I am a hetero male, and tend to do a straight male as my first time through a game. On replays, I will sometimes play a female or a non-straight romance, but I prefer to play male, and I prefer to play straight.
This game, I am only looking forward to replay romances as neither of the straight options interest me at all-- I don't even want Cassandra in my party.
I'm a gay male, and my preference is for playing that in my games, especially considering how rare it is for me to ever see a gay couple as the heroic main couple. I've played most of the romances in the game, though, just for experimentation's sake, just to see what they're like. But when it comes to what I would pick as a 'canon' path if I had to limit myself to just one Warden/Hawke, they'd be gay men. It just may not seem like it with Origins, because Zevran's initial flirtations are the kind of thing that push me away, so I headcanon my Warden falling for Alistair regardless of gameplay. But my Hawkes seem to inevitably end up with Fenris.
It's very interesting, but while I have no problems playing a female Jedi Exile in KOTOR, I couldn't really bring myself to finish my female Warden past unlocking the Alistair achievement (it might have something to do with going and solving the problems of the various factions in DAO is something of a struggle for me, so disconnection from the storyline AND the character I'm playing made it hard to want to continue with her), while I really did not care for female Hawke's VA, so I have yet to play a full Dragon Age game with a female protagonist. Given I have an interest in three of the four female-exclusive romances, I'm hoping that that's going to change in Inquisition, but those are still harder playthroughs to do for me, given that playing a character of a different gender than my own makes the game less engaging for me. I like to play RPGs through the lens of 'this is what I'd do, who I'd be, how I'd react in this situation,' and playing a female character is an automatic disconnect from that idea. I have a visual and audible difference from who I am and who my character is literally staring me in the face the whole time.
I am a straight female. I tend to play straight characters in my 1st, "cannon" playthroughs - but if none of the male options are appealing to me, I will romance a female character - but I'd be slightly disappointed.
My later playthroughs tend to be mostly female as well - I only play as a male character to vary things up later on. Usually in later playthroughs, I romance whoever is more suited for my character's archetype (evil, noble, promiscuous, etc).
While a lot of my playthroughs are bisexual during the course of the game, they typically end up with their final romance being of the opposite gender. Currently I'm playing DA2 as a gay male, which is the first time I've ever limited a character to being homosexual. I've never had any interest in doing a gay female playthrough - but Sera seems really cool so I may do one just for her.
I'm a gay male too and I do prefer to play male characters. I usually go for the m/m option first if there is one now that those are available to us (unless the character doesn't seem interesting enough, although it hasn't happened yet with Bioware games) but I don't necessarily make it a rule either. If I'm more inspired to romance a female character or if I want to play a female character, I just go for it (for example, my canon Warden is a female mage even though I've played DA:O many times with many different races/genders. I just think that playthrough's the best).. That being said, maybe playing as a gay male character is just easier to relate to, I guess. But I enjoy playing with characters of all races/genders/sexual preferences without it being it weird or even unsettling. For example, I found that the love story between my Human Noble male Warden and Leliana was the cutest thing ever, just like I think two of my heterosexual friends being happy and in love is cute. It's kind of hard to explain. XD
I'm a straight male, so I always prefer to play an Andrastian, straight male warrior for my canon play-through. ![]()
To be honest, i don't like romancing out of my RL preference. I tried romancing Alistair in Origins with my female elven mage. Just couldn't do it. ![]()
I can go girl/girl though.

Male and Female.
It's the classic alignment split with each sex represented in each class. Red text signifies I'm gonna have to mod said save game for romance. And of course, my Warden and Hawkes alignment doesn't necessarily match up to each other or the Inquisitors making things quite exciting.
Black heterosexual male.
I have romanced every character in both Dragon Age games. I will romance all 8 character in the 3rd game.
Straight girl. Most of the time I'll play a female who bangs a dude, and the others I'll usually do m/m. Very rarely will I do m/f and I've never done f/f. I would have no problem playing m/f (did it for Jack from ME2) and f/f if it was necessary. It's not something I'd go out of my way for tho.
Straight male here. I mostly play the straight romances in these kinds of games. All of my male characters romance females (I've never pursued a gay male romance)
Though most of my female characters are bi. I'll pursue either male or female romances if playing a female protagonist. Even so, I mostly keep my female protagonists straight.
Just my preference. Almost always pursue straight romances in my playthroughs. Only gay romance I ever pursued was Female Hawke and Merrill.
I prefer to romance male and female characters as a female character, probably since I'm a bi woman myself. However, I do try m/m and m/f (where you're the male) at least once per LI. In DA, anyway.
In fact, I was surprised that one of my favourite Wardens was a male Cousland warrior who romanced Zevran. That's definitely outside my usual play style. I also did a run with Fenris and sarcastic male Hawke, and that was fun. Sarcastic male Hawke is quite different to female, and I do like his voice.
I can happily play a man, but only if I can make him attractive and enjoy his voice, which is probably why I never took to male 'Mr Potato Head' Shepard.
I'm a lesbian trapped inside a man's body.
M/F, F/F, and F/M.
I foresee myself beating Inquisition a dozen times, each with a different race/gender/class.
I am an asexual heteroromantic woman.
I play mostly as a male, and then romance the person I find most appealing for my protagonist independent of sex: m/f, m/m.
Whenever I play as a female, I roleplay myself. I then usually play only the romances I could have in a real life too, so f/m.
Male straight - I always play: Male characters. Human warrior first, then Elven Rogue, Then the Dwarven Warrior before I try the Elven Female Mage.
In DAO - I romanced Leliana with a Human warrior, Morrigan with a Rogue Dalish, My Dwarf didn't romance anyone.
(Elven Female mage, Human Female Rogue, Dwarven Female Rogue - romanced Alistair. One became his mistress, the other one a queen and the last one wandered with him as grey wardens.)
Then I did played a Human Male Mage who romanced Zevran which I enjoy totally. Zevran did tried flirt with the former male warden.. I couldn't resist with this one.
Lastly my Female city elf warrior romanced Leliana. She was an evil warden.
In DA2 - As always Male Hawke warrior - LI Merrill. Female Hawke Mage - LI Fenris. Male Rogue - LI Isabela. Female Rogue - LI Merrill... Then Female Warrior - LI Fenris and lastly Male Mage - LI Anders.
Planned DAI - So in Order like I always do.
- Male Human Warrior - LI Cassandra - With eyes on Vivienne... ![]()
- Female Elven Mage - Not sure. LI Solas maybe...
- Male Elf Rogue - LI Josephine
- Dwarf Male Warrior - I have no other options. I thought I had Vivienne but I will have to make my Dwarf gay together with LI Dorian.
In Dragon age or any other games..... I feel Male Dwarfs don't romance other race basically to have like a long-termed relationship..............So I can either make him gay just for a fling or no romance at all.
I have other 7 planned DAI characters - 11 in total. Remaining race for each class......Just figuring out in what order. I will try the Qunari male warrior first who will romance......Cassandra or Ironbull. ![]()
I am a straight male and I've no qualms playing either race or romancing anyone. I started origins as a male warrior and romanced Morrigan while also having sexy time with Leliana and Zevran. I subsequently romanced Alistair, Leliana and Zevran on later playthroughs. Never completed a playthrough of DAII as a male 'coz I found it too boring ( though it's just my opinion ). Romanced both Isabela, Merrill and Fenris as female on different playthroughs. Didn't bother with Anders and Sebastian. In DAI will start as female warrior and romance Sera. Will romance Cassandra, Josephine and Iron Bull later.
Straight female. I usually prefer to play female characters but I will play a male one once in a blue moon and that male character is usually gay. I play f/m, m/m, and sometimes m/f to see what happens in that romance (like Morrigan's). I don't play f/f relationships because I'm not interested in women. If I'm going to enjoy a romance I play, I want to be able to feel an attraction to one of the characters involved in that romance or else there's no immersion factor for me.
Edit:
My fav romances are: Zevran, Alistair, and Fenris from DA. Garrus and Thane from ME.
I'm planning on romancing: Iron Bull, Dorian, and Solas.
Straight female completionist here. My first playthrough of any RPG where I have the choice is always my "Mary-Sue self-insert" playthrough where all game choices (including romance) are made intuitively. Then comes the metagaming!
I'm thinking Mary-Sue Trevelyan (mage human) will go Sera, Bull, Cullen or Blackwall (haven't seen enough of Scribbles to consider her yet, and am thinking she might be more of a ladybro).
Dalish warrior for Solas. Cadash rogue, I think for Bull (I want Mr. Epler to feel his hard work wasn't wasted lol)
Not sure who I'd roll to romance Dorian, but there WILL be a Dorian romance.
I'm a straight female, I do honestly prefer playing as a female and romancing males, although I also will play as a male and romance a female. I'm not opposed to doing same sex romances, but there hasn't been much of a reason to so far since most romance options have been either bi or straight. There were options in ME of course, but they never really interested me because the characters were never something I was drawn to.
NOW we have DAI though and barring the characters completely taking me by surprise, I will definitely be doing a romance with Sera and Dorian. Sera just seems like fun and Dorians character and potential romance arc fascinates me, so I'll be doing a game with them, probably before I play as a male to romance the gals too.
First ever post on a site like this so forgive any mistakes would ya.
Straight male always do m/f's. I like/want to play as a male. Playing as a female is just something I can never get into.(only exception maybe being Lara Croft) And while I think its good that more and more games offer the choice to be ether male or female as lead I'll always pick male. That's just who I am. So the fact I only really get a shot with two of the cast pretty much sucks to me. Especially when they are not my top 4 picks. (Leliana, Sera, Morrigan*love Claudia Black's voice/and as actor*,and Vivienne) I understand that some of them can't be options so I'll deal with my disappointment. But then Sera isn't cause I want to be a male?
It's impossible to please everyone. We all got different backgrounds, views, religions, etc. So Why limit the choices? In real life you can't change people's orientation but this isn't real life. So why can't everyone be an option no matter what you pick? I'm never going to play the m/m. But putting my views/faith aside I get that plenty of people would want to.(Zevran was constantly cracking me up in DAO) But pleasing as many people as possible and make them all both doesn't feel like to much to ask. They want you to play "your way" but then limit relationships? That bugs me.
But after saying that I truly do applaud them for having relationships.(DA Mass Effect) I've read tons of hate about it and it pisses me off. Games to me have always been like a playable movie. But with games I get to pick the path it goes which makes it amazing. I rarely if ever have heard someone complain about romance in movies so why do games have to be different. Maybe its just me but I've always thought of love as the driving force behind humans. So to me its only natural games should have it as well. It's not perfect and some of the "special scene's" are awaked as all get up. But I will continue to support games that push and explore what I consider the driving force of humanity.(after food, shelter, etc.) So to finish soap box moment thanks for making games like this Bioware. Great story, fun gameplay, and relationships that make you care.
In DA2 we could have "everyone for everyone". And it was crap, I have to say. Of course partly because they didn't think it through and all romances outside of hetero scenario (except for Isabela, maybe) seemed unrealistic and tense even. I can't really ignore the fact that all of the companions if not romanced will go for m/f or that your gender affects the dialogues even so slightly... So yes, it's better to have gay, bi and straight characters who are well-written rather than try to please everyone by making all 8 LIs "bi".
