Lost all interest in DA games after Origins and haven't been following Inquisition at all but I see there's a tacical view and even though it's obviously very consolised it made me think that there might be some things in this I could enjoy.

I don't care about gay or straight romances, cinematics or lore or crap. Good tactical combat, full party control and customisation and proper RPG mechanics are what I care about. Does Inquisition have these or has BioWare abandoned oldschool grognards like me?

Good tactical combat:  Who knows?  Presumably Bioware think so.

Full party control:  Yep

Customisation:  Quite a lot

proper RPG mechanics:  Please define this more clearly

  • You don't have to romance, if you don't flirt you will be pretty much oblivious to it.
  • The cutscenes are in-game and I imagine of similar quantity to DA Origins
  • I have high hopes for the tactical combat and there is plenty of customisation.
  • Like Wulfram I'm curious to understand what 'proper RPG mechanics' means to you...

Start with itemisation: Every party member needs to have 2 ring slots, amulet, pauldrons, cuirass etc which I can put cool and unique loot in to make them effective in the roles they serve.

Level ups are meaningful and let you customise the growth of the characters from a wide variety of options.

Choices and consequnces; can my party make decisions that have real effects on the people and world in the game? For instance if I'm a cruel bastard will this be reflected?

Is the encounter design thoughtful and challenging?

I see David Gaider is still writing DA stuff, I honestly hope he has had some gameplay input because Ascension is pretty much the perfect example of good RPG design imho.

Much more than in Baldurs Gate 2 I suspect.

From what Bioware has said and shown so far, yes what you are asking for will be there.
You want a more in depth answer, I don't think any of us can give you that until the actual game releases.

Also what's Ascension? Isn't that a Mass Effect novel?

Equipment slots wise there is

Weapon

Off hand

Armour

Rings (*2)

Belt

Amulet

Boots and Gloves are there but are part of crafting apparently.  I have no idea why

There's also extensive crafting

Also what's Ascension? Isn't that a Mass Effect novel?

Mod for BG2, made by Mr Gaider

Sounds like Divinity: Original Sin and maybe the forthcoming Pillars of Eternity would match your requirements better than DAI.

It will probably annoy you less than it will annoy me, and I'm still planning to play it.

There isn't full party customisation. Each class only gets 2 "weapon styles" to chose from. Very limiting.

Stats don't work the same way as they do in the BG series, either.

True. Different rulesystem. But I think they work the same as in DA:O?

The Ascension Mod was a huge mod for BG2:Throne of Bhaal , written by David Gaider   http://weidu.org/asc...nsion-WeiDU.txt  basically it improved pretty much every aspect of the games ending.

And the recently announced Icewind Dale Enhanced Edition.

Who is doing that? EDIT: And Google says Beamdog \0/

You can only have 8 abilities per character and you can't change them during combat. I think that limits alot of strategies but it's subjective as people will defend it to death simply because they believe it's Bioware. But we all have to wait to see when the final game release to really judge it.

I loved both baldurs gates but you are talking about completely different rule sets, engines, and party builds. Baldurs gate dealt with many base classes, a party of six, and the infinity engine. So it was always tactical cam because you couldn't zoom in. DA series has 3 base classes, party of 4, and new game is on frostbite.

I mean it has a inventory and you can take certain characters and design them to different roles. This is not DAO tho, it has elements of DA2 combat and DAO tactics mixed. As others mentioned if you want older style pillars or other remakes are probably more up your alley. You want to try something new with some DAO elements sure DAI will be fun.

I'd be surprised. DAO and DA2 had very different stat systems. We have no reason to expect them to revert to DAO's.

David Gaider did Ascension?!

Oh... wow. Never knew about it. I rarely use mods in games, but Ascension and Tactics were mods that rediscovered BG2 for me, bringing it back from my childhood.

That final battle in Ascension... dear god it was hard. I mean, for those of you who think that DA2 Nightmare is hard... Well, don't try this mod :D

He'd better release patch for BG2: EE first. This game still has some annoying bugs last time I checked.

I've never actually finished original Icewind Dale. I remeber it being too hard for me as a kid, and I never had time to properly return to it somehow.

If you didn't like Dragon Age Origins I doubt this game will be for you.

I didn't like BG:EE at all. I'd much rather play the vanilla game.

One can only hope. I mean, how does one define proper RPG mechanics?  That's a new one and I have been playing these fine games since the mid 1990s.

In all seriousness, you have what you care about so you should be happy in some respect, but will it be like it was sixteen years ago, I doubt it.
