I am a heterosexual male. I generally play heterosexual male and female characters, with the occasional bisexual thrown in.

I always play a fantasy extension of myself so this wouldn't really work for me.

Heterosexual male - and I'd say that over the last few years I went from playing male-only to roleplaying as both genders quite often. Started with Mass Effect  - FemShep is just so brilliantly voice-acted. In DA2 I played mostly as a female for some reason. I played one male Hawke warrior and that's it.

M/F romances are easy to roleplay, as it's my own sexuality. F/M romances were a bit trickier, it was hard to roleplay a woman romancing a man - especially because in many cases in those games it's woman who has to initiate romance, and it often felt a bit awkward to me.

What really suprised me, was how hard for me was to roleplay a F/F romance. So far I only managed to 'succeed' once - with FemShep - Liara full trilogy romance.

I though it would be easy - while playing female, I'm romancing a gender that I'm personally attracted to. But I just couldn't get into my character. The problem was, that during romance sequences, I was thinking like a man - like myself - and not like a character that I was roleplaying would. It's very hard for me to get into a mindset of a homosexual person - in F/M romance I'm just sort of reverting the roles I'm used to. In F/F I had nothing to hold on to.

I've never done M/M romance, mainly for the reasons described above - here it would be even trickier. I'm not neglecting the possibility, of trying it someday.

I tend to get into the characters that I'm roleplaying. I have to understand them, for me to have an enjoyable experience. In many regards, a predifined character (like Adam Jensen, Geralt, Shepard, Nameless One) is easier to roleplay, because a game designer provides certain characteristics, that may be used to identify with the character quicker. When creating your hero from scratch, you have to do all the work by yourself.

I can step out of my comfort zone if it's an interesting enough story I want to explore.

I hardly ever do it though, mostly because I rarely find myself compelled by such stories.

Straight male, I play as both straight males and lesbian females with my lesbian females being my head canon, the whole point to role playing games is to play someone different than your normal self. I used to always play a version of myself in both Mass Effect and Dragon Age but that got really boring after a while so I changed things up and started playing as a female and it made playing interesting again.

Hello, I'm Parkimus and I've been sober for - oops, wrong place!

Dumb joke aside, I'm a straight dude who prefers playing as straight fe/male PCs.

DA:O - I tried s/s relationships, but I felt like I was being creepy with Leliana and I just really couldn't get past Zevran's sleaziness. I was on the fence about Alistair until he refused to marry my female elf PC ("Don't be breakin' my heart!"). Morrigan be ma boo.

DA2 - I didn't try s/s relationships mostly because I thought I would feel the same way as I had in DA:O. I romanced Anders, Fenris, Isabela, and Merrill as straight PCs but their general angst deterred me. I actually enjoyed Sebastian's romance, thought he was a cool dude (I really don't know why so many people say he's preachy - he's not). I was genuinely disappointed Aveline wasn't a LI.

DA:I - Looking forward to Sandra and Blackwall the most (the latter whom I have stated multiple times I would romance as a male PC if given the opportunity, but alas). I promised myself I would at least try to do s/s romances in DA:I, so I'm a little excited for Dorian and Sera - not sure what to expect!

Straight male.

Two straight male (Cousland, Mage) romances with Leliana and Morrigan respectfully.

One Female Mage bisexual character who was with Zevran and pretty damn evil. She sold Connor for a night of demon sex, for example.

One Female Cousland bisexual who romanced Alistair but also had sex with Iona, a threesome, and Leliana before breaking it off.

She was disappointed Teagan didn't want to have a quickie.

Two male Hawkes, one Mage, one Rogue, with Merrill and Isabella plus Tallis flirting.
One female Hawke, Rogue, with Fenris

I'm a straight male who usually plays straight males, but I also like to mix it up a bit, especially with multiple playthroughs, if only to see story content I haven't seen before.

Gay dude here. No real preference for romance gender/sexuality wise. If there is a gay/bi male then I might be more likely to gravitate towards them, but usually I go for the characters I like the most.

Some characters I can never romance though, because I see them in a more platonic light. For example I can never romance Merrill because my Hawkes all see her like a little sister. Or Isabela who fills the bestie slot for most of my Hawkes. Morrigan's friendship path being way better than any romance in my opinion. etc.

I have yet to do a m/f romance in a bioware game, not because I wouldn't be comfortable with it, but more due to other circumstances. For example I can't do Miranda or Jack's romance in ME2 because Meer's voice grates on me too much in the first 2 games.

Romances I've done in Bioware games:

DAO: Female Amell w/ Alistair.

DA2: ManHawke and FemHawke w/ Fenris, FemHawke w/ Anders, FemHawke w/ Sebastian.

ME series: Femshep and Liara, Femshep and Garrus, ME1 femshep w/ Kaidan, ME3 Manshep w/ Kaidan, Femshep and Thane.

I'm a straight female and I generally play as a straight female character in games, if given the option. I'm not averse to playing a male character though and have done so before. That's the fun of roleplaying.

In DA:I I'm mostly interested in Cullen, Blackwall and Solas to romance with my female inquisitors but will likely make male inquisitors at some point to romance Dorian and Cassandra as well.

Heterosexual male. Can't remember playing a non-male non-straight character in BioWare games so far but I reckon I might just give it a shot with Inquisition. Not on the first playthrough but someday eventually. Dorian seems like a cool character and Sera looks like she's a lot of fun to have around :).

Straight male. I always play female characters if given a choice and try to find romances that feel right for the character I'm playing, but usually end up with f/f romances. Leliana in Origins, Isabela in DAII. In Inquisition, however, I'll probably pass on romances altogether.

Heterosexual Male.

Playing both female and male Characters.

Always straight Romances, regardless of the Player Character's Gender. Tend to chooses more romantic ("Betty") Options. Despises overly sexual Characters.

Won't change that.

Romances done so far:

Revan (m) - None.

Shepard (f) - Kaidan, then Garrus (both subsequent Games).

Shepard (m) - Ashley, Miranda, Ashley. (playing against my Type here).

Warden (m) - Leliana.

Warden (f) - Alistair.

Hawke (f) - Fenris.

Hawke (m) - Merrill.

Planning on Josephine with a male Inquisitor, female Inquisitor has to hope for Cullen not to be a Douche, if he happens to be one, then she'll go celibate (because she will be far too pretty for Solas, too young for Blackwall and too prudish for Iron Bull. Female Elf first World Problems).

I'm a pansexual woman, and I play both genders and any sexuality.

I haven't played DA:O yet .. (soon)

In DAII I tried pretty much everyone with each gender, I failed with Merril, I f*cked up somewhere and was too lazy to start again X) .. The one I romanced the most is Fenris.

In DA:I Solas is the one I'm the most attracted to, initially it was Cole ... but hey can't have everything .. Then Dorian, Sera and Josephine are also my cup of tea :). In the end each character has a little something that I love, so I don't know yet who I'll romance first.

Heterosexual female here.  I play male characters about 1/3 to 1/2 the time, but don't tend to pursue romances when playing them.  Also stay with heterosexual romances with my female characters.

In DA:I I'm mostly interested in Cullen as a romanceable character.  I greatly fear Blackwall is nearing his Calling, and that makes me as a player hesitant to play his romance, but I may if one of my characters really hit it off with him.  I don't currently have a female elf PC planned, but if I do eventually play one, I'll likely explore the Solas romance for the novelty.

Good luck with the Dragon Age Marathon. Make sure to play Leliana's song before Origins as characters from there will appear in Inquisition and play through all the DLCs. (you can skip Darkspawn Chronicles).

And damn. Having this many LI options fitting your sexuality must feel like christmas :P

Just posted in the "romances" thread so sorry for repeating myself =] I like dudes; I play m/m and sometimes f/f romances (I have completed a romance with Isabela with a FemHawke.)

I've attempted f/m romances but I rapidly lose interest (FemWarden x Alistair); sometimes this happens with f/f romances, too (tried it in ME and couldn't, but yet I can do it in DA2). A m/f would be far, far outside my "enjoyability" zone. There are other things I could be doing with my time than forcing myself to play through a game I'm not enjoying lol

I'm a gay guy and I enjoy M/M romances the most but I also really like doing playthroughs with F/F.

When I wasn't open about my sexuality I would only do M/F (like in Mass Effect) but now I would only ever do a M/F playthrough if I was really interested in the character you romance (like Morrigan for example), so whilst I love most of the straight characters in Inquisition from what we've seen, it's not enough for me to romance them. I dunno, M/F and F/M romances don't really excite me much. There's not as much LGBTQ representation/couples compared to straight couples in just about everything else, so when the option comes up in a game I like to take advantage of the opportunity!

So yeah my first playthrough will be Male Inquisitor and Iron Bull, and I also plan to do playthroughs for Dorian and Sera!

Edit: Not sure why but if I were to do a straight romance I would prefer to play as male and romance female. Tali was the romance for my canon Shepard and I've also done romances with Miranda and Jack, and in Dragon Age my canon Warden romanced both Morrigan and Zevran (but ended up with Zevran). I have done a FemShep/Thane playthrough before which I enjoyed, but I have no plans to do a F/M or M/F playthrough in Inquisition.

Heterosexual female. I prefer playing females though.

I'll do any kind of romance though I prefer anything over m/f. F/m is my preference.

I am positively surprised at the great variance people play outside of their rl preferences.
Summarizing, I'd say females are a bit more eager to try out different kinds of characters. Especially the gender of their LI seems to matter very little, even in case they always play a female PC.

For straight men, there is a big group which plays dominantly straight male PCs, one big group which prefers straight romances. One smaller group prefers their LI always be female, but is willing to play inquisitors of both genders. M/M relationships for men tends to be not so popular. But even there, there are some people who like to try everything.

That's a very rough estimate.

I think that's really interesting. Because if there are so many people who like to try out romances, regardless of their rl gender and orientation, then the problem of The Chart™ isn't so big. It also means that BioWare has made the right decision of giving us 8 romances with some restrictions, rather than going with 4 bisexual characters like in DAII, because that lets individual players experience more "fresh" content.

Heterosexual female. TBH I used to have a lot of trouble playing male protagonists because I struggled to see the character as anything other than an extension of myself.  Games like Planescape: Torment and the Deus Ex series helped me a lot in that regard; especially after playing PS:T, I started playing more male PCs in RPGs as their own characters.  I still have to be able to connect with the character (so I've had trouble playing the Witcher) but other than that, I'm up for trying just about anything in an RPG.

That said, the only romances I've played to completion in BioWare games have been either F/M (Valen, Sky, Garrus, Alistair, Zevran, Anders) or M/F (Bastila, Ashley, Miranda, Isabella).  I did rather enjoy watching a friend play the ManShep/Cortez relationship, and with all the character variety in DA:I, I'm going to try and complete a same-sex playthrough romance of either gender.

I don't enjoy self inserting my own qualities into my characters, so yeah. At the end of the day all I really think the whole romance feature is, is a way to feel like your character is more involved with the people around them, sometimes it further fleshes out characters you like, and to add to the story, so I just go with whatever option I think would fit best for whoever I'm playing at the time. Regardless of personal preference.
