Is there anyone you'll intentionally keep out of the party?

I don't think so.

Sera is the only one who's left a bad impression on me at this point, but not so bad, that I'm not giving her a chance.

Going to recruit everyone I can find and see if I like them or not.

As of now I've planned rotating my party members. I'll see if I can do that, or if end up testing them all and sticking to one group combination afterwards.

Thats really hard to say knowing so little at this point. But so far Cole is not doing anything for me and although I am a HUGE fan of Varric I probably won't use him too much because I used him a lot in DA2. And if Cass is too "preachy" I'm not sure about her either.

Vivenne, I think. Lady, you are not stepping out of Skyhold in this outfit. And most certainly not in this hat. We have one Bull already.

Maybe, Cole. I'm not sure I'll find him agreeable. I like Varric and Sera more and I usually take two warriors or two mages, but rarely two rogues.

Depends of first impression. For example if my inquisitor will meet Vivienne and she will act "all high and mighty"  or tries to manipulate inquisitor, mock other group members and so on I wont recruit her, unless there will be option to kill her later.

Theres plenty of the companions that have already left a bad impression on me, Perhaps that will change as I will get to know them but as it is:
Cole, I didn't like him in Asunder and found him to just be generally boring and irritating.

Blackwall, I find him to be naive and foolish when he was complaining about Loghains actions, his first words made it clear to me That he is an idealist naive fool "We Wardens are Orlesian by address only"...Yeah thats a load of crap, otherwise why is it I only got sent 12 wardens by your Warden-Commander in Awakening despite him wanting to send more but the Empress wouldn't let him? Not to mention the Wardens receive more tithes in Orlais than anywhere else in thedas, and they're the ones who helped spread the Orlesian chantry to the north.

Sera: I really don't like the whole idealist paragon goody goody thing, She really rubs me the wrong way and is clearly another blind idealist.

Cassandra: I didn't like her in DA2, her whole romanticizing about my Hawke and for some really stupid reason thinking he can stop the Mage-Templar war because...reasons? Makes it clear she isn't very bright and is very irrational.

So Blackwall, Sera, Cass and Cole I most likely will ignore or tell to leave my party, or at the very least will put up with but really won't like.
Though I get the feeling that may change in regards to Cole, but atm I don't like him.

Varric.

Yep.  Got my fill of him in one game already.  I doubt I'll be able to avoid recruiting him at all (I can always hope), but with any luck, there won't be any quests where he (or any of the other party members, really) is mandatory.

Everyone else is a brand new companion, though, so they'll all get a turn on quests in the first playthrough.

Cassandra is getting benched because of what she did to my boy, Varric in the last game.

Dorian because his handlebar mustache.

Iron Bull because he sounds like an idiot. "How many pieces have you cut a.man into? Im up to three, but I have some ideas." That sounds like something a ten year old would make his Wolverine acrion figure say.

Opinions could change if they happen to be really cool in the game.

I have my main party decided, but I'll still mix them around if appropriate. There's no one I just won't use, I don't think I'll use Solas or Dorian unless it's a main and personal mission for them as they might not agree with my pro-circle attitude.

Maybe Cole... not sure yet. Have only read a brief summary of Asunder, but he doesn't really appeal to me. Not saying I won't give him a chance in DA:I.

I won't be using the rogues that much, as my PC will be filling that role, but I don't plan on ignoring anyone completely.

EDIT: Uh, that was old post to reply, sorry!

To get back on the question, maybe Blackwall. He just seems boring. I dislike Grey Wardens and nothing else about him is intresting to me so far. I will try to take him with me couple times though.

Sera and Iron Bull haven't buzzed me yet, but that could easily change when I play the game.

It's too early to tell, but I will probably still take them all somewhere...eventually..especially if I think I'm going somewhere that pertains to them.  I'll probably develop a favourite group of people, but I like to give most of them a try, I like drama so I can sometimes enjoy poking them and watching them react.   ;)

The only reason a companion is left behind is when their skills are too close to my character's. It's never due to personality. I enjoy the party banter too much to exclude companions.

Nope, they all get to join, but it will be interesting to see how long they'll stay depending on what character I'm RPing in that particular playthrough.

No, I just love what I'm hearing about our companions so far.

I'm having trouble deciding who I'm taking with me, though I'm sure I'll have a clearer image once I meet them in-game.

B-But if I have Vivienne, Dorian and Iron Bull I can't have Cassandra and Blackwall and Cole and then I can't have Varric Sera and Solas D:

It's unlikely I'll keep anyone out of the party because I don't like them. In general, I enjoy characters I find compelling and interesting over those I might want to be friends with in real life, so that generally doesn't exclude anyone. Really, in the Dragon Age series, the only character I've actively avoided using due to personality is Wynne, simply because I find her boring compared to the rest of the cast.

That said, I usually end up with some benchwarmers due to redundancy and class stacking...

No. I like to use different party setups, for story reasons and also to add some variation to the gameplay.

Everyone seems to detest him, I hope the character surprises people and interests them.

I'm not going to leave anyone out. I'm sure I'll recruit and get along with all of them, depending on how I roleplay each individual Inquisitor.

I don't plan to leave Cole out, I think he's really interesting.

From Asunder, clearly somewhat broken and unclear about himself but seems to mean well.

In previous DAs we've (mostly) been quite happy to hang out with:

  • Failed assassins,
  • Concealed Bards
  • Qunari murderers
  • Blood Mage / abominations & apostates
  • Betraying thieves
  • Unshackled golems

In comparison Cole seems like a nice boy...

Not in the DA games at least.  Miranda from ME2 did end up on Team ME Benchwarmer due to her personality the first time around, but she has come into my party on subsequent replays of the game.  Most of the time though, I end up just getting comfortable with one-two party set up and rarely changing it throughout the course of the game.   The party members left out are generally on accident, or because they didn't quite fit the makeup I wanted at the time.

So far, none of the personalities of the companions have turned me off enough to intentionally bench them.  Even Vivienne, who I see as the most caustic of the party, at least seems interesting.  If I was the type to write off companions before I got to know them in game, you can bet your bippy that I would have run Morrigan off as soon as possible.  I'm really glad I didn't, because her friendship arc is my favorite for the DA games.  It used to be #1 in all BioWare games, until I played the Mass Effect games and got to know Tali.*

*Throughout the Mass Effect trilogy, there is two companions that will return for all of the games: Tali and Garrus.  Garrus is awesome, but Tali is my favorite friendship between a female PC and a female companion.  Sorry Morrigan.
