Duplicate characters in matches

We know that in the press multiplayer playthroughs that multiple people in each party were able to select the same character (example I read was 3 Legionnaires). This doesn't quite fit with how they're trying to integrate the MP and SP lore...characters all have names, backstories, etc. So seems strange to have characters duplicated.

I'm not saying it'd be a good idea to prohibit duplicates, like in MOBAs, but I'll probably switch up my own character if possible to avoid being a clone. Not just because of the lore, but it also sounds more interesting tactics-wise.

What about you guys...would having clones in a match bug you, or is it just me? :P

Not going to bug me, besides, you'll be able to customize armor and such forth, and I heard something about skins and such, I hope you can customize the actual person a little, so I doubt there will be exact clones, though honestly, I'm the person that would switch things up just to balance out the party. There should be 2 attackers and 2 supports, whether its my fave composition of Tank, dps rogue, archer and mage, or two tanks and two archers or other combinations...

I actually really want the characters to get locked to 1 player. For one it would bug the **** out of me and probably make me instaleave. And 2, it doesn't make much sense to allow 3 or 4 of one class cause your just gonna get your ass kicked. Especially with randoms. Alright my rants over.

I'm the same.  With them being actual characters it'll bother me so I'll switch if someone else is using the same character.  I wouldn't have had an issue with locking characters that have already been selected like in AC, but I'll work with what I've got.

On the plus side groups are definitely going to be encouraged to have one of each class for maximum benefit.  Whether I'll go out of my way to leave and rejoin parties depends on how well matchmaking works, heh.

I'm personally against locking of chars, it can create an attitude like in shooters, I want the sniper rifle, I'll teamkill to get it. And I doubt the game will be impossible if you don't have a balanced party, honestly, there were times in mass effect where a team of all the same chars or class could do very well, just depends on skill level, but having a balanced team will certainly help, I do hope there is eventually a healer class if there isn't one already, I know bioware has been talking about limiting healing and such quite a bit as a way to encourage more tactical play, though that was mostly focused on single player talk.

Normally I will swap class if someone in the lobby already has a character I had arrived with.

I can see set circumstances. objectives and/or achievements that might require a same-class team.

I understand there is some banter that comments on multiple versions...

4 headbutting krogans were a highlight of ME3 MP. I hope we could see something like that again in damp.

Well I am very curious as to what the Necromancer class abilities entail.

If she is DAMP's resident pet class, I can imagine the shenanigans that would follow a full party of Necros; with zombie minions in tow; while they try and escort the Inquisition informant.

On the fifth day of multiplayer, my true love gave to me...

5 map stages
4 reaving reavers
3 difficulties
2 health potions
and a treasure chest at the end~

Alright, we need a 12 days of DAMP Song.

On the first day of Damp, Bioware did give to me An Alchemist in an Iron mine!

This time we will be playing as certain characters so indeed it's going to look weird having more than one from each. If it's not the case, I won't be bothered by it much, but would've preferred if this limitation was present. Besides, proper parties are probably going to need one from each of the classes (with 4th being from any class but perhaps focused more on supporting role).

I agree with the op, adding the history and back story of the characters is good but having duplicates will be funky.  I'll get over it but it will seem strange.

(If I see Maria in a lobby I'm going to become a Reaver before she can choose her class!)

An interesting paragraph from this article:

http://www.joystiq.c...-effect-3-lega/

"Once you've picked your character, the matchmaking system will aim to create a balanced party for the selected adventure, but should a group double-up on a particular character, you'll be able to experience some fun Easter eggs. For example, if a group has two of the Elementalist in their party, the doppelgangers won't ignore one another and will instead compliment each other's good looks."

Excellent pick up RedLens, glad to see that and the matching system sounds interesting as well.  I am sure they will have to tweak a few things as time goes on.

I have a bad feeling about this. I remember how biower changed the matchmaking system of ME3 MP that prioritized N7 level of players. It was a complete disaster.

I'll remain optimistic that they've learned a few things since then.

Nice catch, RedLens. Glad to see they're at least trying to mitigate the issue...safest thing they can do, probably.

Side note, though...I guess that confirms banter in MP parties. Hopefully there's enough variety and it's used sparingly, otherwise I can imagine repeated banter becoming annoying quite quickly.

The banter among party members does make me curious as to how the dialogue will be handled for DLC characters.

I mean is BioWare going to go back to all of the voice actors/actresses for each of the vanilla DAMP classes and have them each add in new lines for each and every DLC kit that is added to the roster? If so I can see the number of quips, and back and forth between characters is going to rapidly increase.

Not that I think that such interconnectivity is a bad thing; I just don't want to see unique DLC characters limited because of the dialogue, and/or for each DLC item to be over 2 gigabytes in size with over half of that being new recorded dialogue.

Not going to bug me one bit. There are really two kinds of MP matches in my mind. The thought out and methodical MP session with friends or "guild like players" where you are playing on a challenge or some such. Then there are just those odd pick up games where you are just playing. I imagine that as time goes on, people comfort with the game will be such that everyone is just willing to play whatever.

At start, there are only 4 classes available. With 4 team members, the random odds of getting a perfectly balanced party without any duplicate characters is about 10%. Which means that, with random group selection, you will have a party of unique characters every ten games. And that's only if there is a perfect balance in player distribution, otherwise, it's even worse.

So yeah, get used to not being so unique!

It doesn't really bother me, tbh.  I'm probably going to play each character at least once so that I can get a feel for their corresponding playstyles.  If I need to switch to another character to balance out the group, fine by me, but otherwise, I'm sticking with the Assassin until other dual-wield rogue characters are available.   ;)
