9. LoZ: OoT
8. Kingdom Hearts (call it cheesy and weird...cause it is...but its still one of the best rpgs to ever come from Square Enix.)
7. WoW (been playing for 5 years...if you think the challenge is gone then you haven't done heroic mode 25 mans yet)
6. Hitman: Blood Money
5. SW: Jedi Academy
4. Call of Duty 1 (the best CoD of all time)
3. SW: KOTOR
2. Metal Gear Solid 4 (I still have a hard time considering this a 'game'. more like a 60 hour movie)
1. Mass Effect (My absolute favorite game of all time. I've played it more than any other game, can still play it today and not get tired of it. The whole game was awesome, but it was the last 2 hours especially that made it how epic it is. I'm hoping Mass Effect 2 will either be replacing this as #1 or pushing MGS4 down a level ;D)
as mentioned by an earlier poster, I too am someone embaressed to even mention this following game...but it does indeed earn a spot as an honorable mention.
Honorable Mentions -
1. Pokemon Red/Blue
2. Dragon Age: Origins

1.) Mass Effect - If it was a bit longer, this would be the most hours I've spent playing a game, judging by the amount of playthroughs. Still, I keep coming back, the story and the universe draw me in.
2.) Super Mario Bros. 3 - Still bust this one out as well from time to time, and I was introduced to it when I was FIVE. There is something timeless about Mario as far as I'm concerned.
3.) Knights of the Old Republic - This is the game that made me aware there were RPG's that were actual RPG's in the game world and not scripted events strung together by badly voiced cutscenes (a la JRPG's). Thank you, Bioware. You changed my life.
4.) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - First game I ever beat completely, I was nine. It was hard for me, but I did it, because it was worth it. Masterpiece.
5.) Shenmue - Played this for many hours on the Dreamcast back in the day. Wonderful game, if boring at times. Something similar has not really been attempted since.
6.) Civilization 4 - The best of the Civ series IMO, though some purists disagree. This is the ultimate in Turn-based Strategy games as far as I'm concerned.
7.) 007 Goldeneye - Id created the FPS, but RARE created the FPS culture on consoles. (which may or may not be a good things in retrospect). I wasted many a night with four player deathmatches.
8.) Soul Calibur - Many point to the second, but the first ate up the most hours for me. I love fighting games, despite the absurd stories, and this is the one that had me returning again and again. It was also THE game to show people when one had a Dreamcast after launch.
9.) Half-Life 2 - The last great step forward in the FPS genre. Since then, things have been pretty dull and stagnant.
10.) Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Technically, I've wasted more hours on this than anything else in my life. Seriously.

* It has the best cast of any Bioware game to date, Edwin, Jaheira, Minsc, Imoen, Viconia, Aerie, I still remember all these peeps almost a decade later.
* It has some well written romance subplot and party interactions.
* Most importantly however was Jon Irenicus. Most Bioware villains (ME, DA:O) follow JRPGs in a sense that their motives are "OMG OMG I bring end of everything (Sephiroth, Kefka, that dude in Chrono Trigger/Cross, Reapers, Dark Spawn and so on)." Jon Irenicus was a narcissist completely consumed by hatred. When the person closest too him defied and outcast him only one thing mattered, vengeance. In a way BG II was so great because it was not the player's story, it was Jon Irenicus'. Best villain ever, at least imo.
* Amazing main menu and character creation theme.
2 FF VI: First RPG I beat. Kefka was an amazing villain as doom bringer (too bad when combined with Sephiroth's "I'm a doom bringer but I have emphatic emo motives for ending everything" they both became the stereotype RPG villain/villains)
3 FF X: Heart wrenching
4 Lunar
5 Suikoden III (Great all around cast)
6 Super Mario RPG (SNES one)
7 Chrono Trigger
8 Chrono Cross (The music was amazing)
9 Mass Effect
* WoW: would be 2 and everything would be bumped 1 down but I didn't know if MMOs applied.

9. Halo - Many people bash this game because they believe it's overrated, but as far as shooters go, I really believe this is the tops. I have yet to see a single game recreate enemy AI in a shooter as well as the original Halo. Even its two sequels couldn't do it. An action packed game with a simplistic story that never takes itself too seriously. I really love this game.
Say what you will about the Halo series, even I must admit I am not a huge fan, but a lot of the modern FPS games we see today owe quite a bit to the original Halo. Halo was a great game when it was first released for the original Xbox and I feel that many of todays gamers dont give it the credit it deserves.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Troika's best game, may they be remembered for more than Temple of Elemental evil and their horrid quality assurance. I picked up Bloodlines when it released not exactly sure of what to expect. I only knew it was a Troika game with RPG qualities, and that it took place in the World of Darkness; a P&P setting I had fleeting knowledge of at best. I was pleasantly surprised. No, floored is more accurate. Here was a game that epitomized the single player RPG experience for me, and it managed to do it without things I normally hope for such as party members and romances. Bloodlines was all about choice. Certain parts of the story were naturally linear, and it became extremely linear in its last act. But most of the game gave you incredible freedom in when to tackle quests and how. You could stealth through, talk your way out of it, use nifty vampire powers or bash and blast through anything in your path. Bloodlines made me *like* playing a vampire, and aside from a handful of Whedonverse characters, I *hate* all things vampire.
Bloodlines had so much replayability and just enough changes between some of the clans that it was worth replaying multiple times. Particularly the Malkavian clan; which had some of the funniest, silliest dialogue my eyes have ever been treated to in a game. If not for a slew of bugs and major focus on combat late in the game, this would have ranked higher on my list and may have been remembered as one of the best CRPGs ever made in the mainstream community. It was still more than good enough to make my list, however.
If you really enjoyed Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines then I highly recomend you try Deus Ex (the original not IW) if you havent already. Bloodlines was a good game but I couldnt help but feel like I was playing a poor mans Deus Ex, nearly everything that you loved about Bloodlines can be found in Deus Ex.
Of course the 2 games have completely different styles with Bloodlines being based around a secret society of Vampires in a modern setting with supernatural themes and Deus Ex is set in a dystopian future with a more of a MIB, FBI conspiracy theory sort of theme with a big focus on mechanical and nanotechnical human augmentations, so I guess it comes down to personal preference.
Heres a fun fact, Deus Ex was set in 2052 and in sections of the game where the New York skyline is visible in the background you will notice that the Twin Towers (also known as the World Trade Centre) are missing, this is a huge coincidence because the game was released a year before the 9/11 attacks. Did the Devs know that the Twin Towers would be destroyed, or was it one big coincidence? Either way it doesnt bode well for the Statue of Liberty.
Deus Ex was the first game in which I felt my actions really mattered with the consequences of your actions ready to bite you somewhere along the line, whether you walked into the ladies toilets in the UNATCO offices or if you jumped out the back window at your brothers apartment and left him to fend for himself when the Majestic 12 come knocking on his door you will feel the consequences of your actions. Deus Ex is my favorite game of all time and for good reason, if you really liked bloodlines then I highly suggest you pick up Deus Ex, you wont be dissapointed.

I totally agree and this is one of the many reasons that Baldurs Gate 2 is in my top 2 (It is a damn close tie and could go either way but Deus Ex beat it by a hair for the No1 spot). So many of the villians I have seen these days are so one dementional and only want to destroy the world because they can. Jon Irenicus on the other hand, when we first start the game we know nothing about him other than the fact that he is a dangerous man and that for some reason he has taken an interest in you and your companion Imoen, but as you progress through the game and learn more about the character, his intentions and his motivations you cant help but feel a little bit sorry for him, sure the man is evil to the bone but you cant help but to feel a little bit of pity for the man.
I do have to wonder though if Bioware still has some of the writers that worked on Baldurs Gate 2. I have noticed that the quality of Bioware's stories and characters have dropped over the years, while they still do a good job of these things they are nowhere near the quality of what they were when they created Baldurs Gate 2.

8. Pokemon Red/Blue - I'm a bit ashamed to put this here but there is just something I love about Pokemon. Who says a great rpg has to have a compelling story? not me, pokemon is the proof.
Nothing to be ashamed about there, sure the Pokemon TV series was a bit dorky but the games were pretty solid. Nothing better than catching monsters, training them up then battling your friends, throw in the fact that there were 150 of the little buggers to collect and you had yourself one pretty good game. As the slogan says "Gotta Catch em All".
All in all some pretty good games lists, keep up the good work.

I missed out on Deus Ex, but I was aware of it. Back then I focused on consoles, as high end PCs were too costly. One of my friends bought a version of Deus Ex for PS2 and it seemed interesting enough. Strangely, I enjoyed Invisible War. Not that I thought it came anywhere near Bloodlines, but it was fun enough. It's one of the few bargain bin Xbox games I felt exceeded the pitiful asking price. I probably would enjoy Deus Ex as well. It's more complex gameplay wise. The downside is I already know how it ends and to be honest I kinda dislike J.C. Denton as a character. Not sure if I want to play him. Still, I may look into it if I ever clear most of my backlog of unplayed games. It's been on my radar's periphery for what seems an eternity.
Hahaha damn the sub par sequel ruined the masterpiece for you, that is a real shame because the original Deus Ex was just so good. I still recommend you play it though, you would be missing out if you diddnt.
I cant remember much of IW but in the original J.C isnt the god like entity he was in IW (he becomes that way at the end of Deus Ex depending on the ending you choose). You still may not like J.C in the original much because he is pretty emotionless (I personally loved this about his character as it channeled the emotionless FBI style agent personality perfectly) but I for one love the character.
Also if you are going to play it I would reccomend you get it on PC rather that PS2 as a few scenes have been cut and the game had to be simplified to be able to play it on PS2.

Part of the problem is I know how Deus Ex ends. From what I read, Invisible War sort of takes all of the original game's endings and tweaks them enough to bring them into the sequel. It also kind of takes away from a feeling a choice when I know J.C canonically links with Helios instead of joining the Illuminati or some such. Still, I may pick it up eventually. Maybe.
And yes, I noticed that about J.C right away watching my friend play. This video springs to mind... Link

Invisible War isn't that bad - just really disappointing in comparison to the original.
I loved playing as JC Denton, and I've never understood why I liked him so much more than Geralt. I mean, they aren't that different. I wonder if it's because the Deus Ex NPCs make fun of Denton's character design - I remember Anna Navarre ripping into JC's habit of wearing sunglasses and baggy coats indoors. He's got the accoutrements of a badass character, but the in-game reactions to him seem like the reactions of actual people who think they might be talking to a bit of an arrogant ******. And the completely emotionless exterior makes it easier to identify with him - the player doesn't have much idea what's going on in his head, so it can be made up; but despite that, he has his moments of pathos, with his brother Paul especially. Oh god, apparently I'm a JC Denton fangirl. *facepalm*

1. Xenogears - still to this day the most engrossing and deep plot of any game/movie/book i have ever enjoyed. Had a great cast of wonderful characters. Also about mechs which i love as well.
Metal Gear Solid - i list the original because as much as i loved 3 and 4, it was this classic that put me in love in the first place. Deep plot, lots of science, crazy characters/boss fights, what's not to love, not to mention probally the best character ever with Snake.
Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner - loved the fast paced combat, the story was good, characters were alright, but the real star was the mechs and again the combat.
Final Fantasy VII - the first real rpg i played and still to this day it was awesome. Loved the cast, story, gameplay(materia ftw still!). Gave us one of the true badass villians in Sephiroth
Mass Effect - love sci-fi, was epic in story, character development, and of course how fleshed out the lore was, was very well done. spent hours reading about the various tech and aliens.
Baldur's Gate II - like many others, great characters, great story, awesome character creation, and come on they had the kensai!
Suikoden II - man this was a hard choice over 3, but i loved both because of the story, depth, the interesting ways to find the 108 stars of destiny and the all the craziness that ensued
God of War - now normally i dont like action platformers but this game hooked me instantly with the combat, the awesomeness that is Kratos and the fact i am a sucker for most anything ancient myth related.
Dragon Age Origins - liked the character creation, great story, memorable cast, deep lore and decent combat.
Valkyrie Profile - incredible combat, great story line, lots of deep characters and just lots of fun.
honorable mention because they are also so damned good
Silent Hill, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy X, Parasite Eve, Ico/Shadow of the Colossus, Skies of Arcadia, Neverwinter Nights 2, Resident Evil 2, and lastly Dead Space.

They're completely different, I personally don't see a connection. A poor man's Deus Ex is probably not the right evaluation IMO. I had tons of fun with Bloodlines and took interest with it's WOD lore and awesome story whereas I was completely disappointed with Deus Ex afer hearing so much hype about it. The clunky and akward gameplay just killed my enjoyment to be honest(which is a pity because it set out such a great cyberpunk setting and story). Strangely enough I too enjoyed the sequel IW(which I can see so many DX fans constanly put down).
