I've never really understood this love for Morrigan. Perhaps DA3 will change that, but for me, she's always been a character I sort of love to hate. I always treated her well in DA:O and she was normally one of my constant companions, but only because I liked having a debuffer and Wynne was annoying as hell (if there was a way to kill her and still save the Circle, I'd do it). To me, Flemeth is a much more interesting character, even if she's as dubious or more than Morrigan. If the two ever came to blows, I'd be rooting for Flemeth.
I like Morrigan because at a glance, she's this mean uncaring ice queen, but if you look past that and get to know her you see that it's a fragile shell, an act, a lie Flemeth forced her to tell herself her whole life. If you show her the care and nurturing she claims to despise, she really breaks out of that and you see that she's actually quite passionate about the world and the people she surrounds herself with. She's genuinely curious and emotionally vulnerable, more akin to a newborn songbird than the pragmatic vulture she was taught to be.
Medhia_Nox implied that she's rather immature in at least a few ways, and I think that's part of the point behind her character in DA:O. Personally, I find it incredibly rewarding to help her grow past that, and it's that relationship between her and my Warden that makes her my favorite character in the franchise so far. I think if you just write her off because of her more negative ideals that she starts the game with then you essentially miss all of that. You really have to butt heads with her to understand her.
That's my perception of the character, anyway.
