I can't imagine how they could be connected.

There is no connection. The extra romances were done because Bioware was given more time. The 9 companions were decided upon long before the additional romances were written.
And I don't care. I hate this PC nonsense about balancing the crap out of everything. If Bioware had more good ideas for 6 fantastic male characters and only 3 female, I applaud them for it. I'd rather they stick to their own vision.

I'm not so much a critic of the disparity so much as I am a critic of the reasoning behind it. If BioWare just gave more options to straight females because...."eh, seemed like a good idea at the time", then fine, I'm cool with that. But from what Allan Schumacher said in the Mike Laidlaw thread, it almost feels like BioWare specfically did this to get back at the Straight White Man. Which is just beyond ridiculous. That's the vibe I'm getting anyway. If that isn't the reason why they did it, then feel free to disregard this entire post. But I'm cautious all the same.

I still wish there were more females and non humans in the main cast of the game.
Maybe if there were more to choose from they could've chosen a female as one of the "extra" romances.

I'd suggest you go watch David Gaiders presentation at the 2013 GDC conference. Same applies to anyone who liked your post.
Suffice to say, it's not about getting back at the straight white male gamer.

SJWs ARE a problem in the industry but I honestly see nothing wrong with what Bioware has done. They created a set of characters and said characters have said sexualities that fit their character.
Big deal.

If overly critical crowds lashed out at me with unsubstantiated criticism over a supposed exclusionary or preferential social agenda I do not think I would be as forgiving of ignorance as Bioware is.
The only issues here are the ones you've assigned yourself.

Please... no... it's a 48 minute presentation, with good points all the way :-|
Edit : REDACTED
I am only doing Gaider a phenomenal disservice by trying to sum it up, so I won't.

Meh, don't see the point of giving the same group 2 extra options with the extra time. Could have given one option for other group so more people would be happy.

They could have used the time to remove Iron Bull's racegate, instead of having to wait until one of the developers put in extra work.
If he hadn't...you could have gay dwarves have ONE option, while straight female elves have four.

The romances have never been that important to me ( I know I'm in the minority ) but I know a lot of people seem to be upset. I always play Bioware games with urgency, the world needs saving there will be time for loving when the job is done lol. The thing with romances is not everyone will be happy with the choices, I just hope those people can still enjoy the game.

First off, I am not in any way upset with what was done. If you look at the realities of medieval style worlds, it makes sense that the majority of a group of martial characters are going to wind up being male. As much as we like to try to deny it, men and women are different and men do fulfill that physical role and little easier than women do, so it's just logical.
Then, when you give the players their sexual orientations they are going to fall out how they fall out. I agreed with the above post only because I do think that the game should be the game, the characters should be the characters, and as much as possible, social platforms should be left out. That doesn't mean I want people left out, but it does mean that when you go too far to cater to the great god equality, you start to infringe on the principles of good storytelling by laying down "rules" that must not be violated in order to appease everyone else, and when you have too many groups you are trying to appease, there is no room to simply write the characters or the story and they become bland and tasteless and people will begin to wonder what happened to the great storytelling BioWare used to be known for ... back when they told the tales they wanted to tell instead of trying to tell the tales we all thought we wanted them to tell.
