I got distracted by, of all things, watching clips of Rodney Dangerfield on Youtube but I'm sort of back on track right now.

It's a huge honor whenever you even mention my work, so you don't ever have to ask, believe me. He's yours for the using whenever you want. Though not in THAT way. He's a good Andrastian man in a committed relationship! You pervert.

:P

I love Dangerfield! I could see how he'd be distracting. xD

BAHAHAHA! xD Don't worry, despite my horridly bawdy sense of humor, I'm an honorable woman. I only moob-grope in a commited relationship, and I'm currently single (why do you think I have all the ribald comics? Have to have an outlet somewhere.). He's got nothing to worry about in that regard.

Well, it's a tad hard to write when you're laughing your arse off.

All right, that's good, 'cause another similarity of his with Legam is his reaction to someone commenting on his looks or groping.

True enough. Which is why I try to leave Comedy Central off if I'm writing.

Somehow, I'm not at all surprised. :D

A Bond Forged in Fire

Part Four: Lights in the Dark

“Stop squirming, Alistair!”

“But it itches!”

“Well, ignore it! If you don’t stop all this squirming, Maker knows I may ‘accidentally’ set you on fire!”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Taiyama normally would have found the argument between Wynne and Alistair while Wynne was trying to heal his wounds quite humorous were it not for the fact that the injuries were his fault. During the climb to reach the Urn of Sacred Ashes in order to heal the ailing Arl Eamon, Taiyama had been fascinated by a gong that stood out amongst the general ruin of the place. The fact that a giant, sleeping high dragon completely skipped his mind as his curiosity took over and he hit the gong before his compatriots could stop him. The sound had reverberated throughout the mountain and brought the wrath of one very grumpy high dragon onto them. The fight had been won but not without some rather significant injuries to everyone.

Now that they had limped back to camp at around dusk, Taiyama apologizing profusely all the way, Wynne and Taiyama had been focusing on healing both themselves and the other two who had come with them, Leliana and Alistair.

“Leliana, do you need any more healing?” Taiyama asked once he finished tying a bandage around his right arm.

Leliana, who was sitting on a log near the campfire, nodded. “Yes, I still have that injury on my right arm, if you’d like to take a look at it.” She smiled at him. “But hey, the bruises do make a pretty pattern!”

Taiyama snorted and laughed. Only Leliana could keep so cheerful at a time like this.

Taiyama walked over and knelt down beside Leliana, taking her arm and pulling up the sleeve of her shirt to get a better look at the bruises. His heart raced at the first touch and Taiyama silently thanked the Maker it was night so it would be difficult to see his blush. Some confident hero he was, when he couldn’t spit out the fact that he had fallen in love with Leliana a while ago. Her skin was so soft, though…

Desperately seeking some conversation to get his mind off the subject while he healed Leliana’s arm, he muttered “I’m sorry about this. It’s my fault…”

“Oh, no it’s not, stop beating yourself up,” Leliana responded, shaking her head. “Maker knows that dragon might have attacked us eventually. And even if it hadn’t, can you imagine what would have happened when people tried to pilgrimage here to see the Sacred Ashes? You actually saved a lot of lives by ringing that gong, I think.”

“I… I didn’t think about that. You’re right…” He smiled widely. “I guess we’re both good at showing each other things from another perspective, huh?”

Leliana smiled. “Right. I guess we’re even now, huh?”

“Hehe… Yeah, we’re even.”

Leliana giggled softly. “Besides, whatever happened to Mr. Confidence, hmm?”

Taiyama snorted. “You and I both know he’s an act, Leliana.”

“No, he’s not,” Leliana stated emphatically.

“Uh… What do you mean?”

“’You are what you do, what you choose’, right? Or does that only apply to me now?”

Taiyama’s eyes widened slightly in surprise for a moment, and then he barked out a laugh. “Come on, now, that’s no fair using my own words against me.”

Leliana winked slyly at him. “Guess we’re not even anymore, are we?”

“No. No, I suppose we’re not. Damn.” He took on an extremely sarcastic lamenting tone. “Oh, what shall I do now that fair lady Leliana has beaten me in my own game?! Agony! Woe! Heartbreak!”

The two broke down into a fit of giggles for a few moments, and then Taiyama finished healing up her wounds in silence.

She really does get me, though, doesn’t she? She’s such a wonderful person—beautiful, kind, devout—everything I fooled myself into thinking I saw in her. Even if she were to shoot down my advances, maybe I should just tell her and get it out of the way. I know she wouldn’t be mean or anything. I mean, what do I have to lose…?

“L-Leliana…I…”

Leliana glanced back at Taiyama. “Yes?”

I chickened out.

“U-Um… Your a-arm’s fixed,” Taiyama stated, letting go of Leliana’s arm and mentally cursing up a storm in elvish that would make a sailor cry tears of blood.

“Oh! Thank you very much.”

Taiyama nodded and sat down beside her on a different log, warming his hands in the fire.

“By the way, do you remember our discussion?” Leliana asked after a few minutes, piercing the absolute silence of the camp.

“About Marjolaine, right?” Taiyama asked, turning towards.

“Right. I thought about what you said and, well, you’re right. Despite what Marjolaine says, I am not her. I found peace in knowing the Maker and nothing can take that from me.”

Taiyama’s face lit up like one of the Circle Tower’s magical lanterns. “That’s good. I’m so glad I was able to help you with that.”

“Yes… Sometimes it takes others to show us the truths we hide from ourselves. You’ve…been a true friend and I thank the Maker for you every day.”

Taiyama’s eyes widened like saucers and his face turned redder than a dying sun. “I-I!... Well… I’m not…that is… er… Th-thank you… I feel the same way.”

Taiyama looked back at the fire and there was another minutes-long lull in the conversation. In the meantime, Leliana found herself analyzing Taiyama’s face—particularly, his eyes. He had a beautiful blue-green eye color that she had never seen before in her life. Then again, a lot of elves had exotic eye colors—in her time as a bard of Orlais, Leliana had seen quite a few different eye colors amongst the elven servants, even some purples and golds.

And she had never noticed this before, but when his face was cast in shadow his eyes seemed to…glow. Like two lanterns in the darkest night…rather poetic and fitting for someone like Taiyama. And he had such pretty eyelashes too. It was so easy to get lost in those eyes, to feel like you were home…

And that’s when she felt it.

A few simple physical signs that she had only felt once before: her stomach was turning flips in her stomach, her pulse was starting to race, and she was getting that little giddy thrill.

Maker… She was in love, wasn’t she?!

Taiyama’s embarrassed tone of voice brought her crashing back to reality. “Um… Leliana… Is something wrong?” Seems he had noticed her staring.

“Oh! I was just thinking and staring off into space, sorry,” Leliana covered for herself masterfully, thanking the Maker for once for her bardic training. “Say…do you remember anything about the Alienage? Was it bad?”

Taiyama thought for a moment. “Well, I don’t really remember that much, but from what I do remember of the Denerim alienage, it wasn’t all that bad. We had happiness too, mostly in family and friends. Seemed to me like everyone was friends in the alienage. You can always find ways to be happy no matter what’s happening in your life.” He shrugged. “Or maybe I was just too young to really understand what was going on.”

“Ah. You know, in Orlais elves are often highly prized as servants. They bring a sort of exoticness and are prized for their litheness and beauty. Nobles will often outbid each other for the best servants. You know, you might actually fetch a high price over there.”

“…Like a prize-winning bull, huh…?” Taiyama muttered softly, gazing into the fire with a look of melancholy.

“I! No! Oh, Maker, my words were poorly chosen. Please, forgive me, I didn’t mean to offend!”

Just excellent, Leliana. You realize that you’re in love with him and then you turn around and insult him with your tendency to run your mouth off without thinking! Just perfect! What’s wrong with you, Leliana?!

Taiyama looked towards her and smiled a genuine, forgiving smile. “Ah, it’s all right. If I didn’t know you better, I’d think you might be a tad racist but you’re not. You just kinda let your mind wander while talking sometimes. There’s nothing to really forgive.” He chuckled. “Heck, you kinda paid me a compliment there in your own way.”

Leliana inwardly rejoiced and outwardly sighed with relief. “Thank the Maker, I’m glad you aren’t mad…” She stood up. “Anyway, I’m going to go to bed. Thanks for talking with me, Taiyama.”

“The pleasure’s mine, Leliana. Goodnight.” He paused for a moment. “Sweet dreams.”

“You too, Taiyama.”

Leliana walked into her tent and laid down on her bedroll. A sleepless night was certainly ahead as she contemplated her feelings.

Author's Note: As I mentioned, I'll be including music I listen to while writing in the Author's Notes. This time it was Leliana's Song for no particular reason other than it's hauntingly beautiful and reminds me of Leliana, of course.

As you might notice, this chapter is a tad schizophrenic and you might realize as you read why I had such trouble figuring out where to go with this. I realized right after the last update that I had totally forgotten to write out Leliana actually falling in love with Taiyama, so this chapter was both a way to do that and to tie together some other plot elements. I probably would do this better if I devoted more time and chapters to building up their relationship, but I don't so there ya go. I tried to make this as good as I could and I'm sorry if it kinda sucks.

Also, I got the information about elven eyes from "The Calling"--they do, in fact, seem to glow in the dark a bit, according to Cailan. And that part about Leliana discussing the Alienage happens with mage or city elves you play. Even if your mage likely doesn't remember much of the Alienage. It's kind of a bug for mages but I wanted to work it in.

Also again, the astute among you may be wondering, "Chad, you sexy paragon of masculinity, you never wrote out when and where Taiyama realizes he's in love with Leliana! He just seems to jump in right there with no buildup!" To which I reply "Why, that's because his realization happens during the Circle Tower, which is a chapter for another time, Mind-Slave!"

(Just so you know, I am typing while still laughing really, really hard from the, "Chad, you sexy paragon of masculinity..." bit, so please forgive any typos)

About all I can at the moment is, "B'AAAAAAW!" :D It was nice to see you write things more from Leliana's perspective. And the mini-banter between them was fun.

Also, a note to any PC Dragon Age players confused about the gong thing: In the console versions of DA:O, you don't get a horn from Kolgrim when you kill him. Instead, you can summon the high dragon by hitting a gong outside that's absent in the PC version.

... Sexy paragon of masculinity... *Gigglesnorts* xD Oh, my sides hurt...

Ahahaha, what can I say? I'm such a modest man, you MUST be laughing because I have grossly underestimated my own attractiveness. :P In all seriousness, though, I'm glad I got a laugh out of that.

It's nice to change things up every now and then, I think. Leliana's perspective and fun and a tad more difficult because I didn't create the character. I'm glad you liked the banter, though, I was afraid it wasn't up to my usual par.

Ah, yes, I neglected to mention that fact about the differences in PC and console versions. Thanks for clearing that up.

xD Hey, I have no idea what you look like. It was obviously tongue-in-cheek. I love faux narcissism for humor. xD I've used it myself on several occasions and gotten big laughs. Especially when I point out quirky things about myself and act like they're the best thing to grace humanity.

I know what you mean. Leliana was more challenging for me to write than Legam, since she's Bioware's. But I eventually got pretty comfortable writing her.

No problem. :) I was so used to the gong after the Xbox that the horn threw me off the first time I played on the PC.

Yes, faux narcissism rocks as a form of humor. I love it dearly so and do the same thing that you do.

It's a fun way to throw your friends off if they're used to you being really humble. :D Bonus points if you actually ARE very humble by nature.

Also: I am drawing amusing idea. Will try to finish it tonight.

Heheheh. xD I'm most of the way done now. Have one more person to draw, then I have a few minor spells to do, add text, and I'm done. I'm not shading this one.

I've started delving into your fics! I really love your writing style. I realised when I started that I'd actually read the calling one before, sometimes I read but don't comment, sorry!

I particularly like your note about a mage's reaction to killing their first abomination. You know, I've played two of them now and it never occurred to me that I might be killing someone I knew? I'm all upset now... :(

(That means good job!)

Again... Hooray for uniting Leliana fans through competition! :D Now if I can just get Sisi to join Maker's Breath... >.> ... Which just got past the 100 members mark, I just noticed. Woot!

... It's sad that my little DA:O fan comm has leagues more members than my comic's fan comm, even though the latter's been open far longer. Also probably sad that I post in the DA:O one way more often.

It's a LiveJournal Leliana fan community I started back in December, since I didn't want to spam swooping_is_bad with my Leliana-centric stuff, even though swooping allows general DA:O stuff in addition to Alistair fanstuffs. That, and I wanted a place for Leliana fans to gush over her, since Alistair and Zevran get more attention in the fan comms.

Yup! You did! You're on the members list now. :D Which means you can see members-only posts too. I've got a fan art or two marked members-only on there, but you'd have to hunt back to find them. Or just search by the "amell" tag; I'm pretty certain I'm still the only one with posts that uses an Amell warden. Taiyama's got Surana and almost everyone else seems to prefer Cousland or Tabris.

'S fine, don't worry about it. Frankly, keeping this on the front page only helps me get more readers :P

ONE OF US! ONE OF US! ONE OF US!

And yeah, I'm pretty much the only Surana 'round there. I can't help it, I just love the whole "elven mage" thing because ALMOST EVERYONE hates you for either being a mage, being an elf, or both. It makes Taiyama a more compelling character because he's able to stay idealistic and believes in mankind despite it. I certainly wouldn't have the strength to do that.

I made my male mage elven too, we call him 'conflicted mage' because I created him for my evil playthrough, but, well, I have discovered I have a hard time being evil. I'm fairly sure it's Teran's fault, he thinks everything through entirely too much. He was supposed to hate Alistair and romance Morrigan. Couldn't do it. I then tried romancing Zevran with him, couldn't do it. We all know who he's in love with... and you just CAN'T play an evil character with Leli by your side, it's just NOT possible. He's a mess, a quivering mess.

Heh... I kinda have trouble playing evil characters, I usually have to give them some redeeming features. Mithos Tabris, for example, was a real **** to anyone that was part of the Thedas culture he hated (that is, of course, unless he could manipulate them--for example, he was "friends" with Alistair and Leliana even though he hated them; he was simply manipulating them into thinking he liked them so they would do things for him more) but he was a saint to anyone outside of that culture--elves, barbarians, witches (he romanced Morrigan and loved her dearly), etc. I was later able to play a more evil character (Kristine Amell). The way I compare those two characters, Mithos is more "Just as planned..." evil and Kristine is more "Muhahaha! I am Princess Stabbity! Stab, kill, kill!" evil (though she definitely had soft spots for Zevran and her friends).

But morally ambiguous characters? Can't do 'em. I tried with Speirs Aeducan. He was originally thought up as a "victory at any cost" who let the label "soldier" define his entire existence since he left Orzammar. But he slid and slid towards good until he became a good, if impatient, man. The only thing I managed to have him do bad was keep the Anvil of the Void but I couldn't stand Shale's accusing "It killed Caridin!" stuff. I ended up reloading and lying to Shale about it so she wouldn't make me feel so bad.
