...Well, maybe not speaking of filthy mages...XD I don't think my mage would take that well.
Cullen: It was the shakes talking! Honest!

But seriously, if they add the Lyrium addiction as part of his arcs and handled well, it's certainly a topic that would be interesting to be involved in. How many RPGs have you played where drug addiction was involved in someone's development? If done right, this could possibly be an emotional ride with him as well as your Inquisitor, whether friendship or not.
"You're a high wizard, Harry."
I hope so. There's no reason he shouldn't be.
Random odd thought, but Templars need Lyrium because they're using magic without the "Magic Gene" or whatever it is that makes people not muggles in Dragon Age.
However, Alistair has a mage mother.
Is it possible Alistair can use his Templar abilities without Lyrium because he had mage potential?
And just misinterpreted the situation?

Just how much of a Mary Sue do you want him to be, exactly? Why don't we just say he's the last son of Krypton and call it a day.

I'm surprisingly okay with it on the assumption Alistair is this legendary hero background....but hasn't the personality for it.
And needs the Warden to tie his shoelaces.
Harded Alistair can tie his shoe-laces but needs the Warden to do everything else. I can only assume that's why Alistair left his kingdom for a year to go adventuring because they didn't have the Warden to remind them they can't do that.
It's like Martin and the Champion of Cyrodiil.
One is a Demigod and the Bastard Born Emperor who can save the universe by virtue of his sheer awesome.
The other is the guy who actually has to do everything because Martin is otherwise useless.
You're sick. Get em addicted then started introducing fees. Deaths to good for you
It's my plan to slowly conquer the whole of Thedas, I'm just starting with Fereldan as I know it well. ![]()

No there's an idea, every time my warden goes to deal with matter personally e.g. Witch Hunt/Awakening, Alistair takes a holiday and drags poor Teagan with him as he needs to be constantly 'advised'.-Babysat. 0_0 Who's running Fereldan then?

*Warden and Alistair come home*
Anora: *addressing nobles* Now, I am in charge and declare an arrest warrant for both Ali...OH HEY!
Warden: Andraste, Anora, AGAIN!?
Anora: I wasn't plotting against you!
Nobles: You weren't?
Anora: Shut up!
Alistair: And people wonder why I go on vacations.
Warden: Back in the dungeon/Being Queen-consort.

I don't believe Alistair is a Mary Sue or even a bad ruler, but this is so funny especially if Anora and Alistair married. XD
So will my canon Hawke...
I never considered it in the past, mainly because I took Alistair at his word and assumed it wasn't needed. I believe that was changed at some point, possibly in World of Thedas? Whatever the case, I didn't learn about it until long after I'd put down DA2... and since non-mages can't even use lyrium potions, I don't know that there's anything I could do to simulate addiction... buy a few extra now and then, but destroy them perhaps?
If this is an issue in DA:I, I think I'll have my warriors become Champions rather than Templars, even if they support the Chantry. I will do at least one human Templar, but for the most part I think I'll avoid the spec now that I have to consider the present and future complications...
Gaider has said that the Lyrium addiction was meant to play out in Alistair's storyline but they had to scrap it do to time and resources so they wrote in the whole not really needing Lyrium thing to fit in with the gameplay mechanic on being a Templar.
But it was not a compromise he was very happy with. So you will prob see them to continue to back peddle off it. And not really retacon in but just not bring it up again.

Hm... it's a shame that so much of the lore has to suffer because of the gameplay. Things like lyrium addicted Templars are what make the franchise unique. It sounds like that could have been an interesting addition to Alistair's character in DA:O, and even the Warden if they chose to follow that path...

That definitely would've been interesting, particularly for Alistair's development. It's the same when they cut out the option of the mages and templars in the Circle to attack you if you use blood magic.
i played bm warden(play by different rules) that was unnnecessary and arguably punishes. Class prestigeThat definitely would've been interesting, particularly for Alistair's development. Seriously speaking, I see lyrium much more as doping and steroids than drug. It's used for strengtening your abilities not for getting high ^^;
Thedas and the Chantry should've took this to heart:

It's first order only, any further orders and he needs to pay. Fereldan is lovely and I love dogs, so I'll happily take it off his hands.

Well, Ferelden will have a good leader.
Yeah. The part where Alistair sells the crown for a few vials of lyrium would've been my favorite part.
Only the crown?I bet he would sell the entire country for a fix.

That's what I meant. Sure, he'll literally sell his crown before he sells his title.

Maybe we'll have to help him break his addiction and support him through the withdrawal. That would make an interesting sidequest from him.
There's no end to the withdrawal. He'll always be in withdrawal. After you start using lyrium, you have two choices: either stop using it and constantly craving it for the rest of your life (and you won't be in a really good Physical and mental state) or continue using it until you break (which might or not happen. Gregoir is really old and he was still fine. Willpower seems to reduce or postpone the side effects).Maybe we'll have to help him break his addiction and support him through the withdrawal. That would make an interesting sidequest from him.
If I'm honest in reference to Alistair being king, I actually think his "stupidity" basically makes him a puppet for people like teagan too exploit. (although teagan seems like a nice guy) I really hope they address cullens "needs".

The game is more or less explicit Arl Eamon intended for Alistair to be a figurhead while he ran things behind the scenes.
Not because Eamon wants to rule but because he thinks Alistair is a moron.
Gently a moron, though.
The Warden can throw a spanner in the works re: this.
I think flaws make a good character. I mean, Cullen is crazily repressed and quite bigoted from time to time which is really interesting. I think revealing him to be hooked on Lyrium (like more Templars) would be another great facet to his character.
Um, I dunno but... I lurk in the Cullen thread from time to time and it doesn't look like his fans are really fond of the idea.
Also, the Cullen fans on BSN don't necessarily represent the entirety of the Cullen fandom. Jus' sayin'. Might be fans outside of BSN who like the idea.
