So the Dalish Inquisitor MUST have vallaslin, but...

Stop being jerks...
Just choose the one you like more, and decide yourself what it represents. Roleplay that part too!
Maybe you should take the time to read up on the lore before you insult people for wanting to know what each of them means... these are not simple tattoos, they are a part of Dalish culture. A mandatory part. That's not our decision, it's the decision of the developers. If they want our characters to represent a specific culture, they should explain that culture so that we have a better idea of what we're doing.
At least the fan interpretations put some thought into the problem. Your solution of "just make something up," isn't useful in any way.

I guess they might be avoiding tying specific tattoos to specific gods so as to not make players feel obliged to take specific ones? Though I'd rather have the info

I have a different problem with this whole thing. Supposedly, if the inquisitor is an elf, he or she was sent by the keeper to spy on the conclave. How are you supposed to remain inconspicuous when you have a full face tattoo that says "hello, I'm Dalish".

Not a big fan of this decision by Bioware.
Like it or not, tattoo's draw strong opinions both for and against. I have my own opinions but will not share them at this time. What I will say is tattoos were able to be disabled for Elves in DA:O so some us will have had Dalish PCs with no tattoos and if our Wardens could be that why can our Inquisitors not be?

I liked that in DAO whether playing Dalish or Castless dwarf you could not have tattoos and it would ask if you were sure, and mention it may take away from the full experience, but ultimately left it up to you. I do not like that they've decided to force it this time.

I forgot about the Casteless Dwarves, thanks for the reminder

I got the feeling it was spying by sneaking around and listening in on conversations rather than hiding in plain sight spying, and honestly the humans might just think your elf is a Dalish that moved into an alienage and works as a servant (like Arianni who had Dalish tattoos but lived in the city.).

I really wish we'd know what the tats mean. I'll probably just pick the ones I think are prettiest but still.

eh... I just pick design I like best... it would be interesting to know which tattoo is for which god, but im not complaining if they don't say. As for forcing the tattoo... I always found it silly that you could be dalish(or casteless dwarf) without one. The tattoos are as much a part of them as their pointy ears. So wanting to be a dalish with no tattoo is like wanting to be a dalish human/dwarf or a dwarven mage.

It's about liking how your character looks not about whether it fits in with the history. People who don't like tattoos will find their character unappealing if they have them and therefore shuts off that option. Who wants a PC they cannot stand the sight of.

By that logic you should be able to make your elf look like a qunari.

Icefalcon - why not both?
Since the vallaslin are such a big thing in the Dalish culture it is sort of mandatory that your dalish has them.
It's a sign, not only of you coming of age but that you are ready to take on the responsibilities of an adult life.
A Dalish without a tattoo is basically legally incompetent.
And isn't that one of the big points of roleplaying? Pretending to be someone else for a while.
Me for example would never get a facial tattoo. And since I have health issues you'll never see me camp in a forest.
But as a dalish elf I can pretend a little and then I want the full experience.
And I would want the tattoo to match my dalish characters personality. Perhaps a cold tactician who never compromices shouldn't have a tatto that symbolizes the Halla Mother?
I do have to say that I wish some of the tattoos weren't as big and obvious as they were in DA:O More delicate linework and and patterns would be great.
The only ones I liked in DA:O was the "Ghilan'nain" and the "June" (from the link used earlier in the thread: http://sugarkanegame...down-and-worked) - and only the smaller versions, not the full face ones.
But I'd rather have a character with a tatto that means something that I have chosen because it matches her/his personality than just one that is pretty.
Because I know the Dalish doesn't get tattoos to look pretty.

I'd much rather not know, to be honest.
I wouldn't want the one or two I actually like the look of to end up represnting something that doesn't fit my character at all.

When I looked at the thread title I first thought it said 'so the Dalish Inquisitor MUST have vaseline!' and I thought.....oh my.....those kinky elves.
Bah, I made that joke on the previous page ![]()

My Dalish Warden had Vallaslin, I just picked one that wasn't too intricate. Faded is out a little bit, I always headcanoned that the older the Elf is, the more the Vallaslin is faded out. Just like real tattoo's. Which was really helpful in creating my Elves. I do wish we could find out which Vallaslin markings meant what, maybe a little text box explaining it would be enough.
If Solas is Dalish, why is it that he doesn't have the markings? Or am I completely oblivious as to the reason why? This may have already been discussed somewhere.

He's a city elf.
That never occurred to me. Hm, Just figured that if he had a preference for Dalish Elves, he would be Dalish as well. It was a dumb question, but thanks for answering.

I understand wanting to know what Vallaslin mean but I don't get being upset that you have to have one.
Without a Vallaslin, your Dalish Elf is not considered an adult and therefore wouldn't have been given a mission of this importance. The Dalish Warden only got away with it because you could headcannon that they got tainted by the mirror when they were too young to go through the ritual.

I don't understand why you'd have to have face-tattoos, it should be like the Qunari with the horns, optional. Certainly those that want one can have one, it wouldn't effect them, but those that don't shouldn't be forced to have one, as they really get in the way of making your elf look the way you want. I hope when they say they can be faint, they mean HIGHLY faint

He's a city elf.
Actually, technically; he is neither.
He grew up in a small village but soon left to live alone and travel the land.
He has had some contact with Dalish clans during his travels but he never belonged to one.

heh, never knew that dalish tattoo's had a meaning. I just choose the one I liked the most.... Oh well, guess this time I have to pick one that suits my inquis instead of looking stylish? ._.
