Speaking of dwarves, I wonder how many people would have jumped at Varric if he were available.

(I know he's not and that's ok, we need o respect that, but it's food for thought anyway)

To the BioWare team:

I want express my deepest regrets for all the negative and condescending feedback the BioWare team has received in the past few days in regards to the announcement of DAI’s LIs.  While there have been many honest, heartfelt, and understandable comments, there has also been, IMO, too many ignorant and careless accusations and retorts.

While I admit I was disappointed to hear about Vivienne and Varric not being LIs, and have in the past wished I had other options, I completely understand the reasoning behind it.  With a large, diverse fan base and a set number of characters and LIs, not everyone is going to get what they expect or want. Not only that, but it’s understandable that a romance arc does not always fit into a character’s personal background or story. It’s impossible to please everyone, and I can understand not wanting to create LI’s at all.

Nevertheless, I have to say I am EXTREMELY grateful that you do continue to offer this content. While romance arcs are not the purpose of the game, for me, they make the experience even more rewarding. I love that my hero can go adventuring and battle enemy forces to save the world, and still be able to build meaningful friendships and intimate relationships with various companions. It makes my hero feel more realistic and personal. Even when my initial expectations and wants were not met, I have found the BioWare stories and characters to be profound and rich, which offsets the limited setbacks I felt.

I wholly believe that your team strives to create an exceptional gaming experience that centers on a profound and captivating story. Both the Mass Effect and Dragon Age worlds have such deep and rich lore that I know had to be a huge, and hopefully, rewarding undertaking. I am grateful for all the creative and beautiful art and entertainment that your teams have created. So simply…

Thank you so very much!! All your efforts and considerations are much appreciated!  :)

I'm really not seeing any of the NPC's as being particularly old.  They all seem to be in the same general age range.  One of the devs described the Inquisitor as being a "leader of leaders," which would necessarily entail a slightly older group of people since the very young normally haven't worked up to a position of authority.

And I certainly think it's spurious to claim one's available LI's as being "too old" indicates an intentional slight on Bioware's part against a particular demographic.  Just because you don't have much interest in your available options doesn't mean you should personalize it as some kind of attack.  It's simply a matter of personal opinion and the subjective nature of attraction.  Zevran was the only gay male option in Origins.  He's not really my type, but a lot of people (male and female) thought he was the most attractive LI in the game.

I actually feel kinda guilty for not planning to play s/s or cross-gender.

I can't read the tone in that comment, but I'll answer generally because I've been thinking about the other posts on the subject as well. Oh dear, this is going be a long one again!

DAI is not a sensitivity contest so no-one should feel bad about self-gating content designed to appeal to a range of people. However, I do think that role-playing different genders takes you on an extra different journey than can be really interesting, but it is by no means obligatory.

I know some men will self-gate even multiplayer characters, I remember ME3MP forum posts from people who would not run as female humans, Quarians etc because they were girls... and I'm sure some will run into this issue with DAMP characters unbelievably. (Back to Battlefield 4 for them then...)

We all have different lines we choose (or choose not) to cross.

This game (time dependent), I'll not only play:

  • Male PC romances female, I'll also romance:
  • Female PC romances female, and
  • Female PC romances male.

But for the first time, I'll run a Dorian play-through:

  • Male PC romances male

I've never done that in a game before, but Dorian is such an awesome character.

To people who game with an 'insert self' mindset, these must seem locked off.

That's ok, I respect it, it's not in any way bad at all, just a choice.

(like choosing not to do the multiplayer or be a Rogue, or romance at all - all choices)

But when I role-play female, for example, that doesn't mean I am female or that it actually gives me real insight into being female or that when I do that I authentically role play as a female, I mean what do I know?

But in my role play I am reacting to male NPCs in the context of the game, as a female character in the same way that as other games give me the chance to role play something that I am not: An assassin, or a Bad Ass, or Batman. (none of whom I am, - though I know Batman frequents the forum).

Playing another gender or sexuality does not turn me female or gay, it doesn't change my sexuality just by role-playing a character, and I enjoy the romance for the quality of the writing and to see my character get it together with a love interest (sweet), not as some kind of erotic experience (if you look to Dragon Age as your source of eroticism you need to get out more!)

Dorian:

Romancing Dorian is a play-through that gives me a certain sense of anticipation.

It's a line I haven't previously crossed.

DAI is in no way intended to be a 'gay-simulator' ! But to role-play as a gay PC romancing an awesome Tevinter mage with the moustache of coolness who also happens to be gay? I've never taken such an opportunity in a game, and here it is, so I'm taking it.

A game that allows you to role-play in the guise of a different type of character, or gender or sexuality, even briefly in a fantasy game setting, is offering something quite special.

And as a bonus, walking in the shoes of someone else not like yourself is a tiny but useful step in understanding and respecting them more in real life.

Because male inquisitors don't get to bang an elf doesn't mean it's 'sexist'. I'm sorry, but their definition of sexist in this scenario is wrong. Is it unfair? Yes. In the same way it's unfair that no one can romance a dwarf.

I did say I didn't agree with Aulis. My post's point was about Aulis' post not being against Sera/lesbians, but elves in general.

I do not entirely agree, lot's of people buy their games just because they give the extra 'LI' Content. It's not a 'nice to have' option Bioware can turn off, you'd get ME3 like protests. They do make nice games, I mostly only play bioware games, but with DAI I'm really very curious about why Vivienne is not a LI. She was marketed quite heavily during the campaign, which makes it even more strange,... unless she turns out to be part of the bad guys, who knows...

I'm still very excited for this game, even if nobody is romanced in the end I've done it before and loved the experience enough. Even though I am also disappointed, I'd like to think upon playing the game I'm going to understand the reasoning more behind such decisions and accept them wholeheartedly which will honestly likely be the outcome. Thanks for even giving me the possibility to consider a same-sex romance, since I've finally accepted myself I can finally portray it in this game-world, it's just a shame Iron Bull might break me in the process lol.

Oh, I find a good way to not get caught in the 'play as myself' mentality

is to play as another race when role-playing as another gender or sexuality.

My romances with Sera and Dorian will be as an elf.

My Blackwall romance will be as a Dwarf.

Iron Bull will be romanced as a Qunari PC.

My only straight male human playthrough will be with Cassandra.

See this time I want to kind of play with more side of myself, Shephard had aspects of me but my Warden-Commander especially and Hawke did not. With the Inquisition, I want to leave Thedas in a way I personally would do, this is probably the one game I want to completely be emotionally and personally invested in for the first time.

You know, if his chest hair was more impressive I might... He's too much of a "Bro" for me - it'd feel awkward, He's like my Cool Uncle. And I'm like Grunt/Cole's Cool Uncle - I wouldn't romance either of them cause it'd be weird.

Can't wait to Climb The Wall though. Or Ride the Bull. Go on a Mustache Ride... Okay, I ran out of Innuendo's -- Sue me.

Although I probably won't actually play a straight male to romance Cassandra, I just love her accent.  I probably will play a straight female at some point to romance Cullen.  I find him really attractive, and Greg Ellis has a great voice.  But romancing him as a mage seems like a fascinating dynamic.  Given his complicated history with mages, I'm betting that there will be a lot of interesting facets to explore.  Hopefully the devs were able to weave some of that in.

These forums would implode perhaps, but the vast majority of the DA fanbase would remain intact. These forums are the only place I have been on the internet (well, maybe Tumblr but many of those people are one and the same) where the romance content is treated as either a hugely important part of the game, or THE MOST important part of the game.

You have to remember that for a great deal of the fanbase (and even a fair few on here, such as myself) the romance content IS a "nice to have" option, that would in no way break the game if it wasn't added, or if we didn't like the LIs for our demographic. There is a reason that the content is optional.

We just have to remember sometimes that these forums represent a very small (and VERY vocal) part of the fanbase, and what "we" want isn't necessarily what the fanbase as a whole wants.

I don't believe you intended it this way, but this sounds sexist.

There's no reason a heavily marketed female needs to be a love interest or should even be expected to be one.

And I say that as someone who REALLY wanted her to be a romance.

I respect your honesty and appreciate your feedback. I understand where you are coming from, but to some degree, respectfully disagree.

I primarily play BioWare games myself, and the biggest reason is because of those relationships that can be formed between the hero and companions. Still, they aren’t the core aspect of the game; and while I understand there are others who play these games for that sole purpose, Bioware doesn’t have to incorporate them in the game if they deem it’s too much of a hassle. Sure, there would be plenty of people up in arms about it, but I honestly feel there would still be many people who would continue to purchase and enjoy their games. Especially, when considering how BioWare could redirect those funds and their efforts towards other aspects of their games. I love RPGs, and BioWare does them very well IMO. However, there are other RPGs that have limited or nonexistent LI content that do well too.

My point is that not everyone is going to get what they want. As much as the writers and devs try, there are always going to be people who are disappointed for one reason or another. I respect honest and open comments and opinions, but firmly believe that people need to be respectful and more considerate when they post. Our emotions are natural, but letting them get carried away in angry or careless rants is inappropriate. And in the face of all those reckless and demeaning remarks, I appreciate that BioWare continues to listen and consider fans opinions, and continues to incorporate and improve romance arcs in their games.

As far as Vivienne is concerned, I too am curious as to why she’s not a LI. I was really looking forward to discovering her romance arc. I wagered she would be an LI; IMO, it made perfect sense. Although, that perfect sense may go right out the window once I get to know her character better. Garrus in the first ME was marketed heavily too and  he wasn’t an original LI, so I never really saw that as a factor. Your idea of her possibly being “part of the bad guys” is interesting. It would make for a twisted and interesting story, if not a bit heartbreaking.

Is irritating that people are so angry about straight females have 2 extra Li's that a race gated, especially when women who complained about ME3 potentially giving them 0 straight choices were usually told to shut up & accept it :?

Given that there are twice as many male companions as there are female companions, it makes perfect sense that there are twice as many romance options for straight females as there are for straight males, statistically speaking. Who cares if it's 'fair'. There's no reason why it should be.

I am, however, a tad disappointed with the options that were given. Both Cassandra and Josephine are rather unattractive. Not that making Sera or Vivienne romanceable would've helped with that, mind you. Guess I'm skipping romance for my male characters in this game.

It does seem... odd that Bioware would choose to make all female companions/advisers (other than Leliana) unattractive. Especially given that Cassandra was actually rather attractive in DA 2.

Is that really the case? With lots of people?

I can not imagine someone buying game just for that. I mean... It's still very small part of the game. And it sounds like they do not enjoy anything else there, since they buy it just because there is extra LI content. So how does it work? They go through all the fightings and story (which is core of the game) like through necessary evil? They have to suffer to get to romance bit? If that's really the case I simply do not get it.

I understand that someone may find romances very important. I really do. But I still think most people will buy it just to fight stuff, save the world and all that.

So there should always be an equal number of female to male characters? They should go through Inquisition and count up the NPCs and make sure they are exactly equal?

Gender equality means that both men and women can become the CEO of a major corporation if they both have the skillset and determination. It means that you won't be judged for being a certain gender in a certain social situation. It does not mean that men and women must be numerically equal in all scenarios. That's just unnecessary political correctness.

No. No. No. I've said before, it's not about equal numbers, it's about equal opportunities. Female inquisitors have multiple elven love interests but males have NONE. Not even one, it's just not an option for them, and that is what is wrong.

It's a bit like saying that women can have any leading function in a company, except being the CFO. For no apparent reason except that those who choose the CFO just don't care for a woman in that particular position.

I don't speak Chinese, do I? Am I that hard to understand?

I have read most of this thread but this is not an answer to anyone, just my opinion.

To make things easier I'll just say it from the start: I am a woman. I am 24 years old. I am from Sweden. I am straight. I am in a serious relationship going on it's fourth year. That's me.

I have been a huge fan since DA:O came out. I still play a couple of playthroughs a year.

Anyway, as a straight female who is much into gaming I could complain about almost always having to play a male character and if there is any romance to be had; persuing women. I don't. Cause it's a game. I have some health issues and no matter of how much I deam of doing parcour that's not gonna happen - so Altaïr/Ezio/Desmond will just have to do it for me. And I have no problem with putting myself into his shoes and help him find love - no matter what game I play.

As a female, to be able to play a female character that actually wears armour instead of fighting basically naked was fantastic to me!

To "find" love as this female? Wonderful! Bioware did that for me.

And you know what? To play as a homosexual male cousland who married the Queen and kept the love of his life; Zevran, as a lover was great fun!

Or to win the heart of Morrigan with my male Dalish elf - covered in Vallaslin.

As was playing as a lesbian Hawke, flirting like crazy with the oblivious Aveline and eventually finding love in Isabella.

Oh and I love playing as "slutty" Warden and Hawke, sleeping with everyone I could get my hands on!

I am not a man, gay or straight. I would never put a tattoo on my face. I am not bi or a lesbian. And I would never, ever, cheat on my boyfriend.

I am not a warrior or an assassin.

But that does not mean I cannot enjoy pretending to be one?
Isn't that half the fun of roleplaying?

But, I do understand the disappointment. I was hoping to romance Varric and let's say Cullen would not have been romancable or male only, and that I as a straight female "only" got Iron Bull and Solas I would probably have been disappointed. Really disappointed.

But as a straight female I am rather pleased. I am not used to a situation like this, where we get the "best" romance options.

I sympathise with the disappointment, but not with the anger in general. Face it straight men - you usually get the better deal in games, movies and tv-series.
I don't blame you for it nor does it make me angry. But please don't get so angry when for once it's a bit different.

And most importantly...we'll get a great story.  We know this! For all it's faults DAII had a great story. And Origins was amazing!
Let's just try to enjoy it. The game is after all not about finding someone to sleep with, that is just a bonus!

I am sorry if I am at all unclear or rambling, I have been very sick for a week now and have gone without food since tuesday...

Especially since looking up recordings on youtube or whatever is a lot easier. That "motivation" for buying a game falls short. You buy it cause you want to play the thing, not to have a few romantic talks every 20 hours of gameplay.
