Were you living under the rock for few months now? ![]()
Developers have already said that there will be some characters returning (only Varric as a companion, though). And no. I am an old BW and DA fan and I would not like this, because one of the best things about DA and ME are the new characters, making the world and experience grow.

I think Biowear would much rather write for the New then the old we don't need to romance Morrigan or any old characters again so you should move on from the old and look in to the new.

This is pointless, the only time an old character should return is if they have a purpose in the main story or their character arc is incomplete. Why waste slots on companions we've already had ? They wouldn't have anything new to say really, their characters, minus a couple, have gone about as far as they can go.

This would not go well. If they brought back everyone it would take too much of the world budget away from new characters and not even give enough to the returning cast; everything would end up being half-assed that could actually leave a lot of people unhappy. Think of doing a movie adaptation on a fighting game, everyone wants their character in there so most get reduced to just throwaway roles or cameos at best; this is would be bad thing for Dragon Age. Also consider this, although the player may have a connection to past characters the inquisitor would not; why would he care about recruiting Oghren or Sigrun into their personal party if all they can offer is being Grey Wardens; a role already provided by Blackwall who supplements it with knowledge of Orlais.
At best they should be the option to become agents of the Inquisition, not companions; similar to how Zaeed and Kasumi where treated in ME3.

Lone, I found your post well thought out and the ME 3 example is good. By all means I didn't want to take away from the development of new characters, all I was thinking is offering the ability to recruit if you want and if you didn't then you could have all new characters. Maybe when I see how the Keep works past decisions and actions may actually matter but right now these games aren't really tied together. What did it matter if I went through the mirror with Or not...what it matter if I went through the dark ritual...these had really no affect on DA 2. I know who we chose to become king allowed for a visit from them to Kirkwall but nothing really. These characters for the most part had nothing to do with Hawk. But if they are doing something totally new that isn't really connected to past games then yes I agree old characters don't need to come forward. But it always seems that a lot of weight is put on how past games shaped the environment.
DA is about the game world, not about the protagonist. DA is not like Mass Effect, or at least not like the Mass Effect trilogy. There is no Commander Shepard.
Playing DA offers continuity of game world ("continent," were I feeling alliterate), not character.

I wouldn't be opposed to seeing some of the old faces from previous games fighting or defending a village, heck I wouldn't mind seeing the Darkspawn messenger I let go in Awakening who decided to help people in trouble. I mean were at War our old companions are probably out there fighting just as much as we are so crossing some of their paths would be cool, Our Inquisitor may not know them but Varric may or even Cullen. An it maybe possible to recruit some of those old companions from past games to be Advisors rather than having them on our team.
I would rather have fresh face's with new story's and attitudes on my team personally.

Let me bring Sigrun and Nathaniel into the Inquisition in some aspect and I'm happy, these are the only two companions I want to return in any substantial role.
Well, that and Sebastian and his angry-at-Anders army/Kirkwall-Starkhaven alliance.

Much as I would love to have Nathaniel Howe back as a companion and LI, I'm resigned to it never happening since he is dead for many players. As others have said, having a dozen-plus potential squaddies would mean each one would get less content overall. Also, I really cherish the specific relationships between certain companions and their heroes. Just imagine the uproar if Alistair were in every game and romanceable by the Warden, Hawke and the Inquisitor. ("He cheated on my Warden!")
One way to increase the number of available companions might be to have character-specific DLC like the Stone Golem. That way any development time spent on the character would be in addition to rather than detracting from the time spent crafting the regular companions. I don't know if Bioware would consider that since not all characters are universally loved, so it could be a bad investment. I could see a Zevran DLC selling well, but possibly not a Nate one *sniff*

This is why you have a choice...if you completely read my post you have the option of continuing or completely having a new experience or mixing the two. I am aware that Varric, the story teller is coming back as a companion.
Think about it, this would be extremely expensive and difficult to implement (way too many variables) for no extra payoff. They would have to make three times as many companions, three times as much dialogue, hire three times as many voice actors, three times as many cutscenes, etc...Something like this would also bring the game down to the level of a fanfic.

It comes down to resources:Time, money and personnel. The story and dialogue the writers wrote was finished quite awhile ago to allow the programmers, artists, animators and others to do their jobs. The game is scheduled to come out in November. Nothing new is going to be added. The game is in the polishing phase. The game is being tested to remove glaring bugs and some subtle ones. (All the bugs will probably not be caught. I have yet to see it happen in any program).
The developers have already stated that there will be no immediate companion DLC.
Bottom line if it is not in the game already it will not be there.
