If I see something scary or disturbing I usually turn my head/ take my headphones off, but say we have to fight it, then you have to actually look at it, which I can understand would be awful!

I can recommend fighting it both virtually and mentally, as you combat it in the video game, fight it in your mind. It can't hurt you. To it, you are far stronger :)

On another note, sometimes psychiatrists/therapists use something called Exposure Therapy where you are forced to face your fears in a very real way. This can help by showing you the outcome of being exposed to your fear is not bad.

If you can't take it in all at once, then glance at it. Warm up to it. Get used to it. If you're prepared for what you'll see then you won't be afraid. Most fear originates from undesired or unknown outcomes. If you know, you'll be fine.

I'm pretty sure 99% of the images I found about typophobia were photoshopped just to scare people with trypophobia.

edit: I think I just triggered someone with "typophobia," sorry.

Agreed. The only real ones I saw were a guy with a burn/rash and a dog with a ton of ticks in the ear :(

it is photoshopped, they use a lotus seed pod and photoshopp it on a part of the human body, knowing it's photoshopped doesn't help at all :(

I would ask how one would study up on trypophobia or how to overcome it?

Growing lotus pods?  I won't link.

It's okay to be creeped out by things, even to an extreme degree.  I hate bugs--I won't say I'm phobic, because it doesn't really affect my behavior apart from some comical squeaking noises if one sneaks up on me.  I just squash them and get on with my life.  Desensitizing measures, slow, over time, do seem to help a lot of people with phobias--if they're conducted properly, in safe, calming ways.

Fear response--like any habitual response--is aggravated by unprepared repetition.  Killing a habit of mind or emotion is hard, because the brain is built to create them and perpetuate them.

Jesus, I just google searched "Trypohobia" and I must say that was pretty bad for me. I literally had to exit out of the page because it was hard for me to look at, I guess all you can do is use the Tactical view like someone said earlier. Everyone has different fears, so to judge the OP is definitely NOT okay.

Okay, well first off, I just want to express my shock at some of the insensitivity in this thread. The OP is not saying they shouldn't have included it, they asked how he will be able to play the game with that in it. Obviously, they can't account for everyone's fears, as there are a wide array of different phobias. You can't just will away a phobia, trauma, or mental illness, though, obviously, treatment can help.

OP: There's some good comments in here from others with this phobia, OP. I might suggest either asking somebody else to play that part for you or skipping it entirely if at all possible. Once the game comes out, it will probably be fairly easy to find out what it is (you might get slightly spoiled), where it is, and whether you can get around it. If not, as mentioned, maybe get somebody else to do it for you OR attempt it yourself on your terms, hopefully when you feel up to it. At least you'll know it's coming.

I had to look up Trypophobia since the OP couldn't be bothered to explain what it means or provide pictures to show which monster s/he was talking about.

(Pet peeve: I REALLY hate it when people make a new thread asking about something, but then don't provide sources, pictures, or proper descriptions so people can comment or answer properly. If you're going to make a thread, don't make people try to guess or run off to do independent research because you wouldn't take thirty seconds to describe what you're talking about.)

Having looked up Trypophobia, I realized it's the fear of objects with lots of small holes (especially holes with something inside of it). I have the same phobia and I'm horrified and disgusted by the same monster. I might need to get my significant other to take over that part of the game and play it for me while I look away, because looking at it makes me physically ill, and makes my skin start to hurt because I imagine it filling with the same dozens/hundreds of horrible little holes.

OP I do not have trypophobia but I can sympathise with one's phobias making a game a bit difficult to play (as a nyctophobe Alan Wake is almost impossible for me to play, but I'm getting there). I am afraid I cannot provide a concrete solution, perhaps you should do as others suggest and expose yourself gradually to certain things (perhaps a small sponge or a piece of cinder toffee to start with?) and until then do what myself and my brother did when we were children, have an understanding relative or friend play through the parts that are affecting you.

I sincerely apologise if I sound like I'm being insensitive, I'm not a fantastic helper.

OP, from my own experiences in working my own feelings and thoughts, I wish to share this with you.  This stuff may sound crazy but I assure you it is not.  What you are afraid to face within, is where insanity is born.

The thing to understand is that you are holding a feeling-thought which is triggered.  Say to your mind "mind, I know this is not real, it is a game, and I don't want to be afraid of this anymore."  Understanding how we affect ourselves is key.  Your body is responding with a sickly feeling once the deeper feeling-thought (belief) is triggered [psychological in nature; seeming a real threat but is not at all].

Note: Feelings have a thought counterpart.  You feel something, and then assigned a thought to it (which has become a subconscious belief).  While adressing beliefs in and of itself is relatively simple, without addressing the associated feeling, even beliefs can be difficult to let go of and/or change.

Something you can work with, and this is helping me also.  A simple practice to allow suppressed feelings to emerge and be released.

1. Choose to have the courage to allow feelings to emerge that you have been surpressing (for whatever reason/s).

2. When you feel it, ask yourself "what a I feeling right now?" (ie fear, anger)

3. Now, allow yourself to feel it (rather than suppressing it out of fear, or perhaps considering it wrong/bad/weak etc to feel this way)

4. Ask this feeling "what is the message you have for me?"  Listen to the answer.  Your emotional intelligence is expressing itself and is worth listening to.

5. Choose to let go of the feeling now.

__________________________________

Hopefully some of this may be of assistance to you.  The inner workings of self can be mysterious until you begin looking within to understand what's really going on.  In short: illusions; and we can scare (fear-full) the bejesus out of ourselves with our imagination, or otherwise (ie joy-full), depending on how you are currently configured to function (this means, what you believe about you and Life, and to be sure there are many beliefs operating within your subconscious mind, most of which have been forgotten about, yet are still in full operation within)

My Spider tactic:

1. Switch to Casual

2. Implement some kick-ass AI Tactics (Google if necessary)

3. Mute the volume

4. Unpause and let the companions do all the work. Leaving the room optional.

I also saw a depiction of an anime girl pulling something out of one of the holes, and although I can't read Japanese, the amount of hearts in the dialog boxes gave me some strange ideas about what was happening.

i don't know if you can describe something whit out thinking of it..thinking about what it is I immediately get sick
I didn't post pictures for the same reason. Nobody asked what monster I was talking about because there was only one crab like creature in the last trailer, witch I mention..I do apologise if you got the impression that I didn't do all that out of laziness

To the people with this phobia, do you have a friend or relative who can just do this battle for you?

Out of curiosity how severe are the symptoms. I've had only one paralyzing panic attack in my life (lost consciousness for a few seconds) and that's because a huge fishing hook stuck into my finger and I was about 10 yo. Had to punch it through the other side to cut the barb. :P

Another one that I don't think that qualifies but made me kind of dizzy for a few seconds, is watching a scene towards the end of the movie Hannibal, but if I'm to rewatch it now I'd probably cheer to it. That was the case with medical dramas as well.

Spoiler

Hannibal movie spoiler.

What does your phobia feels like, the first or the second? If it's the second I doubt you'll have any problem dealing with it, other than the cutscene. Zoom out, attack it from the back, lower difficulty as well. If it was me I'd try to get extremely angry at it. I mean everyone gets grossed out at something.

Googling images associated with this, I felt some aesthetic repulsion for some (tattoos and artificial), the skin ones were as gross as any skin disease and the inanimate ones (like sponges) were irrelevant.

I don't see what's so bad about--JFC

Don't google image search "trypophobia" unless you want to see a whole lot of photoshopped pictures of people with holes in their skin.  Apparently the search for this phobia is designed to give you the phobia.

I feel your pain. You see, I share your trypophobia, or irrational fear of Holes. I'm so scared of Holes, that every time I see Shia LaBeouf it makes me want to cry.

I can understand that it's no fun to deal with phobias in game. I don't have trypophobia, but I do have a phobia of deep, open bodies of water and so in any game with swimming I always pretty much have to either suck it up or have someone play parts for me. We have to understand though if they tried to take every phobia into account they wouldn't be able to do anything, so it's just something we have to get over if we really want to play the game. ^_^

For the OP and everyone who has phobias they want to avoid, have you seen this new database of phobias in video games?  I don't see trypophobia listed yet, but you could request that they add that to their list.

My plan for spiders is every time I enter an area likely to have spiders I'll turn the sound down, go into tactical mode and send my least favourite companion ahead to scout for me... if spiders suddenly attack him/her I won't see it cause i'll be back with me at the last safe area so I can just keep an eye on their portrait and see if they're being attacked. Then I'll go to tactical view again, set up my tactics and let it play, keeping an eye out in case I need to adjust things though I'll be watching companions or portraits more than spiders. I feel better about spiders because I have a plan and oddly I feel better about having companions I'm not terribly interested in because now I have a use for them... spider bait. It's easier for me if they don't scare me by suddenly appearing out of the damn ceiling (whether the ceiling exists or not) and I don't hear them. Of course if a mod comes out I'd take that too.  :P

At OP I understand this is going to be difficult for you especially as it sounds more like a physical reaction of nausea to the point of vomiting rather than anything else. I have a similar reaction to the sight of blood and realistic descriptions of gore and medical things in general to the point I will throw up over it and very easily too. When I have blood tests I don't look and if possible I avoid anything that will trigger the reaction... fortunately games, movies and even many vampire shows etc don't trigger that reaction for me, perhaps because I know they aren't real while medical shows with real patients and conditions do trigger it.

I would agree with others that maybe getting someone to play that part for you if it is necessary might help and avoid it if you possibly can otherwise. I'm not sure how common an enemy this will be but I hope most of the time there's a different path you can take, otherwise you can try my spider bait tactic and send your least favourite companion(s) at it and concentrate on whatever else is around it. Or overwhelm it with all your other companions while you concentrate on anything else... basically if you can't get someone else to play that part and you can't avoid it I suggest companion shield and don't look.  ;)

Not sure if that helps but I hope you get through it one way or another.
