The tradition of ugly headgear continues: the default Inquisitor helmet

Ok. Like I said, the default helmet sucks because due to its design it is more dangerous to the wearer than it is helpful. Upper chest and neck injuries are guaranteed should the inquisitor ever look down or turn their head. It also decreases mobility greatly.

A fairly rational reason to find it sucky I think.

Good, now provide an alternative.

I love the Dragon helm and wish I could get a Physical copy of it and place it on a stand next to my computer I think it would be so Awesome, be cool if we out grow the helmet in game if we could place it on a armor stand in the Inquisitors Office and eventually have an entire suit of Armor on display, as you see in many high ranking officials offices of the era.

Okay, bear with me, I think this could be fun. Internally, whenever we have big discussions about visual designs we came up with a rule:

You are allowed to say that something sucks IF you provide at least one alternative that you think is better.

It helps to clear away the fog of vague personal opinion (or it can show that a dissenting voice has little to no taste and can therefor be ignored). It also helps to create a weather vane of the team's overall tastes and preferences. If you're down for playing along and following our rule, I'd be interested to see what everyone thinks works/doesn't work.

Brilliant idea!

So, what does not work: Every mage hat in Dragon Age history so far, ever, not including DAI. For one, I haven't seen very many of DAI's hats yet and two, those I have seen (Vivienne) are lovely, but ONLY on the character I've seen them on (Vivienne!). Just to clarify, technically, the past mage hats are well-done. Fashionably, well...no.

What does work:

Tradition - Conicals, wide-brims, top hats and hoodies

Grandiose - bonnets, masks, crowns

No hats! - ornate hair, headbands, tiaras

Yes, notice how I used some of your own art for this? How come as gorgeous as this was, it was never an actual option D: For shame!

I would approve if that type of hat is available to the Inquisitor (and not just Cole).

Completely agree regarding the wide brims.  Cole's hat is something my Inquisitor absolutely must wear.

@Grayvisions:

I'm sorry, but those are no improvement at all. The first two thirds, anyway. That helmet beats anything in DA2 in its ugliness, and I'd run away from the hats in the first two pictures. I agree with "more ornate hair, headbands etc.." but I wouldn't want to wear any of those three except the first, and it is indeed odd that this is DA art and was never realized in any of the games.

It's actually not the worst piece of headgear I've ever seen, and it looks okay on the male human Inquisitor imo. As has already been pointed out on the first page, compared to the mage hats we've been cursed with in the past, it's really not so bad. Besides, we've seen fancy hats in past DA:I screenshots, etc. I'm pretty sure we'll have a wide variety of options to choose from that are suitable for each class.

We talking about the fish helmet the Inq had?

I think it is a good balance of looking protective, while staying expressive. Plus, there's a dragon on it!

Besides, the legend of ugly hats has been centred on mage hats. And the cloth hat we've seen is... well, either fabulous, or extravagant, depending on your opinion. But not really ugly anymore.

Ugly? Kinda.

Not a huge fan of the hat. Thankfully, there should be a nifty variety of headgear options.

Yeah i really dislike that default helmet. Hopefully the "Hide Helmet" option is still in the game, because I can not activate that fast enough.

Its just so goofy looking. I look at it on the Inquisitor and I dont think "There's an intimidating individual" I think "What the hell is this clown wearing?"

As for what could be better, hell I don't know. Something that doesn't look like i'd get it at some medieval themed kids birthday party. Something that doesn't look like it would cause more harm than good.

I do like that sweet looking mage hat they showed a while back. Hope they didnt get rid of it.

Actually I found the helmet cool enough. Definitely not comparable to DA:Os mage hats.

My favorite helmets are the Warhammer ones. I always pictured the rogue Inquisitor as a Witch Hunter and the Mage like a Chaos Sorcerer. But Dragon Age is too bright for this look :(

That isn't concept art. It's promotional art for the Origins.

I generally am unimpressed by most of the looks in most games of the various hats and helmets for my characters. I usually opt to turn off the helmet so as to not look at them. That being said, occasionally one strikes my fancy.

Currently, I am trying out Diablo III and I actually like the various helmets and hats...especially for the Wizards and Demon Hunters as a comparison.

I also agree with the general consensus that the mage hats/caps from Dragon Age Origins were some of the worst in terms of appearance.

My general rule of thumb in these games is that play strategy usually trumps stats. (except in like Nightmare modes) That being my overall opinion, I tend to choose looks over stats when outfitting my characters. I just need them to look absolutely marvelous....

My only issue with the helmet is that it's length causes problems. It's not practical. If the pointy ends would be cut off (15-20 cm), the helmet wouldn't hinder the Inquisitor looking down or sideways (atm, the pointy ends touch the upper chest or shoulders when doing so).

I personaly don't like helmet . I can find them beautiful looking , awesome looking , to droole over but I wouldn't wear one no matter what .

If you think that helmet is ugly , check out the one in Swtor (Star wars knight of the old republic online) and you will see what ugly is like .And not just ugly , they have clipping issues (Heck the poor Twilek Lekku haven't been fixed , so you see their lekku go trough the Hat and it look weird like hell)

For mage although , I would favor a Hood over a hat . Or even a circle like or head band . And I think it even look good with an armor .

Good, now provide an alternative.

A dragon circlet for mages. A big hat, the wings forming the sides for rogues.

I like the design, but whenever I see, it always looks really out of place.  Like, I can't even tell why.  It just sorta looks photoshopped on.  Maybe it's just because of how polished it is.

Yea, that's my main problem with it - it looks fine, until the inquisitor wears it.

Missed Matt's comment the first time:

It's the bat-wing sides that grow the distaste. Dragon Wings are neat, but it doesn't really flow for me in terms of design for the helmet. Alternatives:
