In general, I like for my names to have some significance, be it an appropriate meaning or a reference to something that I associate with the character I intend to play; just makes them easier to differentiate in my mind. I do probably stress less over names for SP games, since I'm the only one who will ever have to know it. My husband has been known to name his characters stupid stuff like "Stinkballs" or the like... I just can't bring myself to care that little.

Edit: oh good. Stinkballs goes to the top of the new page. Stellar.

My first character is always named Sylvius the Mad. Games that don't allow me to name him Sylvius the Mad are games of which I have a negative first impression.

The reason I don't use Facebook (and never have) is because it wouldn't let me use the name Sylvius the Mad.

Tend to go with Irish names as they work for most races and you see a fair amount of Celtic/Gaelic names in the setting. My main Warden, a human noble, was named after myself (Eamonn) despite not being like me personality wise.

Having a character like Arl Eamon sharing your characters name made for nice bit of immersion, albeit completely accidental. In that regard I'd suggest looking at some NPC's in Origins, Awakening and DAII for inspiration if your struggling for ideas.

All else fails just name them after a "A Song Of Ice & Fire" character.

My males are usually called Pepe. I'll probably make a qunari called Pepe el Cornudo at some point.

In terms of females it depends on the voice acting and the CC. If I can recreate my Evandra, then that's it. If not, she's called Ra'o.

Well, I'm a bit of an opera fan, especially baroque opera and that's an excellent source of unusual but authentic names, so most of mine tend to come from that but it also depends on the character and race. Because Hawke was human by default, most of mine had fairly ordinary names (Diana, Nicholas, Daniel, Iris...even Susan) and my human Wardens were similarly named. I got to have a bit of fun with the elven and dwarf Wardens though. I never re-use names in the same franchise though so I'm looking forward to lots of original names for my Inquisitors!

BTW, I know what the previous poster meant about checking out NPC names first! My first playthrough of Skyrim, I named by Nord Sigurd only to find another Sigurd in the second town I came to!

I have a book of names that I use for naming characters in the stories I write, so I used that. I also looked up the meanings of the surnames for each race and based my name criteria on the surname's place of origin. Except for Cadash as that's dwarven. For Lavellan I used Celtic and Welsh names, for Trevelyan I used English and Scottish names, Adaar was Arabic names, and for Cadash I decided on Scandinavian and Germanic names. Came up with names for four playthroughs, one per race.

Faylienne Lavellan (which is just a French spelling of a Celtic name), Rafferty Trevelyan, Bashira Adaar and Armyn Cadash.

Humans are named from roots coming from that places equivalent, or nearby. For instance Fereldens get names with English roots, Orlesians (like the Orlesian Warden-Commander) come from French roots.
Dwarves use Norse roots, and elves are cobbled from the bits of elvish we know, and tweaked so they don't have a name that's just some words.
I don't know about Vashoth, but they'll proably be named based on character, with them having chosen attributes they like or words that sound nice.

I'll usually just make up a name that sounds vaguely lore-friendly. For TES-games I check the UESP for names and cobble something together.

I generally name them on the spot. Based on the letters of whatever is nearest to me "There's a window near me...Window..W..her name is wanda"

My naming conventions are all over the place: sometimes I'll put a bunch of research into browsing various naming sites for meanings. Sometimes I'll settle with something like I want the name to start with "Re" and end in an "a" and try searching for ones that fit and sound right. I'll also rip names from books/movies/shows that I like -- currently partial to the idea of "Khal" (from Game of Thrones) for a male Qunari or "Vittani" (Lion King 2) for a female.

And sometimes I will honestly take my name for a character from something literally just lying there in my view. I now have a Pathfinder character named 'Dasani' because it just sounded exotic enough and the water bottle was right there.

Default.

John Shepard (ME)
Garrett Hawke (DA2)
Prisoner (Skyrim)

This. It doesn't mater what I write. People call my character how they want.

In ME, I really don't put much thought in the names because there really is no point.

But for Dragon age there is some thought behind it, I find that making a name that goes with Hawke is much harder than naming my Warden(s). My Warden Dalish elf's name is Daya, and my Hawke that I will be choosing for the Keep is Gizel, although I wish I could change it. (Figured she wouldn't get past Kirkwall first year)

My DA:I name has been researched, I have chosen Elvira or Elvire. (EL-VEER-rah) Trevelyan female Mage. It means "The protected one"

Always keep it lore friendly/appropriate. I consider the race, country, and social status. Then I give them a name I feel is appropriate.

For example; my Human Male Mage Inquisitor's name will be Christoph.

My Male Qunari Warrior's name is Saar.

Male Elf Mage's name is Ignatius.

Male Dwarf Warrior's name is Troy.

Female Dwarf Rogue's name is Magaret (Maggie)

It just not a name !! Its SPELL to any hero wannabe in the game who wanna steal my heroic moment to back off !! Charname is the main Hero and none else ! So beware !  Or if you end up being lectured , you just point it 'See I'm charname! I can do no wrong!!! It is all set up for me to shine!'  B)

That cinches it; one of my inquisitors will be named Charname.

Personally, I go on a mad adventure to find a name that suits the culture of the race I pick and the personality/class of my character. I'm going with a mage Qunari for DAI so I've been looking up Qunlatn to help pick my male Quizzies name. I got Meraad Adaar so far :P (Meraad meaning tide and Adaar meaning flame thrower).

I find It's easier with a human, you can pick nearly any name you like. I tend to pick names for my humans that reflects their wealth when they start off (if they're a commoner or noble). But unless I'm forced to pick a human *cough* DA2 *cough* or the human origin simply is more involved in the main plot *cough* DAO and Arl Howe *cough* then I'll play as other races :)

I'm pretty obsessive about my characters having the right names that I'm happy with.  I can't play a character unless I can really really get behind the name I've given them, so I tend to research a lot.  In general, I tend to base my character's names around their culture of origin (or fantastical equivalent), and whether one name or another has a meaning that fits my character's personality or traits.  Sometimes, however, I never really find anything that clicks (I'm looking at you, Qunlat), so I have to think a little bit outside of the box:

What other culture are they a part of?  Is there a reason why their parents would choose another name?

Can I construct a "fake" name that sounds like it could be from that culture?  Could I modify a pre-existing one?
