Why did Oghren suffer so much character derailment in Awakening? (spoiler?)

I liked Oghren in awakenings 'as a character' more than 'as a person' but still part of me can't help thinking it would've been better storytelling to have Mhairi, the obvious red shirt, survive the joining and have Oghren croak instead.

Interesting, but I don't know about bringing a character back from a previous game just to kill them off right away.

What happens to him if you don't make him a Warden?  Does he go off to join Alistair's army?

I would have loved that.

Mhairi is a character that is very flat but a lot of people seem to have attached themselves to her.

Mhairi is a character that is very flat but a lot of people seem to have attached themselves to her.

It's probably the same phenomenon you see in the Inquisition forums.  We know next-to-nothing about two-thirds of the characters in Inquisition, but there are hundreds of pages about them dissecting their personalities, and expressing adoration for each of them.  As blank slates, they can be anything the player wants to be, and the danger of releasing their names and faces so early is that by the time the game is out their fans have a fully-fledged personality made for them built by projected desires.

And whenever the final result doesn't match the image in the player's head, the result is a weird sense of betrayal.

Same for Awakening, but then Mhairi featured large in the promotion, and got killed off at the end of the intro.  Having had the good sense to die, she remains a blank slate, and is still the character everyone wanted her to be. :)

That, and Alix Wilton Regan is an awesome voice actress.

Being a Female Tank was something new, too, of course.

Also, she did seem to be the sanest person in the group before Nathaniel Howe.

And a bunch of people executed him.

I liked her enthusiasm, her look, her personality, and of course Alix Wilton Regan. I would've even romanced her, if Awakening had such a thing.

To speak in terms since Oghren is an alcoholic, Awakening is his relapse.

I think you mean "red shirt".  :P

Bioware's great tradition of offing one of the first party members. With ME3 being the exception as Ashley/Kaidan survived the hit.

don't remind me that...

And that wasn't a clue she was going to die?

I actually think it fits why his approval meter goes back to 50 even if it was a 100.

Alcoholics have deep deep mood swings.

Often times turning against those that care about them the most.

Oghren in Origins: grumpy, negative, douche.

Oghren in Awakening: happy, easy going, enthusiast.

I know Oghren was in a good mood after slaying the Arch Demon but this was simply too much of a character change. He's like a completely different person in Awakening.

That looks backwards to me.
