I totally understand what y'all have been saying that it's impossible for the Companions, some of whom are missable/maybekillableduetostory, to have equal amounts but I would be happy if some of them were SOMEWHAT important, like the person above me said,

I don't think they'll all have the same level of importance, but I do hope that they all have at least some plot importance and are connected to the bigger events in some way (whether it be good or bad situations). That's what I wished for characters like Zevran and Fenris, who were interesting yet very disconnected feeling to me.

Zev and Fen were both very interesting characters to me yet when you invite them to your party they appear in very little capacity elsewhere aside from their own personal quests and interactions.

I think depending on what kind of PC you play, different companions are going to be more significant than others, but each of them will have something to offer in terms of plot.

I like how Isabela showed a companion can be both optional and relevant to the plot. In her case, even more so than other companions you can't just skip, like Merrill.

I'm pretty sure Solas is going to play a very important part at the beginning of DA:I.

He most likely is going to teach the Inquisitor how to control their new-found power.

I don't think that all of the companions will be important to the main story, there's just too many of them. But they should have some minor connections to some quests like Oghren and his marriage to Branka or Zevran who was the assassin sent by Loghain. None of the companions should suffer the same fate as Leliana did in Origins.

I still think each companion will be plot important (but not necessary) to a particular faction that you can recruit/disable. Such as Dorian was in that demo to the group you were killing at Redcliffe. Blackwall will be important for the Grey Wardens, Cassandra for the Seekers, etc.

I was more talking plot wise.

Plot Wise, i don't see how they could filter in major importance on an optional character to recruit.

Just putting that out there, that was what held back Zevran and Fenris.

They were optional :P

Eh. I didn't think characters like Leliana or Sten were any lesser for their lack of bearing to the main overarching plot, IMO. Their level of importance in your particular story all depends on your relationship/interactions with them, and I was okay with that. For instance a character who romanced Leliana and brought her on every quest probably felt like she was a pretty significant character in the story, even if, when it comes down to it, she wasn't.

Mind you I do agree, I would like some degree of plot relevance for each companion, and I think there might be. I doubt they'll be critical to any particular plot as they can all be driven out/not recruited, but I think each one might open up new scenarios for many different plot lines, like Blackwall with the Wardens, Vivienne with the mages, Solas with the Fade, etc. We've already seen some of this with Dorian and Alexius.

It'd be nice but the only character that I will find important to all my playthroughs is the Tevinter Dorian. I'm taking that guy everywhere.

If I remember, I heard a statement saying that most of the party members are optional and of equal importance. The advisors might play a more prominent role in the plot, while the party members provide spice on the missions (with a few plot important, of course)

I would like to see more sex between companions being important plot points. Especially the kind of "I really, really hate you, but we have to sleep together to save the world and keep people from dying" angry sex.

To make things especially awkward, maybe only Dorian knows a ritual that will close the final tear, and that ritual involves intercourse with a female elf (aka Sera).

But, then again, I've got a dirty mind.

Equal importance to the plot? Doubtful. Equal amount of dialogue lines? Probable.

The thing is that people who are important to the plot will continue to be so even if you don't keep them as companions.   For example, in DA2 you didn't have to recruit or use Isabella but she had still stolen the Tome which was keeping the Arishok in Kirkwall.   You had to help Anders at the beginning to get the maps but after that you could ignore him and in Act 2 even tell him that he was having a bad effect on the mage rebellion, after which I believe you don't see him again until the end.   In other words he could still make his bomb without your help and activate it.    Obviously it affected you more if he had involved you but it would seem strange if every companion you encountered was closely connected to the main plot.     With Origins non of the companions was essential to fulfil your ultimate goal and kill the archdemon and the only reason some seemed to play a more important part than others was because you chose to include them.   Alistair was there for the majority of the time but you could kill him off at the Landsmeet; it seemed like you had to take Oghran with you to the Deeproads but in fact there was a way to drop him almost immediately after he insisted on coming along.

What seemed different between characters was whether or not you could successfully sell them out.   Fenris definitely got the short straw there.    Even if you give Isabella to the Arishok, she still escapes (and the Qun are meant to be so efficient!); you can kill Merrill's entire clan but you can't kill Merrill (until the end); you can tell Cullen about Anders but they still find it impossible to arrest him (even if he is standing right there with you pointing at him).    Also I never quite got why I couldn't just give Flemeth's amulet to Marethari and say "job done" because taking Merrill was never part of the deal with Flemeth.

I'm hopeful that this time round such oddities will not occur.
