Any other assumptions you wish to pass?

Is pretty surprising how some people are still stuck in 1998 with their preferences for RPG's, Fallout 2 was better then BG anyway IMO

Hey, Fallout 2 was also a fine game!

So was Planescape: Torment, for that matter.

See, I don't any problem with people like you who have a diversified taste in games. I have a problem with people who claim one game is the best and all other games made by that Dev need to be so similar the its almost the same game.

Has to do with the Devs calling it a spiritual successor to the BG games etc.

I'd like to see them copy the best features from those games and reuse them. Like NWN's UI, and combat animations.

Has Bioware even pushed that line since they marketed DA:O? If not, I think it's a bit late in the game to be bringing up some vague marketing strategy from 4 years ago.

Of course, spiritual successor can also mean about a million different things depending on what people enjoyed about BG.

No clue. Just saying that it is probably where the comparison started.

In my opinion the gameplay in baldurs gate isnt my favorite, i prefer the 3d person view.

But the storytelling in baldurs gate was brilliant, but i think that the gameplay gave the producers more time to perfect the storyline.

In DAI the gameplay is quite substantial, and it is a balance here to consider between story and gameplay experience.

The story will be good but maybe not as griping as baldurs

It's a ridiculous and absolute statment to say that Pillars of Eternity and Tides of Numenera will be Baldur's Gate-like games?

Oh, that part of the post I agree with.... depending on what we think it means for a game to be BG-like. What does that mean to you?

NPCs with personality, depth, and their own agendas.  Who interact with you, your companions, and the environment.

Long, epic story

Large world to explore, full of things to discover.

The ability to choose how to solve a given quest.  Ideally with varying outcomes

The ability to role-play my own character.

for gameplay:

Party based combat

Pause-and-play capability

Isometric view

Some of these are more important than others.  But when I think "BG-like", this is what comes to mind.

I really should play that game because every one of those elements appeals to me.

If so, I recommend avoiding BG1 regarding things listed before the "gameplay" segment, assuming you're more interested  in the narrative elements. If you are a fan of traditional DnD gameplay, it may suit you fine.

Dang, look at everyone talking and praising Baldur's gate in this thread and I'm still stuck at the friendly inn because everything keeps killing me in 1 hit!

It's pretty surprising how some people are stuck in 1905 with their preferences for excessive cinematics, dialogue, and TV-show like games.

Spot on. Allthough the NPC's don't have much depth in BG1, to be fair.

Hmm... did we really have a lot of choices for how to solve BG quests? And I don't have a good handle on the criteria for role-playing your own character.

Most of the rest of your criteria like they're typical of Bio games in general, the explore thing being the exception. But that's apparently coming back in DAI. So I guess DAI will be like BG.

Edit: whoops! Iso view's an exception too, since Bio did skip that in KotOR and ME.

Not a bad parody of the last post, but why "1905"?

No, but they certainly had their own agendas. Potential companions might choose to attack you, rather than join your party, or decide to leave if they didn't like how you were handling certain things. None of what we saw in DA2 where they join up and refuse to leave even when it doesn't make sense.

This is true.  And it was an element BG2 greatly improved upon.

Well, getting to Spellhold in BG2 could involve two completely different quest lines, depending on who you sided with.

Then there's Anomen's personal quest.

Then there's the silver dragon eggs deal in the Underdark.

In BG1 there's the whole Dynaheir thing, kill or rescue her?

Captain Brage, kill him for the bounty or bring him alive to the temple.

Then there's the whole Aldeth vs the druids thing in Cloakwood.

No these things don't change the story in general, but it's a lot more freedom to shape your game's experience

Certain companions will even attack each other.

Important safety tip:  drow priestesses and paladins don't get along.
