There's an important point to be made here, though - in the past, LGBT and women players complained that games didn't cater to their preferences because there really, truly were no romance options available.

I was part of the push to get same-sex romances into ME3, which attracted an incredible amount of abuse and vitriol - but it was worth doing, and necessary, because there were no options at all for gay players and Bioware seemed confused about whether femShep/Liara qualified as a lesbian relationship. ME3's straight romances for women were pretty much a horror show.

Everyone gets at least two options in Inquisition. Everyone. Nobody is talking from a position of having no content for them at all, so it makes the complaining seem quaint in comparison to those older situations.

ME was always different topic because it was generally more casual and aimed at specific audience which isn't really known for its open-mindedness.

As for Dragon Age franchise, at least two options for everyone among companions (with straight women being favored as well) were already in DA2, and from my POV it's (possibly) step back from that right now given the questions about the advisor romances.

After reading this thread for a bit, the only conclusion I can come up with is to reveal all the Romances early. Rip that Band aid off so we can get past it quickly and focus on other things in the game.

Edit: Spell fail...

It's a couple of other games as well, but regardless, who exactly denied your point and what it's supposed to prove? I'm not speaking on behalf of straight male representation. Straight women have it worse than straight men, but undeniably lesbians are in worse situation than straight women.

Some specific theses of mine you have problem with? Then maybe discuss them instead of making such vague accusations intended to put me in bad light just because you don't like what I have to say.

I was simply responding to you, who addressed one of my posts. I didn't say you specifically were the problem, and if I have a specific bone to pick with you, I'll PM you. I don't know why you think I was targeting you; you are not the only one in here complaining.

Just focus on the Blackwall beards, Varric Chest Hair, and the possibility of Cullen being secretly as awkward as he was back in Ferelden when he was just getting started!

SPOILER WARNING! This post reveals all of the possible romance options that players will have in the game. If you want to keep the mystery alive until November, be forewarned. If you’re ready to find out now, keep reading!

.

.

Let’s take a moment to talk about romance in Dragon Age: Inquisition, shall we?

It’s quite valid to ask, “Why reveal which characters can be romanced at all? Isn’t it better to leave the mystery and let players discover the romances as they play?” While some players understandably prefer to start games completely unspoiled, the truth is that DA:I is huge. The story takes a great deal of time to unfold, as do the relationships players develop with followers. As a result, you could play the game for a significant length of time before discovering that a follower isn’t interested.

Again, many prefer that kind of discovery. Many players also have no interest in romancing anyone, and we’ve designed each follower to have a rewarding story arc for players who choose to engage with them, romantically or not. We’ve come to realize, however, that for many players, romances are an incredibly important feature—one in which we’ve invested a great deal of development time—and they prefer a heads-up to having their hearts set on a particular character, only to end up disappointed.

To preface this information, a few words on our design goals for romances: First, we want to offer choice to our players. This doesn’t mean that all choices are available to everyone—it means that no matter what type of character you choose to play, more than one possible romance option will be available. This doesn’t guarantee that a player will find a particular character to be personally appealing—which could be the case even if every character in the game could be romanced by anyone—but it ideally lets each player know they’re not an afterthought in our development process.

Second, we want our characters to be internally consistent. Every major DA:I character has a story arc, personal goals, and thoughts on how your journey together has evolved; sometimes a romance arc doesn’t make sense for them, sometimes it does. Either way, we aren’t trying to justify why a character can’t be romanced—we’re looking at how a romance with that character would make sense according to the rest of their story, and why that romance will strengthen an interesting story arc.

Finally, a character being eligible for a romance doesn’t necessarily guarantee that they will be successfully won over. These characters have their own agendas and opinions, and the choices a player makes during the game have a definite impact on their affections. That’s intentional.

With that in mind, we now reveal who can be romanced by whom. If you’re not interested in having that kind of foreknowledge before going into Inquisition, consider this fair warning and proceed no further.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Still here? Okay, then.

Here are our “core” romance options. They are available to players of any race, and fulfill our first design goal of providing multiple options to everyone:

  • Cassandra is interested in male characters.
  • Blackwall is interested in female characters.
  • Josephine is interested in both male and female characters
  • Iron Bull is interested in both male and female characters
  • Sera is interested in female characters.
  • Dorian is interested in male characters.

Two “additional” romance options were added to the game as a result of the extra development time DA:I received. They are more limited in scope, largely for reasons directly related to their story arcs, but are otherwise the equal of the other options:

  • Cullen is interested in female elves and female humans.
  • Solas is interested in female elves only.

This means that of our core cast, Varric, Vivienne, Cole, and Leliana are not romance options. While we know this may disappoint some fans who were interested in them, we don’t believe that they lose out, as each character engages in their own meaningful story.

We can’t wait for November, when you can finally meet these characters, help them tell their stories, and explore this enormous game with us.

Mike..

I loooooooooove you Laidlaw!!! Awesome! (ha! how shameless was that?!?!)

It was specifically stated by the devs a while back that the advisors have an equal amount of dialogue lines as the party romances. So fret not, you will be on equal footing.

Just to add to this: advisors get totally unique conversations with the Inquisitor because they're helping us on missions and during story events that the companions aren't a part of.

Mike mentioned an entire quest arc where Cullen is the major focus, and it includes travelling around different parts of Thedas.

I can't for the life of me stop smiling.. Sorry for others who were dissapointed by these news, but as a straight female who sometimes makes their female characters bisexual and mainly play as elves and humans, I am HAPPY (clap along if you feel like a room without a roof~!)

On top of this, wasn't it said all romantic dialogue would take place within Skyhold, anyway?

It would make sense, since it'd be tough to have romantic dialogue when you're sitting in the middle of a bog of undead, or with a Dragon looming overhead.

You forget IB's pecs, Sera's snorts, Cass' eyebrow-judgement, Viv the Beyonce of mages, Solas' bald head of good luck, Josie's dimples, Schmooples + Leliana and Cole's rare smiles. (also, Morrigan in a flouncy dress being grumpy about it)

Companions help us on missions whenever we want, we can take them wherever we want, and I'm certain there will be specific companion missions as well as always.

So in the end it makes it look better than those excuses for romances from ME3, but not necessarily as something in line with companion romances. But we will see - I'm just pessimistic about it.

Solas' Bald head isn't the one I want to rub... I should really not be able to comment about that man.

Though Schmooples+Leliana and possible Schmooples+Cullen... I still want that dwarf Dialogue..

If you'd told me ten years ago, or even three years ago that straight women would be getting the most options, I'd have laughed in your face. My only option in BG2 was Anomen. So who knows how things will look for s/s next game. I remember when devs said having a gay or lesbian character was pretty much off the table.

hmm in DA2 didn't they had the most options?, which was released 3 years ago.

I only just now came up with someone who might, maybe romance Cullen, and I'm getting a little sick of the advisor romances being denigrated out of hand. They allow for a completely different dynamic and LIs who wouldn't work as companions. If a romance is bad, it's because it's bad.

Lol, I remember the first time I played DAO I was in the middle of the night siege in Redcliffe when I accidentally clicked on Alistair and I get thrown into a cut-scene where he starts to tell me about his sister...I sat there panicking that we were going to die because I couldn't click through the answers fast enough.  I still don't remember what I said to him.

I think you'll just have to trust that there's an equal amount of content in the advisor romances, and that you see them often enough to mitigate any semblance of it being a "long distance relationship".

Since I think Bioware do earnestly try to improve on their past efforts, it seems likely that they'll have taken the feedback from the Sam/Steve romances in ME3 and put it to good use here.

Remember that the delay happened way after ME3 launched. There's been plenty of time to integrate lessons learned from that game.

I'm definitely going to romance Cullen, maybe try Josephine (I'm not all that interested, but she is a Beautiful woman.)

Worst I had, was I got one of those "Me or Her" conversations with Morrigan - while Leliana was right next to us.. Between waves of Werewolves.

4 straight options, 6 with s/s options and 'disappointed'.

6 s/s options? Pretty sure there are only 4 s/s options, Sera, Dorian, Josephine and Iron Bull

I just want to say: you should re write the whole story so that everyone gets EXACTLY the same amount of romances!!

J/k--that is completely ridiculous. I'm sure I will love your story, every game I have played from Bioware has astounded me with its depth, and the ability to truly make me love it's characters (not all of them, of course). I didn't like Mordin at first at all... And he ended up being a favorite. I hated Miranda, and while I didn't love her at the end, I held a strong and begrudging respect for her. Bioware's ability to mirror and imitate real life in the fantastical is almost unparalleled, and I laterally could not be more excited to play this game.

I hope that it's clear that despite the vocal minority, most people are excited whether disappointed they aren't getting EXACTLY what they want or not. I'm sure the options and choices will make sense, and I'm really looking forward to getting to know these people and the new Thedas.

Thank you so much Bioware for all your hard work, and for the large amount of effort put towards fairness.

I seriously love you guys.

I'm one of the weirdos who are really excited about non-companion romances.  (I was honestly more excited for Cullen's romance when I found out he was a non-companion.)
