I think that gaming would benefit by having gay and lesbian relationshps (and protagonists) feature more prominently than they do now.

I'm okay (and encourage) the idea of a game like Uncharted having a character that happens to be gay instead of straight.  I think (but am not 100% certain) that they may be going in the direction that Lara Croft is a lesbian with the reboot, which I think is also a good idea if so.

well, Lara Croft reboot is hot girl lol.

Gah, I'm still Crushin' on Solas. Dunno if I should make my Felf Inquisitor first, and Romance Solas/Cullen.

Or my Sassy Melf Inquisitor and Romance IB/Dorian.

MAYHEM ALL AROUND!

seemed more like just teasing to me

The game had audio dialogues talk about how Lara and Sam used to pick up guys together so probably not.

I wouldn't be adverse to bi or lesbian Lara but I'm just as certain we need more female leads in general.

And less sexualized ones too.

I'm just glad Lara actually looks like a human being again.

Male gamers are blissfully unaware there's more (very slightly) women than them now according to recent surveys.

For real? The last news i read only said that adult women surpassed teen boys as the larget gaming demographic in America?

I keep reading that people wished for the creators to spend more time with the six core romances rather than adding two more to make things unbalanced. But, here is a question...why should they spend more time with the six core romances if they feel they are developed enough. If you put too much effort into one area of the story, then it's either going to get redundant or overshadow the rest. In the case of the romances, the romance part of the six characters may overshadow the friendship parts or even their own personal arcs. So, I feel they went with another idea: bringing in two people to be romanceable that actually makes sense. If they say Vivienne not being an LI makes sense story-wise, then there must be a reason. Same with Varric, Morrigan, and Leliana. If there were good reasons why they couldn't be romanced, but there were good reasons that Cullen and Solas COULD be romanced, then I say they should go with it. They can't put too much focus on the romance of the core six without it overshadowing something or making it redundant.

And, as a fan of Cullen and I may be selfish to many for saying this, but I am glad the devs took the extra time they had to make him romanceable. If they didn't, I won't lie; I would've been disappointed. I would've just think of other ways to try to enjoy with what I have with the two males I would romance. But, knowing I have four, I will take advantage of it now rather than throw this opportunity to the side. Because I feel I may not get this many options in the future...or any at all considering the reactions to the romances.

Oh, I did not know that about Tomb Raider.  That would be cool if so.

I feel that, in general, female homosexuality will be much easier for main stream audiences to 'tolerate.'  I wish the same could be said for male homosexuality but in my personal experience, that is unfortunately much more negatively received.

As someone who is a heterosexual male this is pretty disturbing/disappointing news. Guess I just have to flip a coin then eh...sheesh.

We still get as many options as we did in DA2, DAO, ME1 and Jade Empire,

Fear Effect 2 illustrates how this could go terribly wrong (even if Rhianna Prachett has, upon looking it up, clarified she didn't intend for them to be romantically involved but just Besties).

I am the same about Josephine and Cassandra.

Ugh, I know right? Can you believe Bioware are making us Straight Male Gamers choose? The audacity!

But seriously though. While I'm really liking Josephine, I've really like Cass longer, so she gets to be my first.

Whether I romance Josie or Sera next depends on who won me over the most in my first playthrough.

it applies to games in general, accounting for every mobile game, RPG, RTS, iPad game so overall its really a meaningless tid-bit

The thing for me is not Vivienne being a LI its the Fact as a Hetero Male gamer that enjoys taking his LI with him everywhere we have one option Cassandra because Scribbles will remain in Skyhold and not journey with us.Gay female players are in the same boat they have only Sera because Scribbles once again remains in Skyhold. All in all Vivienne "Bi" would have solved both with 2 LIs that could accompany you on your journeys.

Dont get me wrong I am happy female gamers finally getting a better selection but in all honesty the unbalance regarding the LIs is disconcerning. And I am sure there will be a story reason for Vivienne not being an option but damn B-Ware couldnt you at least have given two Companion options for everyone.

The current highest gaming population is likely adult women due to the growing popularity in mobile games such as candy crush, etc.

I wouldn't say its meaningless, but it falls into the same pit falls that every other genre gets into that people that play one type of game won't neccesarily play another.  At least if the idea is if people think a large amount of these people will get into playing other games.

I'd be lying if I said not getting Vivienne didn't disappoint me.  As a black male I was looking forward to romancing a black woman for the first time in a Bioware game.  But if it doesn't fit her personality it probably wouldn't have been fulfilling anyway.  They keep saying Josephine is a woman of color but haven't released any materials that really show that.  Anyway I'll probably roll the dice with Cassandra my first time out.  Hot, useful, authoritative, and a romantic.  I love it.  Thanks for clearing this up Mike.  Looking forward to a great game.

I share you're dissapointment, I already told my wife (who's also black but doesnt understand that I can like a person made of pixels) that I would cast her aside if Viv would be available in november. She responded with *sigh*, here we go again,...

Bioware doesn't seem advisor LI as inherently lesser.  We also won't be able to tell until we actually play the game.

My wife's overwhelming hatred of Tali resolves from something similar.

Oddly, like a magic spell, I now have awoken and prefer Ashley.

I might be mistaken with Tomb Raider (it's been a while since I played it) unfortunately, based on some other comments.

I do agree with you that female homosexuality is seen as more acceptable.

I think there's a blog with a letter from Vivienne, and there's the video from her VA

Yes, the letter in the blog. That's the one I didn't find convincing and too unsubtle.

I've never walked away from a bioware game, even with my favourite romances, thinking anything other than it could have done with more content. So let's say i'm sceptical that they somehow have reached the maximum limit or that more content would be damaging. Also not a fan of such massive skews in variety of choice.

Of course, women have always been present in games but have been growing steadily for years.

I wrote an essay for college on how Final Fantasy changed the face of gaming for women.

I didn't get a good grade.

@wright1978: You have the right to be skeptical. I just think that if the devs feel like they reach the limit of what they can do with the core six without it being damaging, then why shouldn't they go to two people that CAN be romanceable? If it can add to them more, then I say go for it. Especially if it fits with their backstory and character in the story.

I've seen discussions about that Rhianna's Pratchett remark about Lara's possible homosexuality, and of course straight women were throwing accusations that it's pandering to men, and straight men didn't want to hear anything that could deny the status of Lara as their fictional wife. The same repeated during talks about Ellie in The Last of US.

Female homosexuality is less negatively received only in a sense that it's not taken seriously - that's also why in the media most of the time lesbian characters end up sleeping with men. Interestingly, despite this popular opinion that the public tolerates lesbian more than gay men, as annual GLAAD reports show, gay men make majority of all LGBT representation in Hollywood.
