of 28 engineers there is only one female. Surely, there are way more women eligible for the job, than most of the morons I work with. But it seems there aren't. Among the field technicians that we have, there are only 3 female techs I know of in US / Canada region.

The more men will see women doing there jobs and doing better than them, the sooner they will realize that the other gender has the same potential.

So instead of appealing to game devs to fix the virtual world, please fix the real world. Because the virtual world is just an imitation of the real world.

I guess I've been out of the loop, having not heard of her before. There may have been a point somewhere, but... seriously, saying that the term "FemShep" validates female Shepard as an alternative is affirming the consequent. For a topic with so much low-hanging fruit, it's hardly necessary to make flimsy arguments. It seems as though she's harder to ruffle feathers rather than to produce an intelligent critique.

I had this issue, too.  My favorite Dragon Age cover is still the Blood Dragon. :(

It's hard to keep an open consumer mind like that when you keep getting your hopes up and discovering yet another highly regarded game is once again male protagonist only.

In shooters I can cope with being a male protagonist (although the option to be female would be nice), but RPGs are a different matter. I put too much of myself into the characters.

And I think it is a very nice cover indeed. I like the composition of it, the colors, the font... I think it stands out, in a good way. And making it unisex is a nice, effective touch. When you can't tell the character's gender and so on it's easier to put yourself in their position, and as I saw someone write above, that's vital for RPG games. It's harder for everyone to do that when it's ActionDude (or ActionDudette, for that matter) staring at you from the cover.

The Inquisitor on the cover still looks like a guy to me - though I don't really have a problem with that. I'd be interested in knowing what someone who didn't know anything about the game thought of it.

The ME3 cover had both genders, one on either side...

The DA:I cover is completely ambigious.
