Thank you for that post and I can really understand why this would be especially hard for you.

For me, it's that I so rarely get to play as a gay male, or even see gay men prominently in media. When I finally have the chance, playing the game again as anything else just isn't as enjoyable. I won't play a female to romance the extra characters. I'd love to see Solas's romance, especially, but it's just not the same experience. I've seen enough hetero romance in literally everything else. I can't really get into more when I have another option.

Thanks, Nocte. You're a pretty cool guy. :)

And what you added is stuff I also super relate to. We've seen/played/experienced heterosexual romances in all of our media, all our lives. Rolling a female to play a straight romance isn't this "trying something new/different!" experience that i keep seeing people describe it as. Being able to roll a gay/bi character who has a same-sex romance is far more novel an RPG experience, not rolling a straight character for a straight romance.

I can see why having the Gay character is so Important to you and why you would not want to role a hetero character,

Plus if you really interested in the Solas romance you can watch it if you have see it anyway.

This is a question I would like to here from your point of view, How do you feel about making a character for Sara's romance?.

That, I totally agree with. Bioware has established a strong precedent for making that type of character straight, you're right. Is that relative to real life stereotypes of flamboyance? To me, no, not really. It definitely has real world implications, but I don't think that's necessarily it. You're right that Cullen is a stereotype that Bioware seems to have trouble seeing as gay or bi and I think that does need to change. I'm not sure if it follows, though, that this means Dorian is a flamboyant character in the way gay men are typically portrayed in media.

Here are some of the stuffs I heard from Bioware forum people and real life people:

He cares about his looks, and it's being perceived by people I talked to as fashion stereotype with a "hag" that is Vivienne, which one of my close gay friends see as a stereotype.

His look resembles Freddie Mercury.

His class is a mage. Masculinity seems to define as toughness and rough, so it's more on the warrior's side.

I'm likely gonna go after Ironbull though, so I don't care about how Dorian's act. I just want to see how people see Dorian as the first gay companion and if he were a good representation. It would be nice to hear an opinion from the straight crowd.

For me, personally, I'm a lot more likely to try rolling a female if I can do a f/f romance with her. (whether I feel like I can comfortably play that female PC varies from day to day). It's more about the non-straightness of the romance than the gender of the character I'm romancing. I know some people feel differently, and the gender of their LI matters more than whether it's a s/s or m/f romance.

But yeah, I'm just not interested in seeing/playing out heterosexual romances (especially if I'm having to play the female in a m/f romance). These games are some of the only ones I can experience a s/s romance in, so I'm a lot more likely to be interested in that (f/f or m/m).

Well, to be honest, Sera isn't a character I feel like I would relate to much. It's nothing to do with gender or sexuality, she just seems to have very different views than I do and I don't feel like she's going to be one I mesh more so with. If it were a female that I liked more, then maybe. I just don't really have an interest in romancing females, to be totally honest. I feel like it wouldn't hold my interest incredibly. It's a different reason than why I wouldn't romance a male with a female. In this case, I just don't have that much interest in exploring that facet with them. I'd just rather see their friendship path, honestly.

See these are both perfectly good reasons especially considering the size of DAI it's a big time  commitment to stat a new game for something you may not enjoy or even care to see.

I too look forward to Dorian's Friendship path.

Please, please let this game be moddable to at least remove that mustache off Dorian, since he's pretty much the only romantically serious option (Iron Bull is about as serious a romantic option as Garrus).

Every time someone asks for this, the character artists go back into the game and make it bigger. Frostbite is also practically impossible to mod.

Have fun.

I can relate with this actually, I don't ever play males in games that give me a choice because once you have the option to be what you want to be, well it is hard to go with anything else. With most games forcing you to play something you're not, for me it's like, "ok, I've already played enough dudes for a lifetime, no way I'm actually choosing one here too". Even if this means missing out on appealing content, err, just can't bring myself to not choose female when I see the option, so I can understand perfectly well that point of view.

Not that I actually have an issue playing as male characters in other games, it's just for whenever a choice is given.

I do acknowledge that missing out on content because of this reason is entirely on me, hope no one takes this post as a complaint or anything.

I never got Liara's appeal at all.

But then again, some LIs just don't work for me.

And that's inevitable.

Sometimes, you're just not the person they're meant to appeal to.

I play women who like women if given the chance. Even though I knew I'd be locking myself out of romances, I played 6 female character in TOR before I picked up a guy.

This is when I learned that male characters a ton more flirt options than female ones. >_<

I still end up playing more men than women most years, but I play a lot more games than the average forumite, I suspect.

I'd romance Zaeed before I'd romance Liara's MPD self.

Straight female players get:

4 potential male love interests. 2 of them human.

Gay male options:

Iron Bull, which walks the line between humanoid and hulking beast.

And the guy with a hideous mustache.

How did you get an early copy of the game to know this information? Tell me your secrets.

And yeah I probably said it already but I'm pretty fine with any romance but m/f. I can do it I just prefer to do anything else. I'd rather do the f/f version of a romance than the m/f version. It feels...odd playing a man pursuing a woman.

Well I usually end up making them single jerks anyway if there's no males for them to romance so...problem mostly averted? If my options are play a single male or one romancing a female I'll usually pick the former. (With certain exceptions like Mitsuru and Miranda). I really have to like the female LI to play the m/f romance.

I like Kaidan the best as a romance in ME, because I'm kind of shallow and don't really like the alien romances. Maybe I would change my mind if they made some hot blue guys that just had a slight case of head tentacles.

I actually like to romance a Turian or be a turian and romance a human. It's a sci-fi games and alien romance would be nice role-playing experience for me.

I understand where you're coming from on this. It took me quite a long time to warm up to the idea of romancing garrus or thane just because of how alien they looked compared to... the only very slightly non-human looking female aliens. It really shows that they seemed iffy on showing really alien looking females.

I totally acknowledge it's entirely my opinion and Bioware has literally zero reason to cater to it, but I couldn't romance a Turian, especially. Thane was not quite as bad, but not preferable. The Turians are just too inhuman for me to consider romantically. It just gets super weird for me.

At the end of the day, it's about the personality. Garrus is a lot more popular than Kaidan with the ladies, and a lot of them don't like how he looks. I'm not too keen on how either Dorian or Ironbull look, but if they have a good personality, I may go for that. Let's get back to DA though since it got off-topic before with ME discussion.

I hope Bioware hires the goat simulator guys to release the sex goat simulator then (as dlc of course, with ties to MP).

That's easy to say, if you do really enjoy playing different sort of characters, but it's basically like telling some to just start liking chocolate ice cream if the store is out of vanilla. Sure, it would solve the problem, but it's not that easy to just start liking something when you don't.

they may surprise you once start playing. Some are just basing decisions on appearance and nothing else. Yeah people have rights to be shallow if they wish.

Edit to mention see next post, might already saw. I will apologize to you as well. I wont apologize to straight men though. Sorry.
