Sometimes I catch names or parts of names or just random words in other languages that sound nice to me.

I make lists with those "names" and save them for games (or stories I write), and when I need one, I take a look at my list and decide which one goes well with the personality of my character (Sometimes I change it a little, add another letter or something, nothing major).

I always google them to make sure that there is no negative meaning to the word/name, and strangely enough most of the time the meaning even works well with my chara. :)

Usually I pick the name of characters I like from other things, since the name already means something to me.

Sometimes I just use names I like the sound of, and pluck them from anywhere (like overhearing it or seeing it in a newspaper).

I do everything I can to ignore the Pre-Set last name as it's the only feature I absolutely hate (and admittedly - it is a small one)

I search about them a lot. Usually I use different name pages where you can search names that different countries have and what meaning different names have.

In Inquisitor my four planned characters have all name that means something:

Skye Adaar: Named after her skye-blue eyes.

Valpur Adaar: "Valpuri" is finnish version of Walburga who was catholic saint. Name means ruler of fortress. I dropped i in the end and I think name fits to qunari :)

Tamarin Lavellan: Named after zodiac "Emperor Tamarin" which is combination of chinese zodiac's "monkey" and sign "cancer". His personality is going to be close to his zodiacs.

Michal Trevelyan: Michal is version of Michael, who is one of archangels.

I've been doing this long enough that I just draw from the same pool of names with each game.

Naming a Qunari Inquisitor is kinda tough. They're Vashoth, so there isn't really any cultural influenced pool of names to choose from. You kind of just...go with something. Could just slap some Qunlat word on her, but I kind of want her to be someone who distances herself from the Qun as much as possible.

Still not really decided. :S

Since I'm kind of unimaginative when it comes to names, I usually just take names from whatever book I'm reading at the time (If it's not a actual Dragon age book. It would be awkward if two Lelianas were running around.).

Thin air has yet to run out of names for me to pull out of it.

I have a lot of characters who are in a story I'm working on. Many of them transition well from my story to whatever game I'm playing. Some of my characters are even born from the games I play. There's usually one though that is made for the game and never leaves it.

Skyrim had Ulric; Mass Effect has Jaeser; Dragon Age 2 had Cormac Hawke; and DA:I has Kata Adaar. Those characters will never leave the game world. They were "born" there and they will stay there.

That being said I have 9 Origin/Awakening play throughs chosen, 9 DA2 games, and have already chosen 9 Inquisitors. The only way the number will change is if my hunch on the last LI is wrong. >.>

Every character I create is usually very personal. Sometimes though I make one who hasn't been fully "made" in my story yet and use the game to help them possibly grow.

They all have more then the standard background and personality given to them in games though. Either way it's a unique story/experience every time. :)

I tend to use names from old European languages--old Norse, old English, Gaelic, etc. My first (elven mage) warden's name was Iona (I had never played before so had no idea that Iona was in fact already the name of an elf in the game) from Old Norse, and my Hawke's name was Callum, which has Scottish roots (as do many Fereldan names; Alistair, Duncan, and Malcolm for example). Funny enough, I found out later that Callum and Malcolm (and even Iona, weirdly) are names related through Saint Columba, so that's a funny coincidence.

So anyway, yeah, older names. If the character is both human and Fereldan, older English and Scottish names work well since they're already peppered through the world. I think with elves the trick is just to find an older name without hard consonants--or to make something up from scratch.

Even though names don't matter in these games . Often you are just the Warden (or my Lady) , or just hawke or Inquistor . I still scratch my head , if only to be able to remember my save games . I wish we had an easy system of saved game in Mass effect

My witches are usually salem

Same! Good Mage : Salem , rebel Mage : Fade  B)

In MMO's I research like mad, it can take ages to get it right..

Strangely in DA and ME I always use the default or a variation of it in DA2/ME. So my female Hawkes where Marian, Mary, Meri etc. ME was Jane, Janus and so on.

DA:I will be back to default as it is unlikely I will play the same origin/race more than once.

I use prosopographical databases, which are academic records of every single human being named in epigraphical, archaeological, or textual sources for a given time period. Kind of like "Who's Who", but without the intentional classism. My favorite is The Prosopography of the Later Roman Empire (PLRE) (3 vols.).

I did that too for the 1st time , for Swtor online . I wanted something Sith like for my Sith warrior . After a quick research on the Wookie , I was able to mix 2 old siths words and come up with a name : Nu'Dzwole . Which mean 'I ' and 'Exist' . But you know how MMO are right ?  That just earned me a new nickname 'Nude' !

I try to make my names a reference to another character, while having the name appropriate to the setting and lore, and look/sound good, and match the way the character looks or acts.

It's hard, but fun, and you can get some amusing results. Such as my dwarf noble, Euron Aeducen, returning to his homeland after his exile to commit fratricide and kill any and all who opposed him marshaling his new army and getting his petty revenge.

Or San Mahariel, my dalish elf, fighting for nature against mankind and its cities, with a great wolf at her side and dagger in hand.

When it comes to MMOs or the like, it's really best to come up with something simple and memorable - unless you want a nickname assigned to you.  XD

Trust me.  One of my REEALLY old characters back when I used to play Runescape with my friends was named "Laxington".  Everyone ended up calling him "Ex-lax".   XD

Yeah , Although for some reasons I end up swarmed with tons of nicknames . Some of them were to mock , but some were given by my guild just to tease me . The biggest shock , is the peoples who make up weird names and yet get no nicknames but instead it is seen as 'Cool' and 'awesome' . I mean some guy running around with  a name like 'ButtFace' and yet I made a Jedi Consular named 'Serenitie' and I end up called 'Brocolie' cose she was a merilian XD

Hahahaha!  Well, I suppose that's one way to go about it.  XD

This conversation actually reminds me of Spoony's whole discussion regarding character names in RPGs.  :P

Oh I take my naming very seriously.

First I check the names of NPCs to get a little insight as to the cultural origin most of them have.  Then I do a little research, find names with a similar origin, and choose one that I like.  This will be based on how it sounds alongside the names of the character's family members, how it sounds with the last name, and I usually like for it to be a name no other NPC has. Similar names may be acceptable (my Warden was Darren while in his origin there was an NPC named Dairren) but the same name is usually a no-go unless there are special circumstances. And last, I have to decide if the name suits the image of my character.

Meaning isn't typically a priority.  I usually don't care much since there are often multiple interpretations and those likely do not apply in Thedas anyway.

Compared to most I have a probably have a lot of stipulations, but figuring out a character's name is a fun process for me and I love when I narrow it down and find the perfect one.
