I go to a website and type in what I want the name to mean. (Like for a rogue I might want a name that means bird or hunter) and from there go down the usually long list until I find one I like.

I have a whole pile of names I tend to use in RPGs - mostly fantasy based, but some more modern for games where that fits. I tend to play around with the character creator / background and then once I'm happy, pick the name which I feel best fits.
As for how I came up with those names. Some are made up based on traditional fantasy naming tropes, some are historical (in no small part looted from CK2's name lists....), some are foreign and for the modern ones, they're just names I like.

I don't have any real set guidelines. The names tend to sound feminine or masculine based upon the gender of the character... ie soft or hard sounding sounds. I guess I have several 'partial' name syllables in my head and I just tend to mix and match them to create a name.
Example:
female prefixes : Vel-, Shy-, Ar-,
female suffixes : -anya, -arra, -aiya
So I end up with Velanya, or Arriya, or some other random combination from my usual list.
Male characters tend to have harsher sounds to their syllables like : Torim, TyKaid...

I too can obsess over picking a name. It can be hard choosing a name that has perfect meaning, unique, & easy to pronounce. If all else fails, I go with a Hebrew name.

Damn that sounds nice. I always struggle with names. Can you share the site you use?

In Skyrim, I usually played Bretons and used names from the real Breton people in Northwestern France. Things like Guyomarc'h, Judicael, Arthur, Adela, Elena, Nolwenn etc.
My first playthrough will be a Trevelyan Male; Trevelyan is a Cornish surname, and the Cornish are cousins to the Bretons. Given that there aren't that many Cornish names in regular usage, I'll go through my list of French/Breton names to find something. It's currently a toss-up between Judicael, Yann, Anton and Felix.

My name will be "Inquisitor", so I get the feeling that everyone is calling me by my name and not by my title

Normally with Bioware games I go with my name. For example in Mass Effect 1 I went with Norman Shepard and my main character in DA:O is Norman Cousland. For Hawke I just went with a name I generally use for a lot of my RPGs which is Durhon. It doesn't really fit in lore wise, but oh well.

I try to stick with names that at least sound lore-friendly, whether they actually are or not. I have done extensive research for some character names though, looking for a name that not only sounds cool, but means something interesting and related to the personality of the character.

Depends. With my Warden, I wanted to play a mage immediately after watching that opening sequence where Duncan talked about the Tevinter mages. Sounded very Paradise Lost-esque, and started toying around with names that would go along with that theme. Settled on Samael, but felt like it'd be too on-the-nose, so I changed it to Samuel.
With my Hawke - he was pretty much default - as I based him 100% off of the "Destiny" trailer. So I kept the name "Garret".
My Inquisitor I plan on naming Ariel (was going to be Helena, but Ariel sounds more like an elven name). I started listening to the metal band Kamelot around the time I started playing Origins, and associate a couple of songs off of their Black Halo album with my Warden and Hawke. Figured I'd continue the tradition - and seeing as the album has recurring instances of the names Ariel and Helena, decided to pick one of those to name my Inquisitor. ![]()

If I don't come up with something that is unique and has no meaning, I fall back on naming my characters after some other hero or villain, like Uriel, Auriel, Artorias, Darkseid, Jackson (King) Shepard, or Ba'al Zebul. Then there are the characters who go by a nickname instead, such as Blade Cousland and Miser Hawke. These names tend to exemplify my character's role and helps me focus while roleplaying. Otherwise, my naming method is kind of random. Whatever seems right for the character is what I go with, I guess, but I never pick a normal name like Howard or Tim.

Farci "Reprimer" Cousland
Laudwine Hawke
Reginald (nickname Regal ) Trevelyan
My 3 canon Dragon Age heroes.
As I recall Farci is just something I picked up from French dictionary when I named my Sims 2 character long ago. Later I used that name for my Cousland and I like to think that my old geezer vampire sim had a REALLY interesting past that no one simply doesnt know
Laudwine is a character in one of the stories of Robin Hobb if I remember correctly. I thought that name had a nice ring to it with surname Hawke when I was creating my Champion of Kirkwall so it stuck.
Now I plan to name my inquisitor Reginald because I discovered it means powerful or ruler in the old languages so I think it is kinda perfect.
Naming is always fun for me and I always try to give some interesting and unique names for my characters.

for my male Dalish Warrior Warden i gave him the default name, Theron, for my hawke i used my "online" name of Karino, and i'm probably going to use Karino again for my Inquisitor, unless i can think of something particularly good or the default name is good.
