I like me some Jrpg every once in a while, and then we got final fail XIII. I would guess that Bioware would want to pick up some of the lost followers of said titles and make a game that caters to them as well. Anyone know how/what they are doing to market this audience?

Ahhh.........nothing. Bioware games and JRPG are pretty different though if your like me, you enjoy lots of different types of RPG games.

Also, Final Fantasy hasn't lost fans, FF13 sold well enough to justify 2 sequels. Thats far FAR from a failure.

I am mostly interested in features. I think the tactical pause and play is a step in the right direction, though it is tbd whether this is actually needed in gameplay or if it just there to look pretty.

Funny enough I played a hell of a lot of that game, but found it a bit lacking in the tactical department. I also thought that instead of making those sequels because of sales they made them to cover up their mistakes. I could be the minority saying this though, IDK.

Well, just being an RPG was good enough for me to check out DAO. And JRPGs are what started me on my gaming journey in the first place/what I've played the most of.

Nothing really, they already have massively over-sized swords and "knives" lol.

I was a huge JRPG fan as well, primarily Final Fantasy until FF13 showed up. Then I found Mass Effect, which was my gateway to DA and never looked back. Ironically, what killed FF for many was their attempt create a JRPG that appealed to westerners. They weren't doing that before and we loved their games, so I don't see why they felt the need to change. Luckily, they seem to have finally figured that out. Took them long enough...

I never got the sense that they were attempting to, despite what the snarkers would have you believe. All the more exaggerated elements that people like to shout "JRPG! anime!!!" have been more about them struggling to find DA's "identity" than a shift toward any actual eastern themes.

I may be int he minority here btu I personally liked every single game int he XIII trilogy. Not nearly as much as I liked prior games in the series obviously but they were still good games int heir own right. And like people've said, enough to warrant two sequels which werepretty good.

On Topic,

I don't think Bioware needs to do anything to attract JRPG fans, JRPGs were also what got me into gaming in the first place so yeah. If you want to be super serious though I think anynthing along the lines of cool looking weapons and magic is enough to attract rpg fans of any kind.

Especially since Bioware has always added a "dating sim" factor to their games and building relationships among main characters, an aspect found in many JRPGs. So everything Bioware's already done is enough.

All Bioware would need to do for a JRPG enthusiast like me to be sold on their games from now til the end of time is to have better music. I don't want any atmospheric or ambient crap or anything that tries too hard to be "epic". All I want is a good, fitting, memorable, and melodic soundtrack.

When I started playing the Persona series, it certainly wasn't because of specialized marketing aimed at fans of WRPGs or because they plopped in features that would appeal to WRPG fans. I picked up P4G because a friend recommended it as a really great RPG, and then I eventually played all the other games that I could get in the series.

I don't really get the impression that BW has done anything in particular aimed at attracting JRPG fans. And at the end of the day, I think that what matters most is just creating a good RPG, period. Do it right, and it will probably attract people, regardless of their general RPG preferences (FYI, I love both Japanese and western games).

Now, back to starting the third trial in Dangan Ronpa 2 for me. :P

Just FYI if some of you are wondering, I just thought FF XIII, was a bit lackluster when it came to controlling certain aspects of combat, namely that I couldn't control the AI party members directly, or that all I had stats wise was HP, str, and mag, and they didn't have much explanation for how accessories are placed on our characters, as well as the lack of explaining how certain things happened in the storyline. The latter was really not that big of a deal because I kinda expect that to some degree.

The HQ you get in DAI seems reminiscent of the Suikoden series, if you have ever played them.  One of my favorite RPG series of all time.  The fact that we have gotten the entire FFXIII trilogy last gen and still haven't gotten a Suikoden VI is a joke to me, lol.

I am not going to trash FFXIII.  Just wasn't a fan for various reasons.

But yeah, the whole castle building aspect to DAI seems to remind me of Suikoden.  Castle starts out in shambles, but as you recruit more members things start to get repaired and new rooms open up that were previously blocked off.  Could be really amazing if they pull it off right.

Suikoden is good, but it still has the standard JRPG anime bullshit and fan service (and horrid story telling).  Actual game mechanics wise though, it's pretty entertaining.  I played 2 and 3, they basically play like the older FF's with some strategy game elements thrown in.  Easily some of my favorite games on the PS2? Whatever console it was.

I don't think Bioware has to specifically do anything to attract JRPG fans other than releasing on the consoles.  Unlike the PC there aren't exactly many RPG's on those platforms to choose between.

i am a big fan of RPG and a big fan of anime This should make me a  big  JRPG  fan I enjoy the JRPG style   of story  But there is one thing prevents me to enjoy most JRPG I tried it, there is too much to read in order to understand and enjoy the story

I can enjoy JRPG like Persona 3 and  4  Because  most the important dialogue in the story  is Voiced

I believe only the second Suikoden game is hella expensive since it's absolutely rare. I reccomend playing it on a PS1 emulator, that and the first one if you want your data to carry over.

I totally forgot to mention the Suikoden Series in terms of castle building. The way Suikoden did it was that you could recruit people to work as different functions of your castle/hq such as a blacksmith, a nurse, an innkeeper, a merchant, even a botanist and sometimes a stylist and even more. So yeah, Skyhold is definitely reminiscent of that.

But as previously stated, Bioware is doing good with just trying to make a good RPG that any fan would enjoy whether be Western or Eastern styled.

Though dialogue/tone choices are very Personaesque now that I think about it. Along with being able to develop a relationship/approval with your party members.

Nothing I like all kind of RPG, actually I'm playing tales of xillia 1 and 2, and was also disappointing by most of the lasts JRPG games but I don't expect Dragon age or any others western RPG to remind me them. DA:I just need to be a great game in his own ways. You don't have to copy other games to attract his audience, we can enjoy both..

Agreed

It's a great series, especially episode 2 and contrary to what relhart said, the story, the background and the characters are all greats.

You have your own castle but you can't build it, it juste improves when you recruit new members. You also have battles with your armies but the battle system is different in all episodes. There are also a lot of mini-games very funny.

There are copies on Ebay from anywhere between 600 and 3000 dollars (it is not THAT good).  Makes me seriously consider putting my copy up though.  I hate recommending emulators, but this is the sort of scenario where they are the correct choice.

You should give the Tales of-series a chance, most of the recent ones are pretty much fully voiced, and they feature one of the best battle systems in the JRPG genre IMO.

OT: I really don't think Bioware should market to the JRPG crowd as DAI looks to play nothing like most JRPGs. Most JRPGs have rather linear storylines and set protagonists, which is something that would be considered a criminal offense if it happened in a WRPG (Just look at the amount of comments about how Geralt sucks in any thread where the Witcher is mentioned) :P

I don't think they'll have to do anything either.

Like other posters here I got heavily into gaming via JRPGs (Shadow Hearts and MegaTen games in particular) and gravitated towards WRPGs within time. In fact, the thing that appealed to me, and maybe others, about Western games is that they provide me with something that JRPGs didn't, a much deeper choice when it came to the character I controlled and a less linear path to traverse.

Bioware, and western RPG developers as a whole, don't need to advertise to the JRPG crowd because the ones that desire a different RPG experience will seek them out, be it via recommendations or other means.

Je-sus. I guess so. I'd have to sell my soul to get a hard copy of that game. I suppose as a consolation I'm getting DA:I as a hard copy though.

No

Interesting how one of your favorite games on the PS2 has horrid storytelling. Anyway, I'd take it over the newer FFs personally. I consider the likes of Suikoden 2 to be very nearly equal to the FF6s and 7s, there isn't a whining emo kid with spikey hair though, I'll give it that.

This isn't really on topic but holy heck trashing Suikoden 2 was a bit hard to take.

On the topic AFAIK that was never a plan for them to begin with, I saw a panel with David Gaider and Ken Levine, and when Ken Levine went some people like you know.. "JRPGs" in disgust, and David Gaider said nothing to really contradict that for all I know the DA developers pretty much all hate JRPGs.
