Hmm, given Iron Bull is Ben Hassrath, I'd say he's more the equivalent to a secret agent or a spy.

But in his case, a burnt-out agent who's sorta "gone native"

Someone should tell FPJ that just because he's a spy, he doesn't need to sound like Qunari Sean Connery.

Black women being portrayed as wild, animalistic, and hypersexual is a thing. Just like Latina women are "spicy" and Asian women are feminine and submissive.

The obvious solution to the issue of sterotyping is having lots of black women who display a wide-range of personality and viewpoint.

Anyways, wouldn't Duncan be black if Isabela is?

I think having more black characters would certainly help, since it's relatively easy to focus on the existing black characters we've had because there have been so few of them.

Since we are in Orlais and Ferelden, I think we can easily add representation via the Circle mages, as they, in theory, should have diverse populations.

I did some looking last, and I found two more characters that could be considered black:

Cahir, Prosper's Chasind soldier guy

and

Alain, the blood mage from DA2.

As we are in Ferelden, we could also see some black people in the Chasind ethnic group.

2 for each. Everyone has an option. That is a good thing! Yet all the fuss/fighting continues.

"We should get them", "We deserve X because the other group got Y, this and that" and it reduces a CHARACTER to that, and it's just not cool. Some are not even interested in these characters, per se (namely Viv & Blackwall, remaining). It's become something else. And it's kinda nasty. Yes, so they're fictional characters. But there's been a certain disrespect, I think. How's that for "romance", or, "love interest"? Honestly.

Le damn entitlement... *sighs*

:) I blame giving little kids a trophy or sparkly star  just for participating in something, everyone should be treated the same.  Life isn't fair.  If it were I could play Witcher and every other game out there as a female.    And I agree BW actually did a good job of balancing out the number of romances.

Whether or not I find one that fits my personality, not real concerned about that, it will be fun seeing what each one is like.

Have we heard anything concrete from the devs regarding whether the Chasind are supposed to be black rather than brown?

I don't know one way or the other myself, but I find the tendency for some posters (not necessarily yourself) to label every non-pale character "black" to be just as issue-ridden as anything else since it prioritizes black representation over brown representation (which TBH, I've always thought an Edmonton-based bunch of writers would be more aware of).

I'm still thrilled at the prospect of finally having a CC that will let me make characters with different skin tones and features that will look like characters of different ethnic backgrounds and not just ... weird. It was so hard to do them with anything approaching any degree of realism with the last engine. This one will be awesome! So if they don't take advantage of it and add some variety to the random NPCs I'll be disappointed.

Its not really about 'they got this many and we got that many' or anything like that (for me anyway). Like I say, Mass Effect 2 had no gay options and it didn't particularly bother me. I'm not of the mindset that says 'You've included this many gay characters, so now you must always include at *least^ that many!) I don't want any aspect of their writing to be about filling quotas and the like.

My point is that it would nice to have a gay/lesbian romance that wasn't 'you and the outsider' for once. It always seems like the gay options are those on the fringes, those who are not really a part of society in the way that others are, not part of the main framework of the story/city/whatever. It frequently comes up in such romances that the partner will say something like 'You're taking a risk being with me' usually for some other reason than their sexuality, but as a clear metaphor for that (Merrill worries about Hawke being seen with an elf, Anders about his apostate sratus, Isabela feels she isn't good enough or respectable enough, Leliana worries she's just a closet sadistic murderer etc etc).

And again, its not like there's no examples that buck that trend - its one of the few things that ME3 managed to get right. Cortez, Traynor, Kaiden are all part of the established structure, are respected and none of them are seen as Shepard taking any kind of socially bold chance or anything etc etc. So I have faith that things are progressing along the right general track, but it was still a bit of a setback to see DA:I's lineup, and think 'Nope, still not quite over that hurdle yet'.

Maybe next time...

Some of these post are so bitter and narrow-minded I can't actually believe people are upset THIS much just by not having an opportunity to f**k or romance digital character. How does 'straight female players have more option' links directly into 'privilege', 'inequality' or whatever you want to call them?? I'm truly lost. I'm gay guy born and raised in this oppresive patriarchal shithole that is korea and I'm just happy that at least in game that I can truly be myself. I appreaciate it that developers like bioware, while not perfect, is at least trying. But some people just need to start complain and  accuse bioware of not being fair as soon as they find something they can't f**k.  Like, some of yall take this for granted. Jesus.

I wasn't going to reply to this since it would have been tangential, but I've decided against my better judgment and will briefly share my thoughts.

As a Korean guy, I'd like to point out that not all Korean individuals/households are oppressive or patriarchal. Korea could certainly improve in regards to gay and women's rights, but the whole country doesn't deserve condemnation for your experiences. That being said, there are some jerks in Korea (as in any place but that's no excuse) and I'm sorry they were jerks to you. I don't expect my opinion will mean much to you, but I do hope that you can see that not all people (in Korea or otherwise) are anti-gay jerks.

There is already a large and active thread discussing this so I am locking this down.
