I'm a white female living in a world that favors whites and not females.  I'm straight, mostly, and I was raised in a home that knew what privilege was, even if we never experienced it ourselves, and that makes me favored almost everywhere, if only as an adjunct.  I can't really appreciate the obstacles a black, lesbian, female gamer faces.  I really don't want to try.  It's hard enough only having one strike out of 3.  I can't tell you how many times I've tried to stand up on my soapbox and just...been switched off.  Because I'm female.  By my family.  Because that's not how we do things.  If no one with any say speaks up, things won't get better, they'll stay the same.  I'm happy with baby steps, but I'm happy they're happening.  The first suffragettes were supported by their husbands, because their husbands respected them and knew what they could do if they were given a voice people would listen to.  It's 100 years later and we're still having the same argument, but things are a little better.  It's not enough, but it won't ever be enough to make up for what's been done in the past.  We have to move on or go crazy.  Here's a game we can play and get outside ourselves for a little while, and it's including options we've not had before.  That is a good thing.  Let's not wreck it by being angry about what we can't change.

Getting off the soapbox now.

I said it in the other thread but I'll say it again, I think Bioware have made over all the right choices, they have ensured everyone has the same base minimum choice of two and after that gone where the stories took them. That I think is all you can ever ask, and maybe this time round one group got a edge, next time round someone else may well get it, and that's cool, as long as everyone has something.

I think we could've used one more female but eh. What can you do. It's done.

If you honestly don't think that "social agendas" have been present in video games since their conception, then you are either way more clueless or way more sheltered than is probably good for an adult.

Video games are a form of entertainment, but as a medium, they have been a vehicle for social commentary for forty years.  If you are just noticing now, perhaps you should put down the controller and pick up a book.

One of the best posts I've seen today!

All I expect are at least two options who are reasonably different from one another, so that the LI choice matters. Anything more than two choices is great but not expected.

For those that are unhappy about the lack of choices...did you complain about DA:O only having Leliana and Morrigan as potential LIs for a straight male PC? What about DA2 where the two choices were Isabela or Merrill?

That's not the point. It isn't the amount of choices that is the problem; it is the fact that the choices are diverse enough for others to have choices too. That's the real travesty here.

If the implication is that more men were added just to be romance options for straight females, that's actually worse than it being a coincidence. Since the two extra options were added after they'd already decided how many males there would be, though, I don't think that was the case. The two things aren't really connected, besides that the excess of males to begin with led to more romances for male characters being written. There's no real reason it should change anyone's original opinion of the issue.

The only thing I'm bummed about is the fact that Sera isn't bi and Viv isn't even a romance option, however these are petty issues and overall I think Bioware has done a fantastic job balancing out the romance options.

Had people been complaining that the game was a sausagefest?

Quite a few were very angry when we first learned who all the companions were, but it had died back quite a bit since.

My first thought when I found out it was Blackwall was...

"OH THANK GOD ITS THE SILVER FOX HOTTIE BRING IT NOMNOM"

Err, uhhh... yah, but I was surprised it wasn't Vivienne. I remember reading how the decisions for the romances would only happen if the writer felt like it was a thing the character would go for. That's kind of telling about the rest of the characters, like Vivienne...

AKA: Vivienne ain't interested in being your waifu, bro.

I was unhappy with the female companions being outnumbered 2-to-1 from the beginning.  Lots of guys on these forums told me it wasn't a big deal.  But now that the lack of female companions has made for fewer straight male romances than straight female ones, suddenly guys are talking about the gender imbalance too. I'm pretty uncomfortable with this, to be honest.  :?

There is no connection. The extra romances were done because Bioware was given more time. The 9 companions were decided upon long before the additional romances were written.

There is a connection. They're only doing companion and advisor romances.

If there were fewer male companions, there'd be fewer male love interests.

More men, fewer women, and no romances at all would be my preference.  It's war, after all.

Pretty sure the series has established since the character creation screen for genders in Origins that men and women are treated equally in all aspects throughout Thedas. Why would there need to be less women taking part in the war?

But you certainly can't blame Vivienne and Varic for having better things to do XD

I'm confused now, is it politically correct? It looks like there is no equality... :(

I just love the amount of fuss over how there are 2 more LIs for heterosexual female inquisitors when hardly anything was said about how heterosexual male shepards had 5 more options in ME.

As a femshep player, this was annoying as balls. The romance options were less interesting as well. Thank the universe for Samantha Traynor.

Mostly the hilarious disparity in results that would occur if my girlfriend and I were each given a shield and told to push the other back across a given line.
