Well yeah the game would flop if no straight men bought it. It would also flop if "the women and LGBT people that buy these kind of games" didn't buy it. Because we're half the market demographic. But even if we have been significantly less than half of the player base in previous games (which I'm skeptical about, at least for DA2), in the context of this question it doesn't matter, because the amount of money Bioware can make by persuading non-straight-dudes to play their game is VASTLY more than the amount of money they could lose from a couple dozen guys quitting the franchise because they "only" have two romance options. The majority of players won't even KNOW whether they have more or less choice than other groups would have, because they'll only pay attention to their own flirt options, and they'll only play one possible combo.

 

Boom. There's the truth of it. It's good to remember that us forum-goers are a small percent of the people who will buy these games. Thus most of the straight guys wouldn't even KNOW that straight women have more options than them. And maybe there's some who will rage-quit when they realize they can't romance Sera, but Bioware doesn't care cuz those dudes will have already bought the game.

 

EDIT: To put it bluntly, there are not enough straight men on these forums that even if all of them refused to buy the game, it would ever affect DAI's sales in any appreciable way. And we KNOW that not all the straight men here are gonna boycott the game. I'd wager 90% of the people who are disappointed in the LIs are still gonna buy the game. So that all adds up to a TINY number of angry straight guys. No, DAI's sales are gonna be just fine.

Have you ever considered that the reason straight men are the 'main group' who buys games is BECAUSE they are typically the demographic most catered to? It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe it's entirely plausible that if games/marketing were as geared/catered toward women and LGBT people as they currently are toward straight men, that women/LGBT people would become the 'main group' that bought them.

 

I don't think women and LGBT folks are inherently less interested in games than straight men are. I just think a lot of us have taken a look at the games that offer women and LGBT folks a chance to feel included, seen how few games like that exist, and then have chosen to either pursue other hobbies, OR to stick with those few games that DO acknowledge our existence (such as Bioware's games).

 

So until Bioware included LGBT content in their games you never played games at all and now that they have you only play bioware games?  You don't purchase games by other devs?

 

It's good to have other hobbies.....its good to move on when something makes you so bitter and so annoyed you constantly have to complain about it.  At the end of the day if something is so negative to you its not good to dwell on it.

 

I don't think who you want to have sex with has ANY bearing on whether you like video games or not.  I don't think theres a single guy/woman that has said...omg thats a nice ass right there....makes me want to go play some Mario.  ever.

I play very few games, but I'll always buy Bioware's because of their inclusivity. I bet there's lots of other people that picked up Dragon Age specifically because of the LGB content.

 

*raises hand* Yep, if my brother-in-law hadn't phoned me to tell me that our female character (we had been playing the game together at his house) had just had a love scene with a FEMALE pirate, I wouldn't have researched the game further, purchased it, OR purchased the xbox I needed to play it on.

Of course not. I played games before Bioware. I love games. But there was always something missing. Now that I know what I was missing (inclusivity, acknowledgement of my existence as a person and a consumer of games), yes, my small gaming budget goes almost exclusively to Bioware games (there are some exceptions, but they all are inclusive in some way or another, because those are the companies I want to support).

 

Also, there's no need to be rude. Pushing for representation and inclusion in a media I love is not being "bitter and annoyed". 

 

I don't even understand what you're trying to say to me with your last sentence. I'm pretty sure I never said that wanting to have sex with pixels is why people play games. 

 

HOWEVER, a game acknowledging that LGBT people exist, that LGBT romances exist, that women exist? Is a game I am much more likely to buy. *shrug*

*rolls eyes* I know... it's just too much to hope for that someone else in the industry wakes up and smells the female/LGBT POTENTIAL CASH FLOW. 

That would depend on how many avid female and LGBT gamers there are within those respective communities. At present, BW is in the process of courting this demographic. It may inspire more females and gay people to want to play video games, and if successful at doing so, then you can expect more of such content from BW. That's just how it works.

I bought an XBox 360 solely to play ME3MP with XBox-only friends I had made on the forum, despite the fact that I already owned a PS3 and already played the game on that primarily. Is it really that different?

That's not for gaming.  They literally said the only reason they got it was because of a type of relationship in the game.  Not because it was fun, not because they liked games, not because they got addicted at their brother in laws house.  Gaming isn't in the equation as told by the person who posted.

My money's on the first mods being 'X more beautiful mod' while trying to find pictures before I some how stumbled on a whole forum of people claiming to try their hardest to make whitewash mods and mods to 'fix' those same sex romance 'bugs' with Sera and Dorian. *shudders* That place was just so full of sheer bitterness.

I didn't buy a system for DA2, but DA2 is the first Bioware game I played because that was the one my friend were currently talking about. And they told me I could play as a gay man and romance another man. So yeah, DA2 was my intro to Bioware too. I loved it and I still love it.

 

(EDIT: okay technically I played NWN, but that was a looong time ago and I didn't even realize it was a Bioware game at the time)

The idea that someone who is bi/pan/non-defined in their sexuality or doesn't talk about their sexuality, is flawed, or a "blow up doll" is really awesome to hear over and over again.  Representation for different sexualities is good, but I really wish people would stop framing it as a victory against "unrealistic" people.  This and the sentiment that "straight" Solas is better than a "bi/pan" Solas would be because of reasons that sound suspiciously like the whole "bi people are all promiscuous" bs is a reason I can't stand to be over in that thread anymore.

I was in love.

My first BW game was Neverwinter Nights. I had a 7 AM class back then and would wake up at 4 AM each day so I could be this bad ass Druid chick. I mean, at the time, I had always played JRPGs, which had set stories and characters, so making my own PC was totally new to me. And I didn't even know there was such a thing as romance until I got the Shadows of Undrentide expansion and my PC somehow got into this relationship with Valen Shadowbreath. I freaking adored it. Now I was not only this woman hero but my character could enter a relationship on her *own terms*...that was it, I was a Bioware fan for life.
