In combat, Fenris is doing this annoying thing where he'll autoattack an enemy, walk away a short distance, pause a second (sometimes using bolster or second wind), then run back to the enemy, hit him, and repeat.

I can't figure out why he's doing this. I've tried turning off both bolster and second wind in his tactics, since he uses those when he steps away, but those haven't done anything. I thought it might be some quirk in his AI involving him trying to get distance to use scythe, so I turned scythe off, but that didn't work. I've tried turning off his AOEs (whirlwind and spirit pulse), but still nothing.

this is really bugging me. He was working just fine in act I, it was only in act II that he started acting all wierd. I'm playing a mage with the elemental tree, and I love shattering all those brittle guys with him, but I can't use him if he's going to be all wonky like this (at least I still have varric).

Is this being caused by a specific tactic of his, or is it something else? I'm out of ideas.

The only thing I can think of is change his combat behavior. I think aggressive is his default. Maybe check what it says (not something strange like ranged maybe) and try changing it to something else.

Ah, that was in fact the problem! he had somehow gotten set to ranged... which is rather odd that that's even an option.

Now I have good old Fenris back! Thanks!

Heh, so it was actually on ranged after all. No wonder poor Fenris was so confused. :P  Glad the issue is solved then.

Just an observation - I have no data to back it up.  It seems like some companions' fighting styles are more prone to weirdness than others'.  I've got problems with Carver and Varric in particular, acting against the tactics I've programmed in.  Why does Carver always charge into combat despite setting his behavior on cautious or defensive?  Why does Varric keep trying to use Bianca as a club despite being programmed as ranged?  I don't use Fenris as much as I used to since I play on nightmare and he takes down my DW rogues in about a second flat with that scythe of his, but I do like to bring Carver along on Legacy DLC.  Any suggestions?
