Discovered an exploit that lets dual wielders attack really, really fast

I'm pretty sure we've all been through this game but just as a courtesy, boss spoiler!

I explain the mechanics in the video description, but I'll summarize here.

Using poisons or coatings seems to reset your swing animation. Most of the time, it's not desirable. However, dual striking seems to deliver the actual attack very early in the animation. Meaning every time you use a poison, you attack almost immediately.

Not immediately, but almost. You're basically skipping most of the attack animation, but you still have to wait through a small part of it. So what you can squeeze out of this exploit is proportional to your attack speed without it. I didn't play perfectly here. I was doing ~3 attacks a second when my normal speed is 2 a second. I can do about 6 swings a second if I paused between poisons, so you can triple your max attack speed if this exploit pushed to the absolute limit. Careful not get too greedy, or you'll interrupt the animation before the hit.

Now if you also want to get the most out of your poisons' on-hit damage, note that the order in which you apply your poisons can actually matter. They do stack, as you may know, but they don't all stack. See the description of the 4th video in the playlist for more info, if interested.

I don't mean to burst your bubble but the attack animation interrupt (topic on this board...) exploit is a lot faster and doesn't require the use of poison or pausing the game.

Oh wow. Not bubble bursting at all; this is awesome. Small correction, though: my method doesn't require pausing; pausing just reduces human error and makes execution easier - you can swing 8 or 9 times a second, which is pretty much impossible without pausing.

I don't see why you'd say the other video is a lot faster, though; he seems to pull off 3 swings a second like me. Moreover, his method has limitations of its own, such as not working well against non-humanoids, on sloped terrain or when you're slowed. Additionally, while the timing isn't hard, hitting it correctly every time is nontrivial, if not impossible due to pathing quirks.

Still, really nice to not have to use poisons! Gonna have fun playing with this.

You can also do something else mid-turn, like activating a sustained ability (I do it all the time when I forget to activate mage ones, like frost weapons) or pickpocketing mid-combat.  You still get the auto-attack, but are doing something else as well.

Wow, I tried this last night, but did not have dual-striking on.. with each poison, my rogue elf went crazy stabbing all the Tevinter's in the hospice.

Satisfying, isn't it? I suspect you had a dagger in the main hand. Seems like the poison method works much better with a dagger in the main hand, and the moving method from the other thread works better with a sword in the main hand. Very interesting...

Also, PICKPOCKETING MID COMBAT OMFG - this is definitely the best way to do it if it works like I think it does!

Edit: Aww, I forgot it had a cooldown. =(

Is it possible on consoles?

It does. You'll have to open up the wheel for every poison, I think. The other method might be preferred if you want something less cumbersome:

He's just moving forward slightly to interrupt the animation. I'll note that in my experience, this way works better with a sword.

Haven't been playing for a long while (died and got tired (no reloads))...

I always thought this was more helpful against more than 1 mob since you can dispatch them a lot faster...

This becomes less useful or necessary when you have momentum and can wield a dagger in your main hand and large weapon in your off hand since dual wield speed only uses your main hand to determine swing animation and with momentum with the speed potion thing, it's so fast already that this is really not needed.

The main use/benefits is that at the very very low levels (like lvl 1 as can be seen in the proving fights)...it's pretty powerful compared to just swinging and you have very limited talents at that time.

Game gets too easy at the higher levels as well so less needed.
