I was told to definitely read Asunder, so i did. Should i get masked empire?

Also are any iconic characters from the DA video games in Masked Empire? Was pleasantly surprised while reading Asunder. :)

Sorry if another thread always asked this.

It's very informative about Orlais, it's culture, Duke Gaspard, and Empress Celene.

The downside?

Everyone in the book is an evil [censored].

The most unsympathetic cast in Dragon Age history.

There are a lot of people who I imagine will be important to DAI in TME, especially Celene and Gaspard. It's also a good book on it's own. Whether you read it or not depends on how much backstory you want, but I would recommend it.

I'm not sure I'd call them all evil, just not very likeable. I'm still struggling to finish it....about 2/3 of the way there.

He was an excellent character. I agree. Even was willing to work with an apostate too. ( i loved how Patrick Weekes wrote the hex spells).

To the OP this book is a great read. It even got my girlfriend into dragon age. Well at least the novels

I really liked it. I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I loved Gaspard's character. It was excellent and provided a lot of juicy lore to sink your teeth into. Very good cast of characters, and such a big tie in to DAI.

Everyone in the book is various shades of gray, depending on your point of view. From where they are standing, the characters feel their actions are justified. And that is how it should be.

YES. YES. AND YES.

Patrick did a great job portraying the different spells, especially the hexes and curses.

I liked it. I think Asunder was slightly better, but TME was by no means a bad book.

It gives a lot of background on the civil war, how it started, and the major players. And yeah none of the characters are exactly paragons of virtue. Though most aren't entirely Evil for the Lulz either. They're... complicated.

As for iconic characters, there is one, in a brief cameo. Otherwise it's a whole new cast.

Gaspard is that rare mixture of strategic brilliance unbridled by ego or vanity combined with being honorable and honest to a fault.

He is probably going to be the best thing for Orlais since Drakon.

Beyond that; He like me is an older soldier who gets the value of having a strong home.

Heh, I might not "technically" be a soldier anymore, but i still think like one, hence why i was sort of saddened when

I know that feeling, all to well.

I am missing bits and pieces of myself.

And the creation spells were written well too. Im actually playing a spirit, creation, entropic using Hawke in my latest dragon age 2 play through because of that character and how well written that magic was.

Even his primal magic was written well, but his work on the lesser seen spells was just AWEsome:D

They did say so. Gaspard and Celene are a given, but they said this person would be in Emprise du Lion, the Red Templar base

Briala should be a given too, considering her role in the book

Arl Howe thought he was the hero of his story.

That doesn't mean he was a shade of gray.

And you can legitimately argue for the actions of all of the characters in TME. Celene, Gaspard, Michel, and Briala all have reasoning behind their decisions that one can support. No one in the book commits any act that pushes them into complete monster territory. Arl Howe, on the other hand, never really pretends to be anything more than selfish.

Action scenes in that book are all superb. It made me very excited for DA:I's story because Patrick really did an excellent job. So yeah I'd recommend reading it if you have some spare time. It's a good read overall.

No, they are not. They just have a different opinion about what direction is best for Orlais, but they definitely use some questionable tactics to do things.

@OP: I could not put this book down. It is definitely one of the better DA novels. No one is black and white in this novel; they are all delicious shades of grey. This is a must read.
