now that would be a great gameplay mechanic.  Use 1000 lyrium potions grow a third arm!

That would explain in-game why potions will be limited. Of course, when it was a pair of novice Wardens and a commoner-made-noble and their friends, there was no control, bot now that we have experts, the Inquisitor has no excuse not to be careful about side-effects. It's for our own good :P

I think I'm just going to let his addition of Lyrium increase until he's turned into a drooling lunatic, slaughtered the grand cleric and run through the the streets of Denerim with his small clothes. Seriously though, it'll be interesting to see if he even addict to lyrium.

I might be misunderstanding some posts, but I don't understand why some people are saying that they hope Cullen is addicted. Every templar is addicted to lyrium. Alistair is addicted to lyrium. Your Warden or Hawke, if templars, are addicted to lyrium.
Do you people mean that you hope that Cullen will show some of the lyrium side-effects?

I'm pretty sure I was joking since I have nothing against him, but what I meant is it'll be interesting to see the side-effects from the usage of Lyrium. That said there are more interesting to learn more about Cullen, more than seeing him suffer from the lyrium side-effects.

I don't hope him to be addicted, just addressed in some ways or used in a way that makes sense. Like they bring it up if Cullen is taken captive in Redcliffe and is deprived of lyrium. But, I hope the main focus would be on his views with mages and templars and how he plans to stand with it.

It's definitely a possibility that he is addicted. I guess Cass could be too. Not to mention my DA:O mage Warden who's probably a drooling lunatic by DA:I if that's what long-term lyrium addiction does to you.

I'm not hoping that he's addicted, but I'm fine with it if he is. I just hope that they don't just sweep it under the rug and don't tell us what the deal is. If he's addicted, I want to know. If he's not addicted, I want to know how he managed to avoid it (or got out of it).

He's a templar and has been one for over a decade.

I expect he's addicted, and simply can't stop taking after so long, otherwise he'll suffer lyrium withdrawal and possibly become a drooling mess or suffer other complications if he tried.

To be clear, it wasn't referred to your post alone. There were a lot before yours. And I understood that you were joking

I agree on what his plot should be focused on, but he is already addicted. He was a templars for already ten years. Templars are addicted to lyrium shortly after they start assuming lyrium.

Yup. Though Asunder shown that templars have to assume a lot bit of lyrium every week to keep the addiction in check.

The lyrium is what allows them to exercise magic negating abilities that enables them to combat mages more effectively.   So long as they keep taking the correct dosage, they can maintain their abilities and stay sane.      If they stop taking it they start suffering withdrawal symptoms and unable to function properly mentally.   They may not be drooling idiots but they certainly can't think straight.    All Templars are aware of this and so would always ensure they have an adequate supply with them when embarking on a journey.   Obviously when at home base they can simply get it from stores, or may be it is just routinely issued to them at meal times.

Previous games have conveniently ignored the necessity for lyrium when the PC trains as a Templar.    May be the powers we get are lower level ones that can be achieved simply by the correct training and discipline of the mind, without the need for lyrium.   Certainly Meredith and Evangeline seemed to be able to stop a mage's spell in its tracks by touching them and channelling their power into them, which I don't think is the same as anything the PC can do and so would appear to be higher level ability.   Perhaps this time round the Templar spec will clarify this for us.

Cullen is a long term Templars, as is Cassandra, so they will be addicted to lyrium.     However, they have probably not yet been taking it for long enough for the degenerative effects to set in.   They could be at risk, though, so may be there will be some sort of plot linked to this, possibly with us discovering a way to cleanse them of lyrium addiction, much in the same way that Fiona was cleansed of the taint, and then they are able to operate their powers simply by virtue of the amount of lyrium already in their system, or something similar.

For the record, Cassandra is not a Templar, she's a Seeker. They don't consume lyrium as Templars do.

They seem to possess similar abilities, that implies both groups consume lyrium.

Yup. They say he snorted so much lyrium dust that you could create an inch wide line stretching from the Chrysler building all the way to down to Cinderella's Castle in Orlando.

Sorry for going off topic, but who is the person in your avatar?

Ben from the David Lynch film Blue Velvet.

I think the reason people are focused on Cullen when they talk about the lyrium addiction is because he's an important character in the game (as your advisor) and a former templar. Truthfully, I think most of his character arc should go with his progressive view of mages and templars, particularly the Red Templars. But, if they add in the lyrium addiction, ESPECIALLY if he gets captured in Redcliffe if we send him and they deprive him of the lyrium, it would be interesting to see with his development.

I think lyrium addiction should be an important part of his character arc. Is he somehow so special that he doesn't suffer from lyrium withdrawal? Lyrium is the spice/melange of the DA universe for Templars. The lyrium must flow!

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

He wouldn't necessarily suffer from lyrium withdrawal even if he's addicted (and he is), as long as he assumes lyrium. He doesn't even need much: one little flask a week. I honestly doubt he'll have lyrium shortage, but we'll see.
What he could suffer is the lyrium's side effects based on prolonging use over years, but even this isn't necessarily going to happen. Gregoir was a templar for far more then Cullen and he was still lucid.

Are you talking about being addicted like all templars, or actually suffering from withdrawal or side effects?

Well, at least he isn't in a position of power, say, a king like Alistair who also happens to be a lyrium addict.

but since Alistair never took vows and officially joined the Order, why would he keep taking lyrium in the wardens?

But most Seekers are chosen from the elite ranks of the Templars, selected for their devotion and skill.

Maybe not all Seekers are former Templars, but a large number were and this means the lyrium dependency would have long ago set in.
