Soooo there's a lot of discussion going on about whether males or females, heterosexual or homosexuals, get a better deal with the romance options being what they are.

However, that point is only relevant if you see your character's gender and orientation as an extension of your own gender and orientation. If you don't and are willing  to play any kind of romance and adapting your inquisitor's gender and orientation for it, the point becomes moot.

So I am curious about my fellow players: What is your gender and orientation and how do you feel about playing an inquisitor with different gender/orientation or engaging in a different kind of romance than you'd do in rl (such as m/m or f/f if you are heterosexual male)?

Please try to be civil in the discussion and don't blame others for "playing the game wrong". Everybody has their own style of how he finds enjoyment in playing a video game and in the end, none is better than the other as long as we enjoy it. Also, please don't start rehashing the discussion about what other people get and you don't -- that's what the other thread is for.  ;)

So I will start:

I am a heterosexual male.

I tend to do m/f or f/f romances most of the time. I sometimes do f/m (me playing female romancing a male), very rarely doing m/m.

In DAO, I have romanced Morrigan as male and all the others as female. I don't remember if I romanced Zevran or Leiliana as male -- could be, but I simply forgot. Romancing Alistair felt awkward, which had mostly to do with Alistair's clumsiness. I had a lot of fun with Zevran, because Zevran is awesome.

In DAII, I romanced Isabella both as male and as female, Merril only as male (I think). I didn't romance Anders or Fenris, because I didn't like their characters.

In general, I have a history of being drawn to "bad girls" in BW games -- Viconia, Jack, Morrigan and Isabela were the ones I chased most actively.

In DA:I, I am mostly curious about Sera, Cass, Dorian, and perhaps Blackwall, to a lesser degree about Iron Bull and Josephine. I am not so interested in Solas and I find absolutely nothing romance-worthy in Cullen. I still don't know if my first playthrough will be male or female.

Im a black "indifferent to sexual idenity and atrracted to everyone ,i dont know the name.) male
I often play both genders out of fun and different story dircetions. I don't see the problem with sexuality or gender idenity, you are who you are:)
My canon warden had a fling with zeveran but ultimatly romanced morrigan because thats who he was while i made my hawke the same but monogomous with merril. So yeah i guess to answer the OP's question yes i play the protags as extentions of myself(just much better looking)

I don't have a problem playing as another gender and having a different sexuality in the game, as I always roleplay as the character, not myself. I think a lot of players would get a lot more out of RPG games if they didn't feel like they had to play as their own gender and limited themselves to romances that only respond to their sexuality (especially when you plan multible playthroughs). But I know there are different types of playstyles so. I personally have multible playthroughs where I experience everything in the end for the sake of doing something different each time.

As for DAI, I wanted to play as a male my first playthrough (and would have romanced Dorian), but since Blackwall is a romance now I'll play as a female. I think the main reason I play as a male first in games is because I usually prefer and enjoy the male voice acting. But with games that the character doesn't talk like DAO, I prefer female.

I'm a pansexual woman so I usually have no problem with most romances. My added difficulty is that I really love Dwarves. I must always play a Dwarf first if the game lets me. It cuts out romances like Cullen and Solas because being a Dwarf is more important for me than who to romance.

On the actual topic, I find it hard to play a manquisitor. I'm not really sure why, I definitely tried in Origins and those runs never saw the end. More of a me thing than a game thing. Dorian is a dang sexy hunk though so I might consider rolling a guy just once for him. I do think the rest of the time it'll be a clamfest, f/f or f/m. It's difficult for me to get out of my gender comfort zone.

Male/hetero and I play male/hetero 98% of the time. The other 2% was one female Warden and Shepard respectively. Just not my style I guess. And I don't really mind the amount of LI's "I" get or don't get. I just want to play a great game.

I am a heterosexual female and I like trying different things when it comes to video game romances. I have always liked gay romances. In fact my first playthough will be with a male character to romance Dorian. I mean I like him so my character gender shouldn't matter, this is the whole point of roleplaying, being something you are actually not.

Also I really enjoyed F/F romance with Isabela in DA2, if Sera is like her I might give her a try but Isa was something else :D

It goes without saying I did all the straight romances too, but I do like to try all romances regardless of gender, orientation etc... until this moment my most favorite romance of all time is Male Shepard with Kaidan. We'll have to see if DA:I can change it.

Well, I am a bisexual female and am willing to do f/m, m/m, f/f, or m/f pairings.

In DA:O, I romanced Morrigan and Zevran, both male. I didn't romance Leliana because I just saw her as a friend. I also didn't romance Alistair because I just saw him as a bit of an older brother figure.

In DA2, I romanced Fenris, but only as a female. I didn't romance anyone else, but this probably was due to the male-elf fetish that I have.

In DA:I, I'm most interested in Solas and Josephine. The others intrigue me as well, however, those two will probably be the ones I'll romance first and foremost.

But to answer your question, I do play most of my characters as an extension of myself, so, most of my characters end up bi.

As a gay male I normally play the the gay options first, and I also enjoy playing as a female to romance the straight men.  I don't really enjoy playing lesbian characters and Straight males are usually not to my taste either.  I just can't put my mind into the role of either of those last two very well.

I have to really enjoy a female's character/storyline before I can romance them.  Unless I'm just really bored and want to see how they play out.  Even then though I feel very detached from the character I'm "roleplaying".  Thankfully there's more then enough options to keep me busy this time around.  I seriously doubt I'll ever get around to romancing Cassandra, Josephine, or Sera.

I'm gay guy in my mid-thirties.  Growing up, there was mostly dead silence in media about people like me, and I'm still not over the awesome novelty of same-sex romances in games.  When I have the option, I go m/m if I can, of f/f for a female character.  I did play all four romances in DAO, though, so only two fit the bill.  Never did an opposite-sex romance in DA2.

So of my five playthroughs, four will be Dorian, Iron Bull, Sera, and Josephine.  Since I wanted to do a different one each time, I'll have to pick one opposite-sex romance.  For a female human, that basically means Blackwall or Cullen.  Should probably be Cullen for a Templar, but Blackwall sounds more interesting and Cullen's been boring me for two games now :P

I'm a male heterosexual and I used to have a problem playing as anything other than my own gender/sexuality. But in dragon age 2 I was not a fan of isabela and merrill reminded me too much of a younger sister so I decided to play as a female hawke with anders which is the game I'm Putting into the keep, and I got over my issues playing as a female character and began to do so more. The same thing with same gender romances, as my male hawke was with fenris and I don't really have a problem roleplaying someone other than my race/gender/sexuality, so I guess I have to thank DA2 for broadening my horizons. That said I still play a straight character my first time through, and the one I plan to put into the keep is a male qunari romancing either Josie or cass so I've still got some work to do.

I will probably do many different playthroughs of DAI so I will have inquisitors of all genders and sexualities, already got a straight qunari, bisexual elf, and homosexual dwarf planned out.

EDIT: I have no idea why I quoted someone...weird...

I'm a heterosexual male and I have primarily played as heterosexual males.

I once pursued a m/m relationship with Zevran in DA:O, but I don't believe I completed that playthrough... I don't remember why, but I do recall feeling cheap because Zevran was so smug about it... he seemed like he was just using me, so I probably lost interest in the "romance."  It's also possible that I broke up with him early and completed that run with somebody else... it's hard to say.  Since then I've heard that he isn't actually like that and has another side, but I never tried again after the first time...

I had considered doing this for DA2, but disliked all of the LIs and never romanced anyone but Merrill... and that was maybe twice out of 10-15 playthroughs.  Although Fenris was one of my favorite characters, starting a romance with him seemed odd after so many friendly playthroughs, so I didn't consider that.

In DA:I, I don't expect this will change, as I have no real reason to pursue a romance with any of the characters besides Cassandra... I guess we'll see what happens.  I'm not strictly opposed to different types of romance, but it seems like the characters involved simply do not appeal to me for one reason or another...

(edit: changed some of the wording...)

In a BioWare game, once I play a protagonist as a certain gender, I have a hard time playing it as the other gender. It just seems wrong and I have a hard time getting into it and usually wind up losing interest although I have tried. And I just don't enjoy doing the ss romances. It's one thing to read ss romance in a book, and another thing to see it played out on screen. The latter is a step further than I enjoy. That's just me, and it clearly has to do with how closely I identify with the protagonist because I can do ss with Sims or watch thing like Lost Girl on TV.

I'm a female involved in a long-term heterosexual relationship.  I plan on romancing each of the companions, which will include Blackwall, Solas, Sera, and eventually Cullen with my female inquisitors, and Iron Bull, Dorian, Josephine, and eventually Cassandra with my male inquisitors.  I plan to run one inquisitor of each gender simultaneously, with different personalities for each.

I'm a pansexual woman, mid-twenties with a tendency to play elves. I do play as male characters sometimes but my first play through of a game is always female and an extension of myself personality wise. After that I roll whatever I feel like.

Out of all the LIs we have the only ones that genuinely interest me, for my first play through, as of now are Josephine and Solas, based on what has been revealed about personalities so far. I do however have a feeling I may end up being drawn to Cassandra or Dorian as we get to know them during the game.

I'm a bisexual female and I do f/f and m/f romances pretty equally. In DAI i plan on romancing Solas or Sera first, so a m/f and f/f romance. I'm going to be doing a m/m relationship for the first time with Dorian and I'm looking forward to how interesting/new it will be. In DAO I romanced Leliana, and Alistair but I prefer the Leliana romance much more. In DA2 I romanced Isabela, Merrill & Anders. I enjoyed the Isabela and Anders romances the most.

Straight male. I very much prefer straight relationships (even if the PC is the female) because I relate to them better. I don't mind going with f/f because... reasons.

And m/m is a weird one for me. I've done it, and I think it can be interesting from a plot development perspective. But in those cases I'm more of a cold external observer who does not relate to the romantic side of the relationship itself. This is because for that to happen I have to find at least one of the two characters attractive to some extent, and that doesn't happen if they're both male.

I'm a lesbian , and I usualy play f/f . Only it isn't always possible . In old Games like Baldur's Gate , I had to resort to mod to have my f/f smoochie . Kotor 1 is the 1st game where Bioware gave me my 1st f/f = Juhani   followed by years later in Mass effect Liara  and then Samara and Samantha Traynor .

I have a hard time playing anything but f/f . I did try Alistair romance and Zevran . But my problem isn't them being heterosexual...but more about their personalities .

I plan on making my 1st run with my Smexy Qunari Female Lesbo and get Sera . Then play females till I have an overdose

I'm a gay guy.  If there is an option to play as a gay male with a romance plot, then I will play that option almost exclusively.  This is primarily because there are so few outlets for this in gaming, that I just can't not pick it.  Sometimes I try, but after a few hours (usually around when the m/m option(s) show up.....), I find it unsatisfying and start over as another gay guy.

In games where there is not the option to be explicitly gay, then I don't mind selecting female characters too.  If there is a lesbian option, I'll take that.  If not, then I play my female and male characters as gay (headcanoned) and don't select the romances.  Every once in a while, I will enjoy a straight romance, but usually as a female PC and that's only if I really like the male LI.  For example, my current Sith Warrior twil'lek lady is all up in Quinn's business.  And one of my lady Shepard playthroughs romanced Kaidan in ME1 and Jacob in ME2.  Sadly, she got put the wayside in favor of my lesbian Shepard come ME3.  I couldn't bring myself to playthrough ME 3 with a female at all, let alone a straight one.

I'm a female who prefers males, but am open to giving a woman a chance (have had more than a few girl crushes). I play female characters exclusively.

Around 75-80% of my playthroughs are F/M (favorites: Garrus, Alistair, Carth, and Anders). The rest are F/F (Isabela, Leliana, and Samantha). There are some romances I prefer as M/M, but those I have only watched on YouTube (Kaidan/MShep, Fenris/MHawke).

If I ever were to roll a male PC, I would romance him with another male. There would have to be an exclusively male love interest I really liked as a character, however (will see if Dorian ends up that way).

I'm straight female. My character isn't me, it's like character that I have created. I play with different sexualities and genders, it doesn't matter to me.

However I wouldn't romance anyone I don't personally find attractive. Luckily my preferences aren't that strict so from DAI I find Dorian (most), Cullen, Leliana, Cassandra, Solas and Varric attractive. Iron Bull kinda, he's bit hypermasculine for my taste lol, but the romance could be cute. And by attractive I mean both personality and appearance, sometimes other more than another (like with Varric I don't like his looks much but his personality is attractive).

So my characters that can be whatever romance who I as person find attractive. Ah, and although I'm straight I find Leliana and Cass attractive ^^

Yet another heterosexual male here.

I can play both genders equally well, but prefer to play female protagonists (thus, my avatar). I usually switch to male for variety or if I find a gender-restricted romance option particularly compelling. I don't know the reasons for my preference but my dislike of most male archetypes in mainstream stories probably plays a part.

I don't play s/s romances well since I feel weird (f/f) or uncomfortable (m/m) doing so. I can do f/f if necessary and occasionally do so if I want to explore a particular character's romance arc. I haven't been able to do the same with m/m because thinking about the sex part is unpleasant for me.

In most stories featuring different races and species I have a preference for humans and see no point in playing anything else since the other options are usually just humans in different skins. I also dislike most types of interspecies romance since as a rule I find sexual attraction between species laughably implausible. Within the DA universe, there aren't any different species only different human(oid) races, so the same doesn't apply here, though I still think about plausibility where qunari are involved. Here, too, I prefer human characters but will also play an elf to romance Solas and a female qunari mage because it's the most notably culture-challenging type.

Heterosexual/Sapiosexual male here.

If I romance outside of my real life comfort zone, it'll be in pursuit of seeing what the romance arc adds to the characterization of the character in question. But for those characters who fall outside of my comfort zone, I'll definitely befriend them first, so that I have something to compare a romance run to, in terms of seeing what's changed and what hasn't.

I'm a straight male.  For romances, to me it's all about enhancing the current story.  If one of the "other" romances connects well with the story being told than I might make one.  Alistair for example, being able to marry him and become queen enhances the Dragon Age story, makes it worth it in my mind to make a Human Female, that I wouldn't normally make.

In Inquisition with Celene being Empress and a lesbian, perhaps there might an option for a female Inquisitor there, if so, I'll make a female Inquisitor.

It's all about making the story better.  If romances are just off in their world and don't provide anything relevant to the plot, I'll ignore them, if they do provide good content, I'll get around to them eventually.

I simply don't care. I like characters for what they are, I won't romance a random male character just because it happens to be the only option in game and I'm a straight female irl. I had no problem with Morrigan's romance in DAO at all. I liked her and wanted to see her love arc, other LIs were totally meh (Leliana) or annoying as hell (Alistair and Zevran).

DA2 well, doesnt really matter - everyone was available for everyone so I didn't care at all and played both m and f just to see what difference will it make.

In DAI I look forward only for Dorain now, because he sounds freaking amazing. He reminds me both of Anders and Morrigan but much more open and mentally stable. Also, a freaking Tevinter mage. I mean, how cool is that? And if romancing him means I'll need a male character, who cares - so be it.

Straight male here. The only romances outside my own preference I've gone for are the lesbian romances in DA 2 or Mass Effect if you count Liara as Lesbian. I usually play as a straight male though latter playthroughs might be as a female if I like the voice over and just to change things up. I'll probably do a Lesbian playthrough just to rommance Sera so I have an excuse to switch up my party. My first playthrough will have Cassandra and Varric without a doubt. Latter on I'll do a Femquisitor + Iron Bull and Sera party.

So in short, I'll play a female in a game where I can hear a sexy female voice for my character. LOL. I feel like thats shallow but it is what it is.
