A dev showed a picture of his elven Inquisitor  , it's on the Twitter thread.

Anyway he had vallaslin , but you can't tell it's the case because the tatoo is almost invisible .

In theory he has a tattoo near one of his ears...

Don't know if it is just because different screens, but I clearly see the lines.

I'm not sure "clearly" is the word , you can guess there's some very faint greenish lines.

I didn't see anything until the dev wrote where it was supposed to be .

Anyway , if it looks like this in game:

1 Vallaslin can be nearly invisible , for people who don't want them .

2 I'm not sure those two lines are representing any Dalish Gods.Looks like a random tatoo , a bit like Zevran had on his face.

No, I mean clearly. Like I said, maybe my screen just picks it up more but I can clearly run my finger over exactly where the lines are.

If this is their "invisible" option, then I am out of luck. :(

Huh not bad. Least we're not forced to have a visible ugly tat on our face.

Begs the question though if people in Thedas have super eyesight to be able to recognize him as dalish on sight though :P

I see some very faint lines on the right side of the picture (left side of his head) in his hair... is that what we're talking about?  They look like lines cut into his hair by a razor... like it's part of his haircut.  If there's anything other than that, I can't see it...

Anyway, between this and the female elf's green lines over her eyes, I think we can all stop looking for meaning in the vallaslin.  At this point it appears that there is none.  At least none that I can figure out...

I agree, Vallaslin seems pretty meaningless. Sure one elf in the codex had his as the symbol of a god but it doesn't seem like a rule, more like something someone pretty devoted would pick out for themselves.

Uh... you mean the new ones, right?  Because the ones in DA:O seem legit.

Wow, really? Maybe you should adjust your screen settings?

I can't see anything at all. But if it's a green tatto you can probably go with gold or brown or yellow and have it fade in even better.

Why should I adjust my settings? Apparently my screen is a lot better than I thought it was if it can pick up stuff clearly while other people can't.

It's lines that are quite similar to Zevran's tattoo, both in placement and design. I'm guessing some people may overlook them thinking it's just shading of his facial features.

I thought it was shadows and facial contouring but after staring at it long enough I saw a Zevran-esque thing by his eyebrow.

have you ever considered that what you see is not correct? like maybe you are seeing something "clearly" because it validates your concerns...

Considering that the person who made the character pointed out where they were after I saw them and they are in the exact same place, no.

Are you talking about the two lines on the right side of the picture (his left) next to the midpoint of his ear?  Diagonal to the cheekbone?

I'm not saying they're not there, I'm just saying it blends well enough that many of us can't see it at all.

Eer, seriously.... In DA:O there was actually a codex which quite clearly states that Vallaslin tattoos do represent elven deities, and that particular elf's philosophy about life. By choosing which deity you dedicate yourself on, you pretty much define your view and approach to life. In DA:I, now that we know we will definitely have blood writing, it just makes sense to know the meaning of the tattoo and which deity it represents. Seriously, it's very obvious, and if we don't know it will take away from our experience. If nobody, not even another Dalish, even makes a comment on the meaning of the tattoo, it will be very disappointing.

I really don't understand the mindset behind preventing players from understanding which vallaslin correlate to which one of the Creators, particularly for an RPG (a genre where some fans like to immerse themselves in the world that's been established as part of roleplaying a character). I'm hoping the original vallaslin designs are still available for players, since I'm not a fan of the new vallaslin designs.

Some fans have actually gone the extra mile to do their best to identify which one of the original vallaslin designs corresponded to which one of the elven gods. Tevinter Rose pointed out to me this particular fan's effort (from Balicakes for Breakfast):

I'm still upset that elves must have tattoos, but if it looks like that male elf screenshot, it might not be so bad.

My dwarf commoner had the smallest, least noticeable brand on his face, and I tried to make it as invisible as possible, but you could still see it and it looked pretty bad. I was not happy about it. DA:I looks like it might be a little bit better about this. So far, it looks like if I bought the game, my inquisitors would be...

1. Dwarf Warrior (two-handed)
2. Elf Warrior (sword-and-shield, Andrastian)
3. Human Mage

Not a final decision at this point... I wish I could play around in the character creator.

A nice compromise would be to explain the Pantheon related tattoos and leave the more open/general tatoos without explanation.

I like the idea of Dalish lore not being complete. It makes sense for tattoos to be reevaluated, even if it might be 'heretical', as cultures and people evolve.

For those reasons, Traditional and Non-traditional tattoos would be a good compromise.

The main reason the Dalish exist, however, is to preserve their race's ancient lore and customs... For centuries, the Dalish culture has been fairly static and inflexible by design.  I don't think most clans would be receptive to any non-traditional ideas, even small changes to the practice of vallaslin and the religious symbolism within the tattoos.  I could see different clans having unique tattoos that represent the Creators, since they are spread out all across Thedas, but broadening the meaning behind the tattoos to allow for secular or artistic designs seems like too big of a change to ever be acceptable.  If the tattoo isn't even a representation of a Creator, then I don't see any justification for it to be a mandatory practice anymore...

I could be wrong though.  Supposedly the Dalish clans can vary in culture, although I haven't personally seen much of that... It's possible that Lavellan's clan is unusually progressive in certain ways...  that would explain why these new tattoos are drastically different from what we saw in Ferelden and are so abstract that no meaning can be easily drawn from them.  But again, if they don't represent the gods, I see no reason why they should be part of a coming of age ritual... If it's just art, then forcing members of the clan to get them seems pointless.
