Age discrepancy in DAI's romances?

I think you want a range of ages in the team, which DAI does quite well, but what I do find slightly odd is the age of the LI's for a straight male character.

If I came to you and said "I want to make a game that has romance in it but the LI's for a straight male protagonists will be two women in their mid to late thirties", you might think I was a little crazy considering the age range of gamers and the fact that most guys tend to prefer women of their age or younger.

Of course I am guessing Josephine's age based on one picture and the fact that she is an 'old' friend of Lelianna.

That would depend entirely on the age of the protagonist, wouldn't it?

Some men like an older woman......

3-5 years of age difference is okay for me personally. Over 5 years....Yeah, I am having trouble with that idea...

So my male Inquisitor will most likely go for Josephine..

Which leaves my female Inquisitor in a quandry....Both Inquisitors are in the 25-28 years old range and Blackwall looks like he is in his mid 40s ? The other options are an ex-templar and a Ben-Hassarath.

Ah well, here's hoping we can help the Bull with his PTSD and get him to get out of the Qun and be a Vashoth.

That's true but personally I don't pick an age for my protagonist I kind of think of them as an age that seems appropriate to the story.  The Warden seemed to me to start quite young, about 18 or so.  And I would say Hawk and Sheppard feel about right starting mid to late 20's (maybe Sheppard more late 20's).  There is a bit of a problem with the protagonist being older because they develop so much in the games and achieve so much.  If they were already 40+ you would have to resolve the question why this great hero starts out so unknown and relatively weak.   Of course it could be done with good writing.

It's about time we got the option to play an older, more experienced character. With the possible exception of Sera and Cole, the cast appear to be a wiser, more experienced group. And that's awesome.

Hawke and Shepard both had set ages though, while the Warden was open to interpretation. Personally I prefer 25-35 for my protagonists, which incidently is also the age of Hawke and Shepard.

They circumvented the lack of player knowledge with both Hawke and Shepard through clever use of dialogue, which is one of the reason the voiced protagonist is one of the ebst things to ever happen to DA. An example: In the prologue of Mass Effect, you come across a prothean artifact. In the briefing of the mission the player get the dialogue option "Prothean?", which results in Shepard asking "Didn't the Prothean disappear 50,000 years ago?", which implies Shepards previous knowledge of the subject, but initiates convenient plot exposistion for the player audience.

Then you get ME3 where you can ask a VI program if it's an asari or not. Or you can ask if asari can mate with their own species in ME. GGShepard.

I enjoy playing older characters anyway. This works out perfectly for me. I've always found it odd that DA games give the protagonist a set age range.

I mean, did anyone really buy that Hawke was in his late teens/early twenties at the start of DA2 when he speaks with Boulton's voice?

His default appearance even looks at least to be in the late thirties range.

Exactly. When I was a teen, playing a teenager protagonist in an RPG irked me, mainly because they frequently seem way too mature/accomplished for their age (they are usually written by adult writers after all). Now that I'm in my 20s, roleplaying a teen would be even more egregious, so being a protag in his mid-late 20s/early 30s seems a perfect fit for me.

Besides, there's this whole "Mrs Robinson" angle with Cass/Josephine (or Blackwall if you're female), which is sooo freakin HOT. B)

5 of her 6 children were mages.

Wait, I rememebr that Leandra said that all of Revka's kids were taken, but she never mentioned a specific number. Was this actually confirmed?

(And in keeping with the topic) If I'm being honest, age doesn't really matter to me when it comes to companions or romance as long as they're interesting characters. It will be interesting to see if their ages factor into their relationship with the inquisitor and possibly other companions.

In any case I'm still going to roll a relatively young PC since I'm not that old myself :P

I think the ages work perfectly fine for the story. And me personally perfer there being an age gap anyway XD so I am perfectly fine with Blackwall and Iron Bull.

I believe the PC is more of a Cmd. Shepard this time. You're already experienced or battle hardened.

The Champion and the Warden both were younger.

This, basically.

So here's the thing. I plan on playing at least my first Inquisitor as someone in their mid-20's, to reflect my own personal lack of familiarity with the game in a believably naive, in-universe way.

Problem is, all of the romance options seem to be in their mid-30's, early 40's. Where's the representation for younger Inquisitors? I'm not trying to feel like Dustin Hoffman in "The Graduate" when it comes to relationship arcs.

Really?  I see Sera, Josphine, and Dorian as all in their 20s.

Id say female Hawke could pass for being pretty young, default male Hawke not so much

I wanted to play someone younger again after Hawke who seemed to be in his mid 30s at the begining of the game and aged by the end of it by 7 years. My Inquisitor will probably be between 25-30 years old. I suppose that makes both Josephine and Cassandra not really controversial.

Alistair is 20? I honestly thought he was in his late 20/ early 30s with the way he looks in Dragon age 2.

With the time jumps, he would be 27 by the time you see him in DA2.

Female Hawke might look that. Male one? Not so much.

EDIT: Looked it up. Judging from the time Leandra left Kirkwall he/she is about 25 in Prologue. But seriously. He looks nearly 40.

'Eighteen years of loving, etc. Gone!' to paraquote Mother. d:
So Bethany / Carver were 18 at the beginning of the game ... I'm pretty sure at some point it references Hawke being 2 years their senior, but maybe I'm making that up. I was under the impression that Hawke was also 20 at the state of DA2, and 27 by the end of it.

Leandra was pregnant with Hawke 25 years before the start of the game.

Amen, it wouldn't make any sense for the Inquisition to be lead by a bunch of barely legal teenagers. Having several characters be mid 30s+ just makes sense since the Inquisition is going to need to be staffed by professionals with leadership experience.

As you get older, age differences (unless they're significantly younger) become less and less relevant in relationships.

A 30 year old dating a 40 year old is not the same as an 18 year old dating a 25 year old.

Just for curiosity's sake, how old did you think Leandra was? No way she was able to have children like that.
