So how much impact will gear and character stats have?

I hope that the main determinating factor for success is skill and teamwork and not gear. The fun part about ME3's MP is that you can play any class and still be successful even if you don't have the ultra-rare weapons. All the builds are viable without necessitating some heavy grinding. You don't feel crippled when you switch classes or builds that you might not have the optimal gear for. With the way that gear is upgraded and the fact that the character gains additional stats once he is releveled, DA's MP seem to promote to sticking with just 1 class. That kinda sucks.

It will be a factor no question about it.  Very good or very experienced players will do well with lesser weapons however it will be tougher with low level lesser weapons just as it would if a person played only level I weapons in me mp.  you will have to play a lot one way or the other.

While I agree that I hate having to grind out good gear to be deemed "acceptable" to MP groups. I also agree that was one of the good things about ME3 MP. Guns and the Tech Upgrades were situational, and you did not really need to worry to much about it, unless you were planning out Gold/Platinum Solo Runs etc.

However, part of gear is customization and appearance. I hope the gear and kit system offers more of an opportunity to add a personal touch this time around. Even if minor...

Given that this is a roleplaying game, and far moreso than Mass Effect, statistics and equipment are obviously going to have a quantitive impact. The edge is more likely to be in terms of the efficiency with which a mission is completed (in term of time and resources used) rather than being an insurmountable barrier. If combat encounters in past games are any indication then teamwork and tactics ultimately prove to be a greater force multiplier than an extra +5 bonus to an attribute.

The concern I have is that with the acquisition of perpetually greater gear it may eventually eclipse the need for teamwork at all, such as how in ME3 most waves turn into mad rush of lone wolves seeking respawned enemies rather than moving and working together in a synergistic fashion.

Given that we all start out with no promotions and basic gear, I imagine that it's not going to be incredibly hard to beat the higher difficulties without top tier items.

That said, high end gear will make it easier and I could see the average player struggling a bit without it.

Also if it's anything like ME3 MP then we'll have non ultra-rare gear that's just as good, if not better, than the actual ultra-rare stuff.

Where are your Ultra-Rares, now? :P
