Asexual panromantic here. My choices all come down to what feels right for both my character and the other character in question.

Played as a female character before. Romanced Leliana and Merrill. Tried playing as a male character in both games, but didn't appeal as much.

Plans for Inquisition:

- 1st playthrough. Play as a male Qunari mage (if I can find an appearance I like & if the voice fits) & romance Cassandra.

- 2nd playthrough. Play as a female Elven or Human rogue & romance Sera or Josephine.

I am a (mostly) straight woman and I like playing all kinds of characters. I prefer to play as female since I don't get to do so very often in video games. My default is f/m, but I also like f/f and m/m. I don't have a problem playing m/f (I did have a harem in Persona 3 and 4 and that was fun), but if there are options I usually reserve m/f for when I really want to see a female character's romance arc and they aren't available to romance as a female (like Cassandra.) I feel so spoiled in Inquisition since all the love interests are so lovely. I hope to do all of the romance arcs at some point if my attention span allows it. My definite plans are to go for Solas first, then Iron Bull as a male, followed by Cullen who I've liked since Origins, then Sera.

Straight male sprinkled with a fine and subtle powder of sapio and demisexuality.

I tend to role-play based on my moral code and beliefs and I have a hard time playing as the opposite gender if given the option between the two sexes. Also, I only romance females of any sexual orientation that includes my gender, be them straight, bi or any other orientation that permits the formation of a emotional bond, just like in RL.I'm a sucker when it comes to cuddling.

I can't play as the opposite gender or romance my gender because I simply can't form a connection with the character and it feels uncomfortable.

Strange enough, if I am to play games where there's only one protagonist that's female or play a class that is restricted only to the opposite gender then I don't have this problem.

Also, if I am to play and RPG with a friend besides me as a second voice I think I could play any gender and orientation combo.

I started playing RPGs at age 10 and there just were not that many games that offered options as to what sex preference you wanted and frankly, back then I did not think about it or even really care. Now I will seldom purchase a RPG unless I can play as a female. Being able to romance NPCs is also rather new to RPGs and I have thus far stayed in line with my life preferences. I think this is because of the evolution time line of RPGs, but early on there were no gay preferences and you had to settle.

Over the years I have developed several alter ego players; the fully rounded Warrior, the mischievous Rogue, the kill all destroy all Witch or Sorceress (Trist, and you really do not want to **** with her. She cheats too.), all with their own back stories. Some are sexual charged beasts, and some are naive as Merrill, and some are psychotic bitches.

I am married with children and my wife and I have a well rounded relationship, so I guess that I don’t romance outside my personal RL preference / comfort zone.

For DAI, I am hoping for a tool. In DAO I was able to bring by wife with me on most of my wandering through Fereldon.

I'm a bisexual female. With that said, I tend more towards men, simply because I have no idea how to deal with other women. But in gaming, I tend to try out the lesbian romances more. For example, Liara is my favorite ME romance hands down.

I always play female characters when I have the opportunity. It helps me connect to the character better. I feel weird playing males, though I might eventually for Inquisition. Or I might just watch my fiancee play it when he gets there, just to see Cass's romance.

In DA:O, I have a hard time not romancing Alistair or Zevran. I'm actually playing through Origins again, with a Dalish rogue romancing Zev and Leliana. I plan to do an offshoot of the character with both of them.

I do enjoy Leliana's romance so far. I've been avoiding it until recently because I couldn't decide on a character to pair with her. In my head, certain pairings just make sense. Like FemCousland ending up with Alistair, Amell with Alistair, Surana with Zev, and City elf with either of them. I was kind of leary about Leli also, because I had heard of the dreaded elf dialogue. But honestly, it wasn't that bad, nor was it unexpected. Leliana's from a massively different culture than either the city elf or Mahariel.

In DA2, I always end up with Fenris. I romanced Anders once, and it was sweet and romantic. But I'm not a fan of how he spirals out of control, even if it does make sense.

But basically, I make Fenris laugh, and he makes puppy eyes at me, and I'm a goner.

I'm kind of picky about what characters I'm attracted to, and often the female characters are not it. Izzy is fun as a friend, but I still haven't gotten around to romancing her or Merill. And Merill is like watching a car crash. I just want to hold her, and tell her it'll be alright. I also want to shake her.

Gay dude.

I will always go for the gay romance if they are good (They weren't in DAO or DA2. They were in Mass Effect 3)

As a woman I'll romance whoever the hot straight guy is (Alistair, Garrus)

And as a man without the gay option I won't romance anyone.

Bi (mostly) woman (mostly).  I have trouble rolling characters that aren't extensions of myself, right down to hair and eye colour.  I wish I could roleplay a bit more but I'm not sure how to do that without artificially putting a lot of emotional distance between me and the character.  And yes, I do feel like I'm missing out by not being able to do that.

With regards romance, if it's available I'll almost always go for the f/f romance first, second and possibly third time.  I have romanced Alistair, Fenris and Anders.  I even managed Kaidan once, then reloaded an earlier save and went back to Traynor for the nth time.

Homoromantic demisexual (lesbian)- I like to play my sexuality most of all, obviously, especially since there are so few respectful options. I have played a guy romancing a woman, but that is my last play through, and usually an evil one because i have to play a game over and over to finally be able to be Evil, but I like seeing that content. I just played Iago Amell who romanced Morrigan and was possessed by a Fade Demon because he failed his test and was pretty dumb, that was the first time I romanced her after countless playthroughs. But that is my just see content one.

I hardly ever play women who romance men, usually I just don't find the mean appealing enough for the go. I mean I find Straight female options fairly dull to begin with, but that is more my orientation than the characters. Garrus was pretty cool, but my girlfriend is bisexual so I enjoyed seeing her romance him, and that was more than enough for me. Maybe she will do it again if one of the guys strikes us again. (Of course as soon as we saw Nihlus we both wanted to romance a Turian so it was a no brainer in 2)

Weirdly enough I have no trouble playing men romancing men. I guess because it is stepping out of both my comfort and discomfort zone. No negative feelings attached to it, so it is just a good love story which I don't have to place myself into.

I'm a straight female, and my first playthrough is generally a neutral "self insert" type game, so a female diplomatic character, usually a rogue, that will romance a male character.  After that, anything goes.  For instance, my second Hawke, got with Isabela, who broke her heart, so she turned to Fenris, who also broke her heart, so she turned to Anders.... She was kind of self destructive.  I've romanced Zevran as a male and female.  I've done the Kaidan romance as a male and female and Shepard.

Of course, I'm kind of a prude, so hey free love!  But super cereal no holding hands in public.  Every time the sex scene comes on escape escape escape!  I like the feels man.  I could be strange though.

My plans for Dragon Age Inquisition are to romance everyone at least one time, with varying personalities and specs/races so I can see all the different minute little differences in the overall story and experience all the romance and friendship arcs.  (I am aware this may take until I die to do, and I am ok with that).

I'd rather stay out of the whole self-insert thing, but I always gravitate towards male homosexual protagonists if given the option. Where else would I get that kind of option in video games save for a select few? I could play a straight male in a lot of other games. But with BioWare, I'm able to see the story play out in a way that I could form an even stronger emotional connection through relatability, which is really rare. If given the option to play the romance aspect of the game as how I see fit, I'd always take it.

I'm an agender person who tends to be attracted to male-presenting folks but I'm a little ashamed to say that I'm really bad at self-insertion, at least for the first few playthroughs. So my personality definitely takes over the character I'm playing but also my race and body choices (as well as my compaion choices) are usually tied to who I find attractive or interesting personally.

So I was hoping Blackwall and Varric would be romanceable since they are both in my wheelhouse and now that we know the answers to that (I shouldn't spoil more than that), I am likely going to be playing a character who can romance Blackwall first (or second).

The other factor for me in DA is that I absoluely love the Dwarves. And I don't mean that I approve of the awful parts of their culture but I just think it's so interesting and both Dwarven options are definitely my favorite of the origins in DAO. So I play male Dwarves I find attractive, for the most part.

All that said, once I satisfy my own intense need for escapism, one of my favorite things in a Bioware game is play through as every other gender/sexuality permutation available and see how all of the characters differ in their relationships. With how intricate and dynamic these relationships (romantic or otherwise) seem to be built, I can already foresee dozens and dozens of Inquisistors and that doens't even factor in any questline or faction options I might miss the first few times!

But first, we climb the wall!

I'm a 23 year old straight female offline.

Depending on the replay value  I will play as many different characters as possible, but I always start in the same fashion.

I will start as a female with a predetermined personality and be as heroic as possible. I'll play a sappy romance, but it will change based on who my character is most drawn to.

Then I'll play a male hero and once again get my love interest to fall head over heels for me.

Then subsequently I'll degrade my playthroughs into chaos, and depending on whether or not the romances still interest me, my character and their LI will watch the world burn.

I play all my characters as an extension of myself, so when it comes down to it, I'm not interested.

It's weird how the only people who seem to play the m/f romances are straight men.

Everyone else seems to play everything BUT m/f.

I'm a gay guy and I actually like doing m/f better than f/m. For some reason it feels a little bit funny to romance a man as a woman... Still do all possibilities now and them but for me it's m/m>f/f>m/f>f/m

I'm not a straight man but I always play m/f romances if I have such an option. It's fun and it gives you opportunity to see the world (and relationship) from the different angle, so to speak.

I am a M/F romances. Tried twice F/M (ME2 and SWTOR) but it just doesn't fit me, have difficulties roleplaying and getting into the experience.

Usually I pick the romances that don't exist (Tali in ME and now Vivienne in DAI) just plain bad luck I'd say.

Straight-shooting, free-wheeling dude here. I don't generally leave my comfort zone, though I do enjoy a strong female protagonist elsewhere in video games.

Straight female here.  I usually play straight females, but Dorian has me thinking about a male play through.  I find the notion of Dorian intriguing and I am a bit curious about the whole male on male social interaction thing.  Don't need anything explicit though.  Torchwood has blinded me for life to that.   I'll have to wait and see how my first play through goes before I make the plunge.

Straight female here, while most my romances in games does end up being f/m, I also like f/f (Liara and Leliana being choices, difference being that romance with latter ended when she didn't want to share my Warden with Alistair and thus is not yet final romance in my playthroughs. Currently have one Hawke romancing Isabela and plan to have Merrill/another Leliana romance too.)

What I find harder to play is male PC. While my characters are their own personalities, I just feel more confortable using my own gender. However I still plan to play one day M!Amell romancing Morrigan, few male Hawkes for sake of variety (Except for Merrill, no idea who they go for yet) and make two male Inquisitors in order to romance Dorian & Cassandra. And one male Cadash for Josephine since for unknown reasons I find it cute pairing.

So m/f and m/m playthroughs are in "I'll play them in future"-box.

IRL- Gay male

I have no problem creating Inquisitors of varying sexualities (and appearances, I NEVER make my characters look like me).

Will have het males for Josephine (male human) and Cass (likely male dwarf)

Will have het females for Cullen (female elf), Solas (female elf obviously), Blackwall (fem qunari or human)

Will have s/s female for Sera (female dwarf)

Will have s/s males for Dorian (male human or elf) and Iron Bull (male qunari or elf)

Obviously looking forward to Dorian and Iron Bull the most but I have a vested interest in Sera, Josephine and Solas. Cullen only because I ship female elf x Cullen (I like male human/female elf romances, original I know). Not so interested in Blackwall or Cass (more like my later characters/down the road. Would've shipped FemQuizzie x Cass but it is not to be).

In previous romances I generally ship:

Leliana x Fem!Warden (Leliana comes off more as lesbian than bi to me, or strongly preferring women, so it feels more natural to see her romance a Fem Warden)

Isabela x M!Hawke (preference really)

Fenris x M!Hawke (just my preference, being Fenris is my favorite LI)

Anders x Either Way (personally, if they hadn't changed his character in DA2 it would be F!Hawke, but he was rewritten to be so gender neutral, almost like a different character, so a M!Hawke romancing Anders doesn't seem off to me)

Merrill x M! Hawke (though I can see Merill romancing a F!Hawke, I haven't done a F!Hawke x Merrill pairing just yet)

Liara x Fem!Shep

Kaidan x Fem!Shep (retconned a little too late for believability otherwise, especially since my Canon Shep romanced him in the first game)

Ashley x VirmireNuke (couldn't resist...sorry)

Amazing how many people participated. Thanks a lot to everybody!

Just starting to do some statistics here, counting everyone that was reasonable easy to identify on the gender (male/female) and orientation (heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual with pansexual lumped together with bisexual).

I could identify 147 people for the stats. Don't take slight if the presentation or wording isn't entirely accurate, I did my best to get a reasonable statistic, without any bias here.

  • heterosexual male: 49 (33,33%)
  • heterosexual female: 46  (31,29%)
  • bisexual male: 5 (3,40%)
  • bisexual female: 20 (13,61%)
  • homosexual male: 14 (9,52%)
  • homosexual female: 13 (8,84%)

Total 147

So that means at least for the forumites:

  • While straight males are the single biggest group, their lead is only very slim. In total, only every third person who was identifiable in this thread is a straight male.
  • LBQT are roughly one third and are far, far, far above the american national average (please note that transgender forumites were assigned to the group of their self-identified gender)
  • In total, females are slightly stronger represented here than males (53% vs. 47%).

If I may make a statement here: Everybody is of course welcome in this game.

However, anyone who makes a statement such as "straight male gamers are the demographic BioWare must cater to, because they are the only ones who really play RPGs, while girls only play casual games" should be laughed at, because this is yet another (in no way representative!) indication that 'tis not so.

Pretty much this.
