No... It really wasn't. It painted the Chantry as waaaaay too much of a mustache twirling villain, who did things just be evuuuuuuuul.
This way is superior narratively speaking, since BioWare are going for the "no side is right" kind of deal.
The fact the Chantry would do it in order to keep the armed group of religious fanatics under control is the exact opposite of doing it because of "evil." The Templars using lyrium to enhance their abilities but being addicted to it made them a more interesting organization as it highlighted they had their own flaws and compromises to make. They were indebted and beholden to the Chantry in a way that was exploitative but the Chantry prevented the Templars from going all kill-crazy on mages.
Thedas isn't a place where everyone is justified.
People is a place where people do HORRIBLE THINGS because they have a justification.
