What really bugs me is the way writers are being treated like Pez dispensers. The goal is to tell a good romance story, not to fill a quota.

I want a good romance story. I personally can't believe the existing romances couldn't have done with the additional time and resources, given my experience of all their other romances. I find their choice very strange but yeah their entitled to go for whatever split they want.

Silly Goose, I love his puppy eyes too!

Spoiler

I don't typically fall for angsty people - but... He's kinda like Cullen - He's got a reason to be apprehensive and spiteful.

And what if not? Right now we don't know anything, but it's valid to suspect we will only see them in short periods of time between missions, basically long distance relationship, making it automatically a lesser option than romance with companion.

I think there are different missions where you can have them with you, for example the one mission in the Demo with Leliana.

It was specifically stated by the devs a while back that the advisors have an equal amount of dialogue lines as the party romances. So fret not, you will be on equal footing.

It's valid to suspect yes, but I would like to remain optimistic about the advisors. If the devs say they have as much content as the companions, then the only thing we can do is trust them on them. Be wary, but trust that Cullen and Josephine have much depth in their romance. I won't lie and day I am not worried. In reality, I am a little. But the game isn't out yet, so the only thing I can do is give the benefit of the doubt.

With that said, I want to express my appreciation for Bioware with all the work they have done. You guys are awesome!

it would have been interesting to see how the response would be if the extra romances were only for straight males..

I would still be pissed (seeing as I wanted more bi options) but many many female gamers who are saying to others that they should stay calm would rage

I think the problem is that some of your posts (like this one) make a lot of assumptions.

The fact that Bioware worked hard to make sure that people actually had options (as opposed to being forever alone or choosing the one option slated for you) is admirable because they could have just stayed with the industry status quo and not included anything but straight male romances.

Ah, so the mask comes off. So what are you saying is that, so long the straight males get less, all is good, right?

I'm saying we are the only group that has no right to complain and get angry about it because we have had more in the past name a Bio-wear game were we have had no romances.

you are not missing out on any content its all still there for you may or may not choose to use it is your Choice.

I can understand disappointment. I also think that Bioware are amazing to include all sexualities in their games and i also like that the characters are not there purely for romance. There is more to them. I am looking forward to playing dragon age inquisition and thankyou to all the devs who put in so much time and effort and also for taking the time to converse with us.

But as Jtav and several others have pointed out, you haven't even played the game yet. So you can't possibly know how good/bad the 'core' romances are to warrant stating they need more time on them.

As for the choice, looking at it from a completely different angle. There is equality in the number of Males and Females from the Companions and Advisors that we can't romance. 2 Males (Varric and Cole) and 2 Females (Vivienne and Leliana)  :wizard:

Not sure about that "status quo" considering that some companies are way ahead of Bioware right now. Such Last of Us is bigger and more casual game than DAI, yet they weren't afraid to make one of protagonists gay and even dedicate the part of the game to her teenage romance.

I agree whole heartedly. It would be harder to argue the point due to the generally male centric nature of the gaming industry, but I would still fight as hard as I am now to try and make people see that bioware is being awesome by giving us ANY romances. Gaider himself has expressed that it is a lot of work to do just to be berated by people who didn't get exactly what they wanted.

I don't remember paying anything extra, wasn't that DLC already in the box?

I had to buy him separately so I guess not in every one.

And I feel like it was not worth it romance wise as well, but that's different kind of thing. Though I wonder if anyone would be satisfied with that kind of additional three liner romance. I liked the idea but it felt like it got less attention than it should.

Each game is its own discrete purchase.  Having more or less in previous purchases is irrelevant.

I believe that both you and Ray are right. This is its own seperate thing, but it would be like the top rated sports team complaining that they lost 1 out of 10 games. The sheer numbers kinda detract from the argument.

It's something that I don't want to spoil since it is a part of her story.  It's something that, when I learned about it, made me go "Okay that makes sense."  At least for me.  I'm sure some will disagree.

Note that this doesn't mean someone can't be disappointed because they found her attractive, or that specifically because she's a prominent woman of colour, it sucks to not be able to romance her specifically because our games haven't historically had anyone like her at all.

Which highlights the point that these characters are designed by Bioware. They're not people randomly dragged off the streets with the designers having no agency over who is represented.

After (I've tried to work it out but I might have missed some) 39 romances in Bioware games over the years (not including SWTOR) there have been only 2 who are with black characters; Aarin Gend (NWN) and Jacob Taylor (ME2) and that last one crashes and burns.

There may well be an aspect of Vivienne's character that makes her status as non-romanceable perfectly understandable but that doesn't distract from the point that she was designed by Bioware. The people in charge could very well have designed Josephine as a black woman. The fantastical nature of fantasy worlds should allow their creators free reign over the design of that world and the characters, and 2 out of 39 (0 out of about 18 if we're counting the female characters) romanceable black characters is a pretty bad return.

I don't want to sound like I'm having a rant or that I've got some kind of agenda (I'm quite surprised at myself for having looked into the numbers), but this does slightly stick in my throat. I suppose I think it's a shame more than anything.

I never asked to have more, nor I think I'm deserving of more then anyone else. I simply asked for an fair share. And I won't feel bad for an preference that was set by the industry, and not me. I simply find this reasoning ridiculous, it's just like saying that since the european exploited america and it's people in the past, people that live in europe today should be punished for the mistake of their antecessors.

yep definitely then we would have all these feminists storming the forums and declaring things like "no equality for women"
(like they did with Assassins Creed Unity lately, poor Ubisoft is almost being forced to include female characters and give them importance but thats another topic)

......its almost as if poor BioWare is being forced into writing Characters they dont want to write?
