some of those mage hats from DAO made me cringe. example is the creepy one of morrigan on page 1
The tradition of ugly headgear continues: the default Inquisitor helmet

MESSAGE POPULAIRE !
Okay, bear with me, I think this could be fun. Internally, whenever we have big discussions about visual designs we came up with a rule:
You are allowed to say that something sucks IF you provide at least one alternative that you think is better.
It helps to clear away the fog of vague personal opinion (or it can show that a dissenting voice has little to no taste and can therefor be ignored). It also helps to create a weather vane of the team's overall tastes and preferences. If you're down for playing along and following our rule, I'd be interested to see what everyone thinks works/doesn't work.

I've never been a big fan of headgear, but I do like the helmet for the inquisitor in the trailers. Heavy armor makes more sense with that helmet but that's imo
But I really do want this hat. ![]()

I'll bite:)
Thamond (the Inquisition captain from one of the trailers) has a cool helmet. I like Cole's hat very much, and there is a picture of Cole and the Inquisitor (as an archer, I believe?) where the Inquisitor has a sort of kettle hat which looks kinda cool.
Generally I'm a fan of "realistic" armour and weapons, i.e. stuff that looks like it could've been worn in our world, even if it's not a direct copy of any real world items.

For what it is worth, I think the headgear is pretty sweet from what I have seen.

You know, I had complaints about DA:O and DA II, but looking at the designs for DA I, I feel like it's addressed most of my issues.

Here are some examples of what I think "suck" and should be avoided. Obviously this is SWTOR, but the problem of having terrible looking headgear spans multiple games and even genres. I also realize cherry-picking the most hilariously bad looking helmets is not too constructive, but this is a real problem. Nothing kills my desire to roleplay or invest myself into my character than my character getting a piece of armor that makes him/her look like a moron. Please, keep the armor and headgear dignified.

This one is sort of hard for me, as a google image search for "hats smaller than Cole's" pretty much reveals every hat ever made outside of Mexican souvenir shops ![]()
In the interest of playing along: Huuuuge hat is too huge and looks silly because of it: Cole's hat
This hat is also large, but at least it doesn't hang over his shoulders, and is probably ok: Some dude's freebooter hat off ebay

There has to be a particular story behind Cole's hat (a huge story). It's weird and makes me more curious about him, I like this hat.

I think the helmet is pretty ugly, but I love The Hat. Cole's hat is also pretty ugly, but it suits him. Vivienne's hat is the stuff of nightmares. It makes me long for the dignity of the conehead hats. I loved the hoods from DA2 and I'm hoping to see a bunch in DAI. I will probably learn to craft The Hat and a hood and all my Inquisitors will wear them.

I don't spend hours in the character creator to justify enabling helmets in-game (I'm assuming there will be a toggle), but I think the helmet looks pretty spiffy. /shrug Haven't noticed anything "off" about it when seeing it on characters, but I've only really seen it in-motion on a male human.

I'm no artist and I couldn't draw more than a stick man if I got paid 10k for it, but I'll try and specify what I think is the issue.
My main observation is that the helmet looks great when someone holds it in their hands. Seeing it that way, I'd never have guessed that I wouldn't like it on someone's head. Seeing it on the character models on the DA website, however, I find it ugly. Mostly, not always. So the problem might be that the helmet doesn't fit some character models. I'll go over the different types with -1 = ugly, 0 = meh, 1 = good:
Elf female:
Mage -1, Rogue -1, Warrior 0
Human female:
Mage 0, Rogue -1, Warrior 1
Dwarf female:
Rogue -1, Warrior 0
Elf male:
Mage 1, Rogue 0, Warrior 1
Human male:
Mage 1, Rogue 0, Warrior 1
Dwarf male:
Rogue 1, Warrior 1
The pattern is that the helmet looks better on males than on females, better on warriors than on other classes and better on dwarves than on non-dwarves. So, the problem may be that the same helmet design and size is used for all character models.
The thing is, my preferred character types are non-warriors and females of various races, so the helmet looks bad on the types I prefer. I didn't pay much attention to the other models before since I'm not as interested in them.
That I generally dislike face-concealing helmets does not help.
The best solution to this, in my opinion, would be to not use one and the same helmet design for all classes and races and for both genders. Marketing may think having one iconic helmet is advantageous. Maybe they're right, and as long as I'm not forced to wear it in-game with my female rogues and mages I wouldn't mind. But I think the purpose may be better served by giving each class appropriate headgear. When I look at the female qunari rogue, for instance, I always think that the elven rogue would also look better without a helmet.

Mhairi's helmet has other problems with those giant dragon wings. It's not ugly but hugely impractical. On the other hand, it doesn't conceal the face and that's good.

I'm not a huge fan of helmets and hats. since I spend a lot of time in CC I prefer to see my PCs hair and face in dialogue, cutscenes and even during combat.
I know that toggles aren't a magical solution to everything
but I've always used hide helmet toggle and I really hope DAI has it.
Instead of huge helmets and stupid mage hats I'd prefer to see more circlets. I liked the circlets in Skyrim, they were simple and didn't obstruct the face.

If we separate the classes into (roughly) cloth-leather-metal, we should be fairly good with circlets -hats (or hoods or bandanas)-crowns. The latter would be a full crown as something that can be seen in crown of Ner'Zhul, with armor to match.
If you are planning to be on a front line taking hits from sharp and pointy objects, it makes sense to have a face covering heavy helmet. Sticking it on a rogue or even worse a clothie mage makes no sense. If the mage's hat is imbued with magic and thus providing bonuses, great. That enchantment can easily be placed on a circlet. I think it's just a matter of keeping most of character's head open. So circlets = good, turbans = bad. Bandanas are good, full face masks are bad. And uh..sorry plate users.
As promotional materials usually requires hero's face to be covered (unless you of course have a default face like ME, which...I guess doesn't work since they don't have a 'default' face for every race/gender combination before promotional materials start airing) they stick to plate.

I have no issue with either the hat or the Helmet, but in an effort to provide some useful feedback when asked for it I will provide some images of headgear I think would work better.
